To think that a musical two people wrote in college is now a Tony Award-winning Broadway smash!! If that doesn’t scream “inspirational”, I don’t know what does!
They weren’t first! Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice were classmates they wrote Joseph and the technicolor Dreamcoat and JCS as a final project for graduation.
The Tony's NEEDS a best ensemble award and not just because Six would've 100% won it. Its an important part of musical theater that needs to be acknowledge.
I am not a musical theater fan in general. I am addicted to this cast and show. I was even saving to travel overseas to try and catch the show and know lots of people who were in that boat. That should speak volumes of how far this transcends the boundries of music.
A friend of mine in England has stepped in for every part in her time as AD on the show, even being drafted in to the West End at times to cover. She's now playing AB full time on the tour. God knows how she remembers who she is at times!
The dance captain is trained as a swing/alternate, as are 3 other actresses. Yes, it is impressive that they have to know 2 or more roles inside-out and be able to step in at a moment's notice--but filling in at the Tonys (if necessary) is her job, and she's filled in for entire performances before. It's not as if the learned the song and dance that day.
Let's give out flowers to Mallory who stepped in at the last minute. My heart breaks for Abby, but this embodied the phrase what the word "the show must go on". This was an amazing performance. We love our Queens!
Heartbroken that Abby couldn't be there, but so glad that Mallory was. It was amazing to see alternates get that level of love. I still wish the Tonys had given the entire cast a Special Tony, but at the same time, we don't need awards to know how incredible this ensemble is.
I think that if they all were there they would all get one but since one was a alternate/substitute it would not be very nice to give her a award and same treatment as the others when the """original """ was not
@@petersomlopes517 Hi! I might be misinterpreting your comment, but in Six the alternates and swings (they are not called substitutes) are treated with the same love and respect as the principal actors are by the fandom. Regardless of that, they wouldn't have received a Tony for this particular performance but for the musical in general, so Abby (the OG Broadway Seymour, if you will, who was missing) would have received the recognition either way. TLDR: "all" the cast includes the swings and they would have all been given the ensemble Tony, not just the 6 principles :)
I think its safe to say that the outpuring of love on social media, as well as the shoutout for Mallory at the end by the host shows that they do get just as much love as the west end girls
no like im talking about how swings dont get these performances like in the west end. if you look there swings will usually go there instead of the principals whereas if you look at mallory here and courtney in macys they werent gonna be there if the principal actresses were. remember when they invited collete to the show must go on instead of nat nat? i wish theyd be able to do stuff like this here, thats all.
I’ve been fortunate enough to see Six three times in the past year. I’ve seen 12 different queens perform (including Mallory.) Andrea Macasaet was the only one I saw three times. The alternates perform regularly on Broadway. And they’re all great.
Swings & understudies helped Broadway survive the return from COVID. Saw "Chicago" w/the 3rd understudy to Roxy Hart in Dec '21 and she KIIIIIIIIILLLLED. And the woman that was flown in after retiring from show biz years earlier so "Wicked" could go on? Literally SAVED. BROADWAY.
Just don’t understand the Tony judges. Except for Hamilton they usually don’t recognize crowd favorites. Hamilton started casting color blind but Six took this to the next step and started casting women of any size and shape. The whole concept is fresh and invigorating. So happy costumes and the music were recognized. You are right in that the US should embrace the understudies. I saw Mallory and she was amazing. On another note we know they recorded the whole show opening night so when will they release the deluxe version? At least K Howard slamming the queens and saying “And then I was beheaded.” should have been included.
They’ve also announced that they’re bringing back the original west end cast to do a professional recording as well so I’m not sure how that will effect the release. I hope they do a double release of them both!
If you watch closely you'll notice that during each of the queens introduction the background behind them changes into the actual ones that they have during their solos in the show. Didn't realize it 'til it was Cleves' turn when the lights behind them turned red and mimicked the silhouette of a castle. Bloody brilliant.
it's been a month and I still can't get over the fact they did not miss a single note while sprinting in high heeled boots to get to the formation for the last bit. absolute legends.
They also have it in Australia too, I like how they aren't forced the change their normal accents though. Just sing it in your regular accent, makes it much easier.
I saw the Melbourne one last week and it was lovely (but quite jarring) to hear Aussie accents. Did I really care though? Not too much since I bought another ticket to see it again
I have the opposite problem 😂 I heard the US cast first and hearing them all with British accents throws me every time. (Trust me, I promise I get the irony of that statement. 😅)
I just saw the West End production a few days ago, so obviously they had British accents... except for Anne Boleyn who was played by an ethnically Asian actress, so she had an "Asian" accent, which was weird. Especially considering the actress is actually Swedish (Asian descent), and she has no trace of an Asian accent when she speaks in real life (found a few vids on RU-vid of her not in character). It was odd.
Yeah she just changes parr in such a good way shes my third favourite behind shannen and vidya (i saw those 2 live so i guess i cant say much but they both slayed)
I absolutely love the part where Cleves introduces herself. She's got that badass personality, and she's all like, "The Queen is here." All of them were amazing, and I think it's incredible that Mallory filled in for Abby on such short notice. Understudies, swings, and alternates deserve more credit.
i am so, so proud of this show! from edinburgh fringe in 2018 to 8 tony award nominations and 2 wins in 2022?! it’s absolute insanity and a complete dream. the queens absolutely smashed this performance and did everyone so proud. especially mallory! her shout out from ariana brought me to tears!
Can we appreciate how during the introductory parts of the queens, the lights on the back look like how it does during those queens' solo songs, instead of how it normally looks like during that part in ex wives.
I really love the costume design here too, what they represent, and the microphone holders so they dance and still keep the handhelds, its pretty genius.
I just saw this show last weekend, and I didn’t really know what to expect- i absolutely LOVED IT!!!! Incredible cast, amazing music, and the costumes were insane! I had goosebumps the whole time!!
That’s awesome, same here. And it’s even more amazing that the performer who sang in this part isn’t the actual performer from the show. She was the dance captain and she only had about 12 hours to rehearse before she had to perform. That’s shows how extremely talented she is
Saw this yesterday and I cannot TELL YOU HOW MUCH I NEEDED THIS SHOW. I ended a truly terrible marriage and at times the trauma is still real. I'm also distressed and exhausted by this guy being "different" but when all ya wanna do is. I related so hard to this show. Minus the childbirth and my husband ever loving me🤣
I love this, the singing and music is fantastic! I would still love to see a musical about these women with really moving songs that truly looks into their history and experience though
I finally got to see the show on broadway a couple days after this and I had the same cast. It’s cool that the cast I had when I first saw Six will always be here on RU-vid in the form of the Tonys performance.
