Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, etc, they helped Rock & Roll grow out of it's infancy . But Sister Rosetta, a fabulously talented & brave gospel singer & musician, she gave birth to the the sound that would take over the world. They finally admitted her to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in December, 2017. She should have had her own wing before they even opened the doors.
Yes she should have her own Wing with a Crown for the Guitar Queen! It's so sad that it took until December 2017 to give Rosetta her Rightful place as The Godmother of Rock n Roll! Well at least it finally happened. 👑🎸🎶💞
The dreadful power of the internet. One person makes a pile of wild claims and suddenly it's the truth! Sister Rosetta was nowhere near as influential as this documentary claims and, compared to Charlie Christian ( who was massively influential ) she was musical small fry.
Why nobody talked 'bout her before... easy: - she was born black - she was born WOMAN - she crossed over gospel to secular world... She is a hero!! 🙌🙌🙌
Her skin color had nothing to with it. If it was, chuck berry was black and he was famous. Nor did her sex have anything to do with it as there were mamy famous singers who were famous (although they werent rock singers. ) I think a big part of it comes down to she was a gospel singer.
@@angelasantiago7426 you didnt watch this then. i knew from the minute her friends started talking about her. its so obvious that anyone should see it. she just stayed with men because back then, nobody took a woman serious. sorry if i busted your strait bubble but you clearly are oblivious to the obvious. her religion probably made her keep it very hidden. i know all too well myself.
Wow! When my older sister left home in around 1967, her bus stopped for lunch in the South and she could not go in the store to buy food because they didn't serve Blacks. A kind, White gentleman did the same for her--he bought the food and brought it out to her. She's now 69 years old and just told me about this last year. Just goes to show you, there always have been people who would choose to do the right things. My life have been blessed by so many of them. And I try to pay it forward. Praise God.
amen. i cried watching this. i cant understand how people can be so full of hate. she should have had a red carpet rolled out wherever she went. watching this has changed me forever.
Yes she was an inspiration to all! A movie needs to be made about her! She also deserves a Entire Wing at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame not just a picture!! I can't believe it took until December of 2017 for her to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! Goddess They owe the very Name "Rock n Roll" to Sister Rosetta Tharpe!💞👑🎸🎶🙏
Sister Rosetta tharpe's story should be put out be HBO pictures w/Queen Lattiffa Playing the role, she be perfect for the role, Queen Lattiffa looks like Rosetta Tharpe!
I totally agree with you. I just saw an off broadway production about her life called "Marie and Rosetta". Kecia Lewis gave an amazing portrayal as Sister Rosetta Tharpe. However, I just kept thinking how perfect Queen Latifah would be for the Broadway or movie version.
How many people that love(d) the music that she 'birthed' have never heard of her? We all need to do everything we can to let everyone know who is responsible for this music. She is INDEED, 'The Godmother of Rock 'n' Roll'!
This morning on the Entertainment segment on the BT morning show they were praising Elvis Presley as the King of Rock n Roll! That phrase drives me crazy! So I educated everyone on the Live chat they have, that Sister Rosetta Tharpe was the Godmother of Rock n Roll and that Elvis Presley had stolen everything from her except his voice! No one had ever heard about her! So I recommended everyone check out this documentary! Bless your Rock n Roll Soul siSTAR!💞👑🎸🎶🙏
The true story has to be written FROM THE BEGINNING, AS IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. . When done , well only need one book to study- History- not black, white, American Indian ,Southern Folk.... as each can hold his/her own. TRUTH!! LOVE this documentary. Truth of history
I am so sad/angry that I had never heard of this amazing boundary breaking woman before today. What a talent. What drive. Light years ahead of her time socially, that's abundantly clear. Thanks for putting this documentary out into the world.
Its amazing how We women have been steamrolled over and treated with disrespect and disregarded for what we've done! Thank the Goddess that we are starting to Wake Up and reclaim our Herstory, working together to taking our RIGHTFUL PLACE in the World!! 💞👑🎸🎶🙏
I'm with everybody else, WHY/How is it she didn't become a houshold name ? I'm soooooooooooooo glad someone had the insight to document her on video ! All these years later, she's still gaining new fans.. I am definately a Fan !
+U.S. SAM because she was a black woman (2 double whammies) and in the 30's & 40's, no person was going to give her as much recognition as they did Chuck Berry, B.B. King and the like. She is in the Blues Hall of Fame, though.
