it takes sweat and effort to climb oneself all the way up to goodness. it only takes gravity to fall back into the hole. and sometimes, while one is climbing, the darkness below sings a sweet siren song that makes the light above seem so bitter...

Definitely showing this to my class of high schoolers this year when we talk about the Siren Book. Despite it's ubiquity in pop-culture, it's so often overlooked and difficult to analyze. What did the sirens offer him that was so tantalizing? Why did Odysseus need to test himself against their song? They baited him with knowledge of the world, and to sing of his victories at Troy so he could rest on his laurels and feel satisfied. They tried to coax his pride, and offered him divine knowledge of the self. They gave him the chance to just quit, and not endure anymore hardship, and he didn't take it. He reaffirms that his love for his country and his family is greater than the tragedy he's been through, that it's greater than his ego, and it's really beautiful for that reason. And the thing is that just by listening, Odysseus gets his answer; he does get divine knowledge of the self from them, and knows for sure what kind of man he is when he doesn't turn back to them and keeps pressing forward instead. Then when he's with Calypso after, that's why he can't truly be happy with her; he tells her she's beautiful, but immortal, and he longs for mortal things. His things. A wife and a son that he can hold with his hands and grow old with. Someone to share whatever of his life he has left, someone who can understand him in a way that gods can't. The love of a mortal woman, and a mortal son is all that he desires. The proud Odysseus finally understands that he's just a man thanks to the sirens, and he's ultimately happier for it. ... And then of course, the son he had with Circie comes to kill his father in the sequel because we can't have nice things in the Epic Cycle lol :')

@@hollowman9410 Yep! The Epic Cycle is a series of plays and other works written about the Trojan War, and the heroes from it. The Telegony is a lost epic about Odysseus' son that he had with Circie (whom he doesn't know, of course). Can't read it anymore, but we know the general plot of it from reviews and snit bits written down by other writers in the ancient world. I'm also fond of Oresteia, where Clytemnestra kills her husband Agamemnon on his return from the Trojan War as revenge for the death of her daughter Iphegenia. There's also one with Helen and Menelaus where they go on a road trip getting back to Sparta and rekindle their love on the way!

You animated AND made the song for this?? I was stunned before at how haunting and dark this is, yet poetic. It's insane how the movements added their own horror--like how eagerly and naturally the lotus eaters popped the flowers into their mouth, how Odysseus's eyes were so faded when he returned home, like he was half-dead...just incredible.

For the record the young man stabbing Odysseus in the vision was Telegonus. He was the son Odysseus had with Circe. He never knew Odysseus growing up and went looking for him as an adult. He ended up arriving in Ithaca the homeland of Odysseus but didn’t realize where he was and so started stealing cattle. Odysseus came out to confront him and Telegonus not realizing who he was stabbed Odysseus with a poisonous spear made out of the tail of a stingray which killed him. Telegonus then went on to mourn Odysseus once he realized who he was and later married Penelope while Odysseus’ other son Telemachus went and married Circe.

Yup. It happens. It's in a sorta unofficial sequel called the "Telegony". However, most scholars don't consider it as canon since it's not made by the original author ( Homer). It was written by Eugammon of Cyrene, hundred of years after the Odyssey. So in most part, it's an edgy fanfiction.

In this world, the trick is written into the rules." Also, probably you know that by now, but what you realized from the song is actually the canon interpretation of the Siren's promises : flattery to his sense of greatness and glory, but most importantly, knowledge of the past, present and future: "Come this way, famed Odysseus, great glory of the Achaeans, / Anchor your ship so that our voice may reach your ears. / No sailor yet has passed us by in his black-hulled craft, / without delighting in the honey-sweet sound from our lips: / nay, he takes joy in it, and leaves us wiser than before. / For we know all that the Greeks and Trojans suffered in wide Troy / by the gods' decree, and we know whatever happens upon this fertile earth."

As an ethnic Peloponnesian Greek, it is always so very rewarding to see people bring so much artistic beauty to Greek culture, stories, and language. My grandparents arrived here in the States in the early 1900s, and so I was born here and have never set foot upon Greek land in my life. The only connection I have with Greece has always been through the Internet, through literature, and my own blood. I wish with all my heart that I can go there someday, see the town of Spartiá where my great-grandmother was raised, feel the same grass beneath my feet that she walked on and experience the same spell Greece seems to cast on her people that draws them to construct such timeless pieces of art. This is a very special piece of art. You not only have such a strong and interesting creative vision, but the skill and dedication to see it through. My knowledge of Greek literature is unfortunately very rusty now, but in high school I loved tales of Greek mythology, and I recognized most of the story beats present here from the Odyssey. The slaughter of the sacred cattle of Helios, Scylla taking his men, Polyphemus, the lotus eaters, Circe, Odysseus taking his bow to the suitors, all that good stuff. I also like how accurate everything is, it really heightens how uncanny creatures like Scylla and the sirens are. really inspired designs. I especially love Odysseus' design, very fitting for the time, as well as the upside-down eyelids, makes the sirens even more unsettling. This cinematography is nothing short of inspired, and you deliberately made such difficult choices of camera work to capture in animation, and that ambition shows in every frame. The constellations telling a story, all the flashbacks/forwards, beautiful stuff. Everything perfectly accompanies Odysseus' mounting despair to the music. Speaking of which... Not only is the animation truly wonderful, but YOU ALSO WROTE AND COMPOSED THE SONG- _THAT'S SO COOL._ The harmonies and vocal work add so much to the haunting effect of what the sirens are telling Odysseus, this is how a siren's song should sound and make someone feel. That nylon guitar at the begging feels like a great way to evoke an ancient lyre or some other ancient stringed instrument. I've only just begun dipping my toes into making music, and stuff like this makes me feel like I can actually attain that goal someday. Literally every time I've thought of this video I want to go back to it, and as I've had this video up typing this comment I can't help but go back through and play the whole thing, I find something new to appreciate each time I see it. Very fitting that this video has that effect on me. Your work inspires me, and I hope you can always find inspiration yourself.

To those who wanted to know the Greek words in the beginning, here’s the non-reliable translation of it: Οδυσσέας, ο τεχναστης ακόμα δεν το έχει καταλάβει. Στο συμπαν, ο τέχνασμα είναι γραμμένο οτους κανόνες Odysseus, the technician still hasn't figured it out. In the universe, the trick is written in the rules Also i want to say i love this so much, after reading the Odyssey it seemed like such a quick skim when Odysseus was in the sea with the sirens and the idea of what the sirens really tempted him with doesn’t really get to you. But that single set of lines are somehow the most powerful definition of Odysseus’ indomitable nostos and this video is a masterful representation of what great enduring Odysseus saw. I’m so glad you made this masterful piece of art and story which opened my eyes to something i disregarded in my deep readings! Also idk if you made created that Greek lyrics but it’s on par with Homer with such hidden meaning and beauty that articulates itself to the story itself, i am super impressed!

Sagpi, I really hope you take pride when I say this brought me to tears. I am in no way religious, other than nature and Earth, but I was explained what the story was, and you portrayed it beautifully!

Ty for noticing my comment 💓 yesterday the 8th was my birthday, and I thought it'd be nice to show my partner this beautiful animation. I'd love to see your style and work with some kind of Aries concept, that'd be just nuts!
