While most people obsess about going wider, when shooting scope, I prefer the results much more when using longer lenses! Better separation, stronger bokeh and still a wide field of view!

Yeah, I was surprised by this one. Because, I shoot with a GH5, the 50mm is already long enough. But the 24mm isn't anywhere wide enough. I would have liked to see a wider (like a 10-12 if it's even possible) to compensate for the 2x crop of M43

Thanks for the awesome review! Your channel is an amazing resource so thank you! Question - can you easily edit footage shot with these Sirui lenses alongside footage from Spherical lenses? Am doing a short film soon and considering these lenses for much of the storytelling and mood shots, but there will be some heavy action/stunts that will require use of a much wider lens. Am wondering if the footage will look dramatically different and jarring when put together.

Ordered mine. So far I have the 50mm and 75mm. I’m trying to decide between the 35mm and 24mm now. I also have a Vazen 40mm 1.8x. My theory is I’ll use the Sirui set for majority of my work that I would’ve used a regular spherical lens for. The 1.33x allows for it to not be too distinctive while still providing something a little different. My Vazen (hope to get more) will be for more stylized shoots where I really want to lock in an anamorphic look.

24mm for me has been the most versatile because it does wide shots and medium shots well, also the closer focusing distance is very nice. If you have both the 50 and 75 I imagine you still wanna keep that F1.8 aperture tho. I’m actually trying to decide whether I want the 50 or the 75 to accompany my 24.

Am I wrong in thinking that, when shooting anamorphic.. pixels that didn't exist to begin with, are being interpolated when de-squeezing? Essentially pixels created out of thin air, but that is one of the contributing factors to the film look? aka: soft. Feel free to school me on this one.
@AfoteyAnnum
@AfoteyAnnum 3 года назад
No. The lens simply squeezes the pixels that are already there by whatever factor the lens is. 1.33x in this case. When you desqueeze, you aren't creating more pixels, just desqueezing the ones that were squished by the lens.
@mothermeeting
@mothermeeting 3 года назад
There is no interpolation happening, but the lens squeezes the light onto the square pixels of the sensor. So now you have footage with square pixels, but they really do not want to be square - since they have been squeezed into that shape. So in post we desqueeze the image - our square pixels are now rectangular pixels so to speak. Think of a rectangular sponge that was pressed into a square box - hope this absolutely untechnical explanation helps :)
@videohq1181
@videohq1181 3 года назад
@@AfoteyAnnum Thanks for the reply. I am really trying to cut down misinformation on this topic. Back in my broadcasting days the format of choice was DVCPro HD. Basically anamorphic into a 4x3 recording with a 16:9 AR flag. On editing, the video would be de-squeezed to 1920x1080, but the recorded pixels were 1440x1080 regardless. As you know, there is no such thing as rectangular pixels, and once 1440x1080 were recorded, that's all there was to it. The only way for the image to look "proper" was by desqueezing... aka: stretching the image wider, which is where the "pixels out of thin air/softer look" remark comes from. Just making sure that high-end anamorphic works the same way.
@AnamorphicOnABudget
@AnamorphicOnABudget 3 года назад
Good point here, and yes, misinformation is easy to come by on the subject. If you're stretching OUT the footage by multiplying the width by the squeeze factor, you are interpolating and "creating" pixels, which can yield softer images. It's pretty hard to notice on 1.33x lenses though, and it would be more applicable to 2x lenses. The alternative is to reduce the height of the image, which compresses the picture and gives you "normal looking" footage and, at the same time, a higher vertical resolution, since you're packing information more closely together, so a *sharper* look, in theory. Again, very hard to notice. For my own workflow, I usually reduce the height instead of increasing the width. I even made a calculator to maximize use of the recorded area, which mixes reducing the height and extending the width by specific values: www.tferradans.com/arcalc/go :) I hope this helped clarify the question!
@videohq1181
@videohq1181 3 года назад
@@AnamorphicOnABudget It certainly did. I wasn't considering a vertical squeeze here, which would definitely yield a sharper or more detailed final image. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Mist filter, LARK, Potato Jet response, Studio Binder response, Split Diopters, April Fool's prank, the one about MTF Services, and so on.