Exactly! When I hear people claim Elvis Presley is the King of Rock n Roll, it drives me crazy! So I always take the time to Educate them about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the TRUTH was that the King was really A Queen of Rock n Roll the Godmother of Rock n Roll Sister Rosetta Tharpe! Goddess Bless her musical spiritual Soul! Loved to know more about her relationship with Marie Knight!💞🎶🎸🎹🥁🙏 There needs to be a Movie made about her life and everything she accomplished and survived!👑🎶🎸🙏
I just discovered Sister Rosetta Tharpe! Queen of Rock&Roll!!! Her voice and guitar playing is magical and I have no doubt she was the biggest force to influenced the singers that came latter. Rosetta deserves greater recognition as the original! Crazy, only in 2017 she was included in the hall of rock fame. I am from Chile, 79 years old, and fell in love with her singing and guitar playing. Thanks, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, i love rock&roll and dance it since i was 15, down in Chile :)!!!
Funnily if she had just become a housewife and settled down had kids we probably wouldn’t be here talking about her, and rock n roll might have been country!
Massy Biagio Because many of the so-called roll and roll historians chose to "rewrite" music history. It doesn't in their eyes make "good copy" to give TRUE credit where it is undeniably deserved. They eventually will start giving her the accolodes her deserved in her lifetime. But it is such a travesty, she deserved the awards when she was alive. Another example of American hypocrisy. Too little too late! It is utterly embarrassing that English writers, historians and critics know and celebrate her than her own countrymen and citizens. To the creators and producers of this video, THANK YOU!
A woman after my own heart! This is the tragedy of separatism. I’m white & missed out knowing of this wonderful, talented woman of integrity & grit. Had I known of her in my teens my life might have taken a different turn. In my day, in the ‘60’s, it seemed only white men played the electric guitar. What a loss! She was epic! And, yes, that her songs were stolen & her legacy brushed over needs to be told NOW!
same here. i was in band in school and never heard her name even once but fate led me here. it seems like she called us all together. i love the power of music.
I have simply adored her since the very first time I heard her joyous voice and miraculous guitar - today's "axe men" owe it all to her.....the angels are rockin' with that greatest of ladies & her music!
Whatever you believe you can't resist the free flying style of Sister Rosetta Tharpe who invented what the world had been waiting for... Thank You Sister!
Imagine it's 2022 and because of RU-vid you just found out that some guy named Elvis Presley exited back in the day. That's how I feel right now. I had no idea this godess of Rock and Roll ever walked among us. I'm actually ashamed. Wow. What an amazing talent.
@@ruisglass5581 dont worry, i just learned about her and i plan on keeping her spirit alive. i was very upset that i was in school band so many years and never heard of her until youtube & fate brought me here. this is life changing stuff. schools just brainwash kids to take orders & conform. those who are ment to find her, do. those are the real music lovers & seekers of things greater than any school can teach.
Until today I never knew of this Wonderful Saint's existence. But, I am thankful to have FOUND her. her Singing, and Songs are a wonderful Blessing. To all who here her, may be blessed as well. In Jesus Christ's Name, AMEN. I will be sharing much of her work.
well that's terrible, that kept her from moving forward, she was a great musician !!!! Well we are all just Sinners saved by God's GRACE!!! No doubt if that's true It was a thorn in her side!!! But, God's GRACE is Sufficient !!!
This takes me back to my Sunday School days growing up in the South. Hard times back then, but the days were, oh, sooo sweet and peaceful. She was my Grandmother's favorite. I'm so glad I found her here on RU-vid back in 2012.
2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominee . . . Sister Rosetta Tharpe is one of the essential figures in the history of rock and roll. If she had not been there as a model and inspiration, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and other rock originators would have had different careers. No one deserves more to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Sister Rosetta became famous in 1938 with a record called “Rock Me.” She was a star through the 1940’s, a black woman singing gospel music to the accompaniment of her own driving electric guitar - howling and stamping. Her 1945 recording “Strange Things Happening Every Day” has been credited as the first gospel song to cross over to the “race” (later called “R&B”) charts - reaching Number Two and becoming an early model for rock and roll. She was a sensation, selling out arenas into the 1950’s. In 1947, Sister Rosetta was the first person to put a 14-year-old boy named Little Richard Penniman on a stage. It changed Little Richard’s life - he decided right then to become a performer. In 1951, twenty-five thousand fans paid to attend her on-stage wedding at Griffith Stadium in Washington DC. She was the hottest act on stage with a guitar. She became a model for Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. Johnny Cash called her his favorite singer and biggest inspiration. By the early Sixties the musical revolution she inspired had forgotten her - so Sister Rosetta went to England and played electric guitar for the young blues fans of London and Liverpool. Without Sister Rosetta Tharpe, rock and roll would be a different music. She is the founding mother who gave rock’s founding fathers the idea.
