We’re getting to the business end of the Six Nations so Payno, Hask and Tinds preview what’s likely to be a gripping slate of penultimate-round games.
With Marcus Smith dazzling for Quins over the weekend, Tinds predicts some surprising line-up changes for England, Payno’s desperate to know why international teams don’t throw caution to the wind more often & Hask derails the conversation with a nod to Jamie George’s sporting repertoire.
And just when you thought you knew everything about Payno, he lets out that he was in Pony Club as a youngster…

I listened to an interesting podcast this morning on a well known Irish rugby podcast. It was breaking down the coming matches based on the statistical analysis of each team over the last three rounds. England look to be favourites for the French match on the weekend. It’s an interesting way to look at the matches.

Completely agree with Haskell's point about certain players being "dropped" becomes a massive side show so coaches end up with "undroppable" players. It holds us back, unfortunately the media will always do that. Need a coach that's willing to make decisions for the right reasons rather than being scared of creating a side show. Itoje and Farrell are huge players for England and will be a big part of the World Cup but the fact is certain players are playing well in their positions too and deserve a chance to show it.

Completely disagree. Maybe it we will give people something to talk about in the press . That's not a bad thing if it keeps rugby in the press when otherwise there are minimal stories . What's the point of having the largest player pool to pick from if coaches are afraid to use it .

Seems to me the best top quality 10's should be able to play to any game plan. The written media's downer on Farrell is ludicrous, for me he's one of the two best 10's England have ever had and I've been watching for over 50 yrs (sorry Hask).Farrell has shown his versatility already on many occasions but his place kicking is a bit off . I'd bet he doesn't miss one on Saturday. Smith has yet to bed in but it's obvious he's a top 10, although his kicking from hand has been wayward under pressure. We should be celebrating the fact that England has three top 10's to pick from?
@jakemiddleton5266
@jakemiddleton5266 Год назад
Agreed, they can all play any role required. And Farrell is only second to Wilkinson to me, simply because Wilkinson transformed the game with his work ethic. Even Dan Carter sings his praises and says what an influence he is. That sais, all players have their super strengths. DVM and Shane Williams are both great wingers, but do the job differently to maximise their skill set. Farrell is a beast competitor who gets the basics right in attack and defence. Forwards love him because he keep them going forward. Ford is best at manipulating defences over phases. He is a chess master in attack. Smith is best at exploiting space, not just for himself, but drawing attention for other players to run lines and take players on 1-on-1. They can, and do week in week out, do lots of other things very well. But those are the areas that they excel (as far as I see it). With 3 truly international standard players, England have the best strength in depth at 10 in the World right now. The only position we can say that. I think that is why Ford was brought in last week - give him exposure to the new England team so he can step in as soon as he is needed. But I do think you are missing a trick by not taking Farrell off for Smith at, say, 60 minutes. Even in the last few years at Sarries where they are opening up more, Farrell is less experienced at pressing the accelerator. Smith is just as reliable a kicker and is so good at exploiting space. He is also the only one of the three who regularly gets into the position where his team is going backwards and he needs to get them out of trouble. Against teams better drilled and more used to playing together (e.g. Ireland) or able to dominate gainline and set-piece (e.g. SA) that is bound to come in useful as play breaks up. Using them as a 1-2 punch just makes sense to me. And then Ford replaces whoever gets injured / isn't on form. That way you always have 2 international quality 10s, 1 of which at least has over 80 caps at all times. That gives England real experience in that position to offset the inexperienced JVP and Mitchell (who I think are the 2 best 9 options, but we have a lot of potential 9s who can be brought in), and inexperienced 12 .
@paulcole
@paulcole Год назад
Farrell has been abysmal off the tee, smith is exciting and goes back to quins doesnt sulk and leads them to a huge win managing the game perfectly. The kid can’t do anymore! No point playing all these defensive guys if you don’t have a spark on the pitch that can create space and magic plays. It’s a similar discussion to what we used to have with cipriani, except smith is arguably the most gifted 10 on the planet
@peterjones1065
@peterjones1065 Год назад
@@paulcole Can't argue with that although Smith is about potential at the moment and needs game time. With the world cup looming, it's either stick with the known talent of Farrell (he will kick everything at the weekend I bet) or put Smith to the test now and start him in the next two games? The conundrum will be the same but at least Smith will have been seen under pressure? I think the step up from the Premiership (crap rugby) to international level is massive, and other countries, like Ireland and New Zealand ,have a more seamless transition.
