Forrest Gump was completely original, had brilliant acting, a great soundtrack, wonderful characters, and reminded us of moments in history that SO many of us could relate to... what's not to love?

I didn't know this existed thank you for posting I saw Forrest Gump eight times in the theater more than any other movie I ever saw in the theater

Forrest Gump was so successful because it was pure escapist fantasy about a simple, unremarkable, easy to understand person with relatable feelings (i.e. his love for Jenny) who has extraordinary things happen to him. People can really relate to that and they want those extraordinary things happen to them!

In February 1994, Forrest Gump earned 13 Academy Award nominations. The most for a film since Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

Honestly it was San and Jenny that i fell in love with,. we get to see the times and America change through Gump's eyes, but we get to see Dan and Jenny change and grow as people. both of them are in dark places and spend years trying to run away and escape their demons, and whenever they get too tired and ready to give up Forrest is there. a safe calming presence, a friend that wont judge them or try to fix them but just be there and listen. Forrest also has a moment where he needs to quite literally run away for years, but once he gets tired and goes home Jenny and Dan are now happy and healthy and there for him, thanks to Forrest they both found their way through the darkness. unfortunately it was too late for Jenny, but she left Forrest the greatest gift and joy in the world and Dan gave him the comfort to never have to worry about little things again.

In the mid 90s, baby boomers were in or entering middle age, and Forrest Gump is a nostalgia film for boomers.

I really like Forest Gump HowwwwwwwEVA, Shawshank was the real best picture that year. Top 10 movie of all time IMO and it was robbed of the Oscar.

I agree both Pulp Fiction and Shawshank were better and more Oscar worthy but Gump still isn’t a bad film. It has lots of strengths to be sure but I think all of the Oscars needed to wait another six years for when Hanks and Zemeckis made Cast Away. That was a better film and a better pairing of them as star and director. Gump still has merits but I think these guys did a little better with their second paired movie.

Jwbaxter85, thanks for posting this! I agree with your list of favorite Hanks movies EXCEPT Dragnet. I thought that movie was terrible and an insult to the memory of Jack Webb.

It’s an ok film and it’s visuals are simply amazing but I felt Hanks and Zemeckis did better with Cast Away six years later. Sadly Gene missed that one.

Brace yourself 1994 Americans - the worst is yet to come. (Hell, brace yourself 2023 Americans for probably the same reason)

I don’t really think Gump is trying to spread a political message. It just wants to be entertaining which it was for the most part.