Elvis and cash and Lewis never invented anything associated with rock and roll. They got the music from Berry and Richard, etc, who actually carried tharpes sound to the level of rock and roll.
Unbelievable that Sister Rosetta has over the decades been kind of edited out of the history of Rock & Roll… listening to her incredible guitar playing it’s clear she played a major, largely uncredited, part in the creation of the genre… and as for her voice… it’s absolutely amazing!
As we mourn Chuck Berry today, let us never forget this GENIUS! By the way, who are the 11 troglodytes who thumbsed this video down? I can hazard a guess a to the demographic, i'll leave it at that
Undeniable influence on early Rock and Roll. I can't believe how many years she pre dates Ray Charles fusion of gospel and secular music. His fusion of course was an enormous contribution to the formation of R&B, which was itself lent itself to Hip Hop. Unreal.
To be so influential and instrumental to the development of American culture despite the suffocating weight of discrimination, segregation, and racism is absolutely miraculous, and despite overcoming all of that, the history was still suppressed and buried. Her contributions should not be ignored anymore.🙏
+Jaron J. Hall probably because she is not as well known as the others were, so no producer/director and other powers that be would really know how many would actually go see the movie. But, I would like if Queen Latifah played her in a bio movie.
I'm glad this was shared such a talented lady. Never heard of her before to have made such an impact on rock n roll. I really pray that white people see the wrong in how they treated and continue to treat people of color.
It's interesting to see how the white audience in the UK embraced Sister Tharpe compared to the segregated US. When bands like the Rolling Stones first came to the US and the white audiences went crazy for them and asked the Stones where did the music come from. The Stones were quite astonished and said they came from the US! That is the Black blues music of the southern states, which white audiences in the north didn't take notice of.
Thank you so much. I loved this. I knew almost nothing about her but I really enjoyed learning her history. It's the history of rock and roll! She is the Queen of Rock and Roll!
God bless her always ! Never gave up ! Her faith got her through everything life through at her ! Highest of praise to her , an inspiration to many generations !
I just like everyone else am totally disgusted that this Queen didn't get her recognition. I found out about her by watching the new Elvis movie premiere online. I am totally shocked and horrified that once again a Black person is denied the legitimate title of their work. She is the Queen and founder of Rock n Roll. Shame on the USA. This documentary should be on amazon prime, I can only imagine what else they have hidden from the world.
This cut of the documentary seems to have removed a segment about the relationship between Tharpe and Marie Knight, which suggests the two were romantically involved based on the accounts of their friends, it's pretty unsettling to see it edited out. The full version is available on youtube in four parts
Rosetta toured alll over Europe and South America. I have several hours of those unissued recordings and they are touching. She was more than talented, gifted. And she could put together a group and sign with an orchestra or band or choir.
There should be a movie made about Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Movies have been made abut everyone except her this is 1 person who was a person of the queen of music.
"Movies have been made about everyone except her." -- Ha! I wish the were true. I'm wanting someone to do a movie on Hazel Scott. Look her up if you must.
Each one teach one! I must say we all have something or someone who influences our life period!! When we do, we must acknowledge who or what it was. Shout out to the Black people that paved the way for us all💪💪💪. Thank you from my Heart😢😢🙌🙌👏👏👑😘

I’ve seen countless interviews of Little Richard and find it kind of interesting how he paints himself as architect and founder but rarely mentions her other than “discovering” him or some such. Much as I love the guy.
Sing it, Sister! ... and play that guitar as only you know how. There was a time when I would have let the "gospel" in the Sister keep me from this fabulous vibrant magnificent musician. I regret my narrow mindedness, and am thankful that I have finally learned a little bit about Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I just read her biography (by Gayle Wald), and ordered 4 CDs/CD sets so I can get a fuller idea of the music she recorded ... going away back to 1938. When Count Basie and Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young were striding the stage, and Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker were stacking up the explosives that would turn music modern, Sister Rosetta was already there, giving glory to whoever heard her, and laying down tracks for who knows how many generations of guitarists.
This is a Awesome documentary ! I accidentally discovered Miss Tharpe when I watched her sing “ This Train . I was so impressed . Now I know ! I am a 60 year old white man living in west Missouri . I love ❤️ it !
