What happened to these Chinese companies recently...Vazen, Z Cam, Kinefinity and now Sirui, a company used to make tripod...is now making affordable and decent anamorphic lenses...what a time to be alive.

I really like the build quality of the lens. The nice and slick synchro focus mechanism is elegant and feels premium. However there are several things that puzzles me. - The anamorphic ratio for one. I mean it's the elephant in the room. 1.33 is barely anamorphic. It really doesn't change much the FOV. It's not vintage in any way. - The lens is very sharp ! But sharp doesn't feel very organic. One of the main reason to shoot anamorphic nowadays is the ways these old lenses "break" the digital look of modern sensors. This lens on the other hand is tack sharp and a bit sterile wide open. - The flares are a bit on the saturated side. I like the artefacts around highlights though. But the blue is really SLR magic-esque. As a first product, it really is a great first step, that's why I understand your enthusiasm Tito. But as of now, the image this lens produces currently feels like a spherical lens with a flare filter. I sincerly hope Sirui will make a X2 anamorphic.
thinking the same. 2x is so much better. But with that comparison at 11:15 i am also wondering how that 2x vs. 1,33x difference did happen and the 1,33 Siriu is probably enough and similar or even better than my current taking lens + 2x adapter....
I'm an anamorphic newbie, so please be patient with this probably stupid question: Why would you buy this lens if you already have a full frame 50mm, except for the cool flare it does with lighting? Full frame gives you *more* range... so it seems like you're really paying $700 just for the flares. I'm probably missing something really obvious, and maybe that $700 is worth the flare effect, but I'm still learning about the value of these lenses.
I think the change to 2.4:1 was because of a veru slight change - reduction in height - of the projector aperture to avoid visible splices. This was a concern due to changes to the way film prints were manufactured on high speed printers which could make splices visible using the older 2.35:1 CinemaScope projector aperture. Reducing the projector aperture height ensured splices wouldn't be seen as they would be masked in the projector. I think you are thinking of the change from 2.55:1 to 2.35:1 that was caused by the addition of optical soundtracks from 1956 on. Interestingly, the first CinemaScope film The Robe actually used the entire silent aperture and for the premiere, the soundtrack was on a separate piece of mag film, so the aspect ratio was close to 2.66:1, though of course it was projected on a slightly curved screen. It's crazy to think that the development of CinemaScope occurred at such speed that 20th Century Fox hadn't finalised how the sound would be configured on the print when The Robe was released in September 1953. I think 16:9 with 1.5x anamorphic squeeze = ~2.66:1 would be very old school CinemaScope as used for the very first CinemaScope film. Even just before the digital projection revolution, Dolby Digital and DTS 35mm prints still included a Dolby SR encoded optical track as a back up in case the digital sound decoding stopped working.
I'm surprised as how well the lens works on full frame! You could get at least 20% more of usable image compared to APS-C if you crop with care. Would be interesting to know what focal length that would be when comparing it to a spherical lens, as you did in this video. Great review!
Great job Sirui!! I personally don’t care much for not having it full frame even though I use Sony A7 III. What a great relief to have single focus! And look at the price, this is a great initiative. I hope this is just a beginning and waiting for more focal lengths. Nicely explained Titto as always. I am just waiting for mine hopefully I should get it in Feb. Cheers you all anamorphic shooters!!
I really wanted t get on it but no canon mirrorless mount was the end of that especially as you said adaptor would be no good a shame maybe down the road they might cater to the canon mirrorless side m series or r series would they be ok for the distance to sensor ?
By the way the linked article is great! Such a vivid image, remembering all these stages I went through the years striving to achieve the cinematic look... from the 24 fps miniDV to Cinestyle profiles, Magic Lantern and vintage lenses :) As a director, I think "cinematic" does not necessarily mean a widescreen image or shallow depth of field; most important, it involves some visual poetry, when the onscreen image sometimes becomes more abstract to convey feelings and atmosphere rather than a mirror image of reality.
The GH5 with the video upgrade and the GH5s by default, have a 1.33 desqueeze feature build in. I’m not getting very exited about it until there wide options since I get great an easy results with the SLR magic 1.33 50 and my Veydras on more focal lengths. 50mm is just too tight for most of what I do, except for when I do close ups.

