Same here. I'm an atheist, but damn if I don't love this movie and sing along to this song whenever I hear it. It just has such a positive energy to it that it always fills me with joy. It's one of my go-to songs whenever I'm down in the dumps and need some cheering up.
2:12 - 2:18 There is something heartwarming about seeing Monsignor Ohara gesturing for them to come in, and the look of "Oh, we're actually welcome? We can come in?" on their faces.
That's how everyone should be greeted when walking into church.....welcomed and accepted with open, loving, unconditional arms no matter what they're wearing or what they look like!
I also like how the woman wearing blue in the last pew is tapping her hand against her body, indicating that she's enjoying the up-tempo song. It's as if the director was saying, "not all older people are incapable of enjoying modern things!"
The voice of Mary Robert is performed by Andrea Robbinson. You can see and hear her in the 25th anniversary special, as part of the choir in " i will follow him"
I live in New Orleans and it’s not at all uncommon to hear this kind of praise at Catholic masses. In fact, there are a few Catholic churches that are famous for it. Music is an important element of life here and gospel music, in particular, can be heard in any denomination. It’s so powerful. It can make you fall so deeply in love with your faith.
the song is of Mary, and the title - Salve Regina means - Hail Holy Queen in Latin. So they are dedicating this hymn to Mary, the mother of Jesus and in catholicism a very respected saint.
Regardless of whos voice it is, the actress spendidly convey the shift in her emotion, from shame and timidity, to fully acceptance with the maria and the last solo. Goosebump each time
I love how the faults of the choir before Deloris were either turned into it’s opposites or embraced. Also Mary Robert is the most adorable person ever.
@@rafac7384 No its been erased from the internet, but dvd's of it are only on ebay and such. Basically its an hour of Whoopi's character talking, ranting and reacting to conversations on the telephone and the neighbors she lives near from inside her flat. Only to find out in the end that her telephone was never connected and she was delusional the whole time. And whoopi really was on a drug induced bender at the time of them filming the movie.!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Ive only seen the nuns once. Usually from overseas in Africa one will come once a year and as a missionary to ask for support. They are amazing workers of God, but they don’t sing like this unfortunately. They are not slow and boring hymns they are actually pretty exciting because they correspond with our liturgical readings that day. I feel like how they must have felt singing in the movie because I am singing to the Lord our God. Love this movie, it is so good. I’m a convert Catholic btw, so I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers because it is possible to change our habits.
Something I think is that god gave us the music as a way to express our emotions. I understand that some level of respect has to be mantained while in the Lord's precense. But if you sing to him, don't you want him to know you are happy to be in his precense? That's what she added to the chorus, the happiness.
Wendy didn't sing in sister act or sister act 2. She actually asked not to sing in the movies so they had someone else sing an dub. On the view sister act reunion show, she did sing... well let's just say she tried...
@@harackara9723 What is the point of linking that unrelated content here? It has nothing to do with Sister Act nor Loveoldies50's comment. It seems like you are just trying to get clicks for the video.
Grew up in the mid 80's. I wasn't a Catholic. Mom was. Only knew of Whoopi Goldberg through her role in Star Trek. This movie changed alot of my thinking at the time. Now-a-days, cant say I am too impressed with Whoopi on The View, but either way, this movie was an absolute banger. Definitely my favorite scene in the movie.
Which they should NOT do, because Mary is dead. You should be honoring Jesus. He is the ONLY One Who can get you to Heaven. A dead person has no powers. They can't hear anything. They can't see anything. They can't DO anything. They are dead. Jesus is ALIVE. Sing to living people ~ not the dead.
@@tomjennings1982 Look through the Bible. You will not see it ANYWHERE that Mary was taken alive into Heaven. In Luke11: 27 a woman called out "Blessed is the mother who gave You birth & nursed you.", but Jesus corrected her. Mary gave sin offerings and called Jesus "my Savior". This means she knew she sinned and needed saving. BTW ~ name calling - real mature.
This particular part of the movie was very close to what happened to me while assigned to Arkansas. The neighborhood is rough in the movie & I went out to see what was going on in a particularly "bad" neighborhood. I was alone & walking around the center building. A rather rough young man came up to me and asked what I was doing there. I never told them I was a Fed I always told people that I was there to make sure the children were receiving the best of care. He asked what was bad about the center. I showed him the needles, broken beer bottles & broken other liquor bottles. He said he would see that it was cleaned up. And, just like this movie he kept his word. I was told that he was the gangs boss. He kept his word. He wanted the children safe. Just like in this movie.
Good old community involvement, helping the youths, and setting a good example. You're doing good out there ma'am and setting the bar that younger generations want to follow.
@@ThirrinDiamond I did compose a poem about my escapades in Arkansas & Louisiana. I won a National Poets Society Silver Bowl & it was published in a poetry book & a DVD.
There is only one Whoopi and we are so very lucky to live in the world of Whoopi. She is funny, serious, smart and she is an author. Thank whoever it took to bless us with her talent.
What I always love is there not perfect like they a little pitchy at points but the passion and joy just carries them through it. They still getting better but they have the talent that Whoopi brings out.
I used to go to a chiropractor across the street from this church. It was wild to go during filming and seeing the street all slummed out. It’s actually a nice neighborhood. Thanks

These anthems were incomparable! Thats the first reason i loved that movie! These are scenes from the old good movies that give you chills of happiness n tears of reminiscence!
God, I haven't watched this movie in DECADES! And this video just popped up in my recommendations and it just all came flooding back. Loved this movie SO much.
I was at the meeting of Pope John Paul II with the young people. World Youth Day, Denver USA 1993. And I will never forget that on the closing day of the event, August 15, a choir sang this song to John Paul II in this version. The Pope really heard it.
When I first saw this movie and this scene I remember the part where the people off the street heard the music and walked in. They were even unsure if they'd be welcome until the priest invited them with the hand motion. Later in life it made sense. God teaches the lost in so many ways. This is just a fictional movie but that always stood out. People get upset when church gets modern and theatrical but as long as you dont take away from the true meaning. I think in the next scene Whoopi Goldberg makes a statement about "getting buts in the seats"
Baby they ate that song up especially girl in the middle the shy one they did that little motivation can take you a long way she just wanted to show them all the best side of them. And I’m here for it.
I have my TV set to play this whenever I want. It is so amazing. Another amazing fact is that the dubbed voice for the novice matches just what you'd expect her to sound like.
This scene speaks to the power of music and how it can beautifully bring people to God. People were drawn in because of the singing. Then they sit and stay for the rest of the sermon. Same thing the following week. And the following weeks after that. Before you know it, they’ve repented their sins and have turned to Christ.
I will always love watching which nuns nail the clapping, which nuns try their best but fail the clap clapclap, and which nuns know their strengths and don't even try.
