Losing creativity is absolutely normal, I once had a two year hiatus from photography, Came back more motivated than ever

Man this video resonates with me so much! Being OCD, I tend to obsess over doing something til I burnout. I even sold my gear once. Big mistake. I just needed to take a break from it! And finding success, getting noticed resonates too. As an introvert, it can be so hard to stay engaged to continue to grow your presence and get your name out. Still a work in progress, but identifying your shortcomings is a good start!

I did the same things many years and sold all of my good gear at the time. The reason was that I was in a job I hated, that was just wearing me down and I was lucky to take the camera out 3 or 4 times a year at one stage. I totally regretted the decision and will never make the same mistake, regardless of what is going on in my life.

There are people who are very good photographers, have the skills and the know how. What they can't do is sell, there has to be a salesperson in there too. Or maybe use an agent.

So beautifully articulated. Yes these are some of the harshest truths about photography and would apply to a lot of other aspects of life as well. But as long as we know how to deal with them, we should be able to take them in our stride and move forward. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Well done Roman. Yup, this is a good reminder that our expectations are the cause of our frustration. Sounds simple. I find it helpful to regularly remind myself that there is very little about life over which I have any control. But, I do have the choice to control myself and my own expectations. I agree with your leave all behind and move on approach. Keep your attention on what you are trying to achieve, even when this is difficult. What we might be trying to do today is often just a small part of our overall goals. Love your work. Thanks for sharing.

Really good thoughts. I agree that setting the camera down for a few days or a week or two is good practice. One thing I do as well is vary my photography. My photography passions are birds and wildlife, landscape and streetscapes and travel - in that order although my interests are variable. By switching gears between them I find my interest in each is rekindled.

My main camera is a Sony Nex C3, I use a Fujian 35mm CCTV lens and a 32gb SD card, such a cheap set up but the results I get I am happy with. I have spent money on the wrong cameras and lenses in the last 5 years and sold them for a loss but the C3 and the fujian have been with me all the way. It took me a while to realise I don't need better equipment to get the same results.

Thanks for another great video, Roman. I find a way to avoid getting stuck in a rut is to change genres regularly or every now and then. If I spend too much time in one photography genre I feel I get a bit stale and need a change. Mixing it up or trying something new helps get the creative mojo back.

What I found was that camera settings, camera technique and buying gear is the easy peasy part. Once you try to make consistently good and creative images, all of those things are trivial in comparison! I myself have been so stuck into thinking about gear that I found it to be something I hide behind instead of facing the very deep creative rabbit hole

One way to reduce the risk of wasting money on gear is to avoid buying gear without a clear and specific reason, just because I feel like it or because I believe it will "make my images better". If I only buy new gear to address a specific problem, it's much more likely it will actually help me with it. For example, I recently bought a new camera not because my previous was already 11 old or "to make better photographs" but because I saw that images taken in low light scenes where I wanted to photograph were more noisy than I found acceptable and because I had problems with autofocus accuracy and reliability in these scenes. So I did research and bought a camera that was supposed to handle these scenes better - and I got exactly what I wanted (and more). The same way, there is no point buying a new lens "to make better photos". What makes sense is to buy a new lens to provide longer (or shorter) focal length or wider apperture than I have (if I want to take such images). Or if I can clearly see that the image quality is worse than I find acceptable. Or if I want to shoot action sports or birds in flight and my lens cannot focus fast enough for that. New gear should address a specific problem, then it may actually help, if it's a vague phrase like "to make better photographs", you are going to end up disappointed.

All very true! I especially find that the burnout/rest issue is so important. If you push too hard it's just not good. I end up with more crap produced, in my opinion. The big takeaway is that everything is cyclical and just go with it! Thanks Roman.

Thanks Roman, great video. Wasting money on gear - "Guilty, your Honour". From 2024, I will only permit myself to buy a new lens AFTER I have donated the exact amount to a charity. Photography is my hobby and, therefore, it is a privilege.

Hi Roman! What is the best non fujinon lens for fujifilm would you say? I'm looking for something that is f1.4 or lower and cheaper than the fujinon lenses. Great content btw!
@bmeclipse

Well said. I live in a place where 6 mos out of the year, the temps are well above 40, where there are few interesting opportunities or where there are great backdrops, you’re not allowed to use your expensive photography gear there. I make do, keep my head down, practice my craft, work on new tools, use my iphone (which I hate doing), all to keep me going.

Hey Roman, curious on your process. If you're going to a new city for the first time do you fully research everything and have an idea of shots or ramble around without much direction just following your feet?
@snapsbyfox
@snapsbyfox 8 месяцев назад
Generally a mix of both but I prefer to initially walk around. I do research which general areas to visit / avoid. It also depends how remote or distant the location is. For example in Tokyo I will be doing a lot more research than in Lisbon. I have a blog on this coming

Dude I gotta say - you are an excellent teacher. I’m normally not a leave a comment kinda guy but I just felt compelled to give you full props. As a hobby photographer, I have found it to be a much longer journey than most to grasp the technical aspects of photography. So, I have watched aloooot of photography channels and yours really is excellent. Well explained and easy to grasp, and yet filled with so much technical detail and useful, practical advice that just “clicks”. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. Bravo.

I don't think you ever mastered this craft. I think we are all students of evolving and yup. I'm at that stage now where I teach Photography also in my local community I sell lots of landscapes I sell lots of other Photography as well and do events as well, so I've reached a high-level, but I'm still learning and I always will be. I stay humble. I don't like the term professional amateur novice. I hate it. Actually, we are all students on the same journey of self improvement.

@@snapsbyfox I'm leaving teaching photography to people who have mental illnesses and autism and I can tell you that's more rewarding than any brilliant photo I've ever taken knowledge with the world and get more people out into the environment streetscapes whatever it is just because it's a healthy mental space. I love your videos mate as they're always a different perspective full stop one day I will probably have my own RU-vid channel when I get the time. Thanks

It sounds like you have a bee in your bonnet regarding another photographer who is achieving more success than you but with less talent. That same thing occurs in most professions I’m afraid. Them’s the breaks, I’m afraid.
@snapsbyfox
@snapsbyfox 8 месяцев назад
Not at all. Certainly not now. Over the last 2-3 years I have become very selfish and in my own lane in terms of photography with zero interest in what others do. It's both a blessing and a curse. The only exceptions are good friends who are way more talented than me.