I just bought a projection lens and helios for anamorfake for a personal project, but had I done a little more research on this lens.... dang.I guess I have to live with a super long lens, 15 ft min focus distance, and double focus for the moment... I'm totally with you on "cinematic" as well.

ok, i will be the bitch here: my fave thing about anamorphic is the oval, waterfall-y bokeh. Is there a way we can enhance that in this lens? vid atlantic fronts maybe? apart from that, its perfect :D
I feel like if you put it on full frame, adjust the vignetting in post a bit and crop just to the edge of the vignetting you get much wider focal length, not worth going super 35/aps c.
What's wrong with shooting an entire feature in FF and just leaving the vignette on there for effect? Just have to make sure shadows render consistently, but isn't that the job of the colourist anyway? I wonder if this can be adapted to the L-Mount with its 22mm flange distance.
I concur, this is a game changing groundbreaking revolution for budget anamorphic acquisition. I look forward to you running it through it's paces more extensively. I have been waiting on this lens, sadly I missed the first tier of the Indiegogo campaign and had to order it at $599. At that price it is still a steal and I can hardly wait to have it in hand to shoot with my Panasonic GH cameras. Tito have you considered publishing a de-squeeze guide based on the distance as your actual real world testing demonstrated? It would surely be helpful.

I love the look of focus racking on anamorphic lens when the background/foreground gets squeezed when racking between 2 subjects, does this lens achieve that result since its a 1.33x squeeze?

I am using SIRUI 50mm F1.8 camera lens with my SONY ZV E-10. According to the manufacturer of Sirui lens, "it should enlarge the horizontal field of view to up to 33% to achieve a FOV equivalent of an APS-C 37.5mm lens." However, my Sony E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens has a bigger enlarged FOV. Are there any settings on my Sony ZV E-10 that needs to be tweaked after installing the SIRUI 50mm F1.8 camera lens. If I wanted to try anamorphic, would you recommend the 50mm or the 35mm on an ASP-C sensor as a first anamorphic lens to try? Great channel by the way, enjoy the content. Cheers.

In the video you say that it’s ok with ASP C or Super35 sensors. Be careful because Sirui told me it would not work on a Super 35 ASP C would be the limit However I would love it if you had a chance to verify that because I would love it !

Tito Ferradans so if I get you, it won’t cover a super35 sensor fully, but it will cover it enough to get the amount of information we need once desqueezed

I talked to guy in a Facebook GH5 user group who says he tried this lens out during an exhibition in Paris and he says this lens is poor quality and "very very very soft". Your video of the lens doesn't seem to illustrate what he is saying to me. Can you comment on the quality and softness and on this guy's comment from your experience?
Really happy to see the product released and excited for what it means for the future of affordable anamorphic. My hopes are that there will eventually be EF or PL options as I use a Scarlet-W, even if they’re more expensive. Less than $1000 for an all-in-one anamorphic is already silly cheap, so even if the price doubled, it would be well worth it. Also looking forward to wider options as well as tighter squeeze ratios. Right... So is the issue that it’s projecting to a much closer imaging plane, so therefore problems with the size of the image circle as well as focus issues would arise with EF or PL? Just trying to wrap my head around it, since obviously my RED isn’t using a mirror, but I’m assuming there is a difference in the distance to the sensor compared to MFT.

Sounds cool. I’d be interested in what the corner quality is like if it is used on full frame and cropped to a middle range between full frame and APSC.
Cinema5D did a recent review with the Sirui 1.33x on a Fuji XT3. Same setup for me when I get my copy of the lens. Also the flares looked horizontal too. Hi Thanks, just picked mine up to play with on the sony. Dumb question , when setting the stabilisation manually i set it to 75mm. 50mm in an apsc crop. Is that correct or should i simply set it to 50mm? Though you might know.
Hey Tito, what would you opinion be of taking a lens like the sirui and adapting to make a "full set" or at least a wider range of primes. I know most wide angle adapters aren't great and teleconverters and focal reducers are annoying...but when it comes to anamorphic, as its so expensive and annoying anyway, would it make more sense to try to make it work?

I am currently running on a takinglens+2x anamorphic dual focus system for my a7iii and wondering if that SIRUI lens is probably the same as my 2x stretch system...any thoughts on this would be awesome. Hey, man, I have GH6 and I found out that this lens only covers 4K while I could shoot 5.8K on GH6. What would be your take on this? Is this something to worry about or not really?

For shooting longer videos with camera movement, I think the GH5 is better, but I wonder it you get anything more from the larger APSC sensor of the XT3 ?
@@AnamorphicOnABudget So what happens with a micro4/3 sensor? does it crop compared to the aps-c? I suppose it does not crop otherwise it would lose the 1.33x factor. But I don't know if it reduces the field of view on a m4/3 compared to APSC, and I have not sen so far any review using the Sirui on a GH5.
Hey Tito, love your videos. I've been able to learn a lot about anamorphics from them. I have a question about the sample footage, were they shot with the oval anamorfake aperture plate already put in? or were they without the aperture plate? I'm a little concerned about the rectangular front.
