I have practiced this kind of karate for 7 years. Since I'm seeing many ignorant and rude comments here I think that it would be good to educate people about it. First of all, this kind of karate is not meant to be a spectacle. It is for testing oneself. That is why we don't have people paying to watch it. Second, you can't understand what is happening if you haven't practiced it. These guys are very good at reading your moves and they have a very good sense of distance and timing. One wrong move and they get you. The absence of gloves makes it totally different from other combat sports such as boxing or kickboxing in which gloves function as a shield. A boxing guard without gloves would be useless against those guys. That is why Lyoto Machida hit so many times MMA guys with those kind of karate straight punches, because they were used to a boxing guard, which is strong in the sides but weak in the front when not having boxing gloves on. The absence of gloves and mouth pieces makes this very dangerous and that is why they hesitate so much. Many people have lost their teeth or have got their nose broken in these kind of matches. It is not a game. Many keyboard warriors mocking this in the comment section would panic if they participated in this kind of tournament against high level guys like those of the video. Those straight punches are not jabs. They have the whole weight of the body and they step forward, what results in a very explosive hit. That is why they control it. I have seen one hit KOs in this kind of competitions just because one of then failed to control the distance and actually hit the opponent. Their speed is unbelievable. You see then far away and a milisecond after you get hit. It is pretty scary. Saying that this is a "dance" because they score points and they avoid full contact is like saying that kendo is a "dance" because they use bamboo swords and they have a point system. That is nonsense. Having said that. As a person who have experienced this kind of karate for years I would like to say what to me are its main flaws: 1 - There is no continuity. If you practice this kind of karate you can get very good at timing, sense of distance and precision but you need to combine it with other styles such as kyokushin karate, kickboxing or even jiujitsu or judo to not end being clueless after the first hit. 2 - They don't use many circular hand strikes such as boxing hooks or uppercuts. So this style is strong in the front but weak in the sides. They do have circular hand strikes such as haito-uchi but they are rarely used. 3 - When they attack they usually put all the weight of the body in one strike. In a continuous combat that can be dangerous when you fail or get close to the opponent. 4 - They don't have low kicks. They use sweeps but they are not used to low kicks. In summary, this kind of combat rules is not what people who haven't practiced it usually think. It is not a "dance". It teaches a lot of technique. It is dangerous, it is not a game. But if your objective is to get good at fighting it's not enough. You must also learn other styles which do have continuity, contact at least to the body and legs, and throws, grappling, etc. But if you have the skills of this kind of karate in your toolbelt you will have and edge over people who only know the most popular combat sports of today. That is for sure. It's very tricky. I would suggest to the people mocking this to go to a high level dojo and try it. They will eat their words.

I'd disagree, the different associations across the US and world been adapting and drawing crowds for decades. My first tournament was the Ed Parker Invitational in Spokane in '80. The Parker Invitational was a very prestigious and well known event in the martial arts world, covered in Black Belt mag and one of the things besides movies, along with other tournaments that made the sport popular and why we have McDojos on every corner of America. Van Damme, Norris, Wallace, Willson and others all got their start towards fame their. The American full contact karate, which became the AKA and others adapted to a form where more people could compete and with it more spectators became involved so, it's really a matter of perspective. Unpopular, it's not.

That's why Karate Do lost so many adepts, me included, after many years of practicing it. It became fencing rather than karate... highest authorities are at the origin of the problem. My humble opinion, no intent to offend anyone here. It is a beautiful sport.
i started again after a 25year break.. well, of course technique is a bit forgotten in the beginning but 4 months in i destroy everybody to my biggest surprise. A clear sign Karate isnt what it used to be. In the old days all was about Kumite, today they are so afraid to fight. it gives me an edge everytime no matter how many DAN my opponent has got. Beautiful sport but became too political..
My interest in karate stems from the 1950's. I always remember an authority on Shotokan explaining how properly executed and focused punch or kick could kill. The origin of empty hand came about after swords were banned. It would probably shock people to be an eyewitness to man to man combat in those ancient times. Competition karate is not designed to kill or harm. When karate came to Great Britain l recall an ex Commando explaining how real life " martial art" techniques in the field, were savage and effective and light years away from sport. Nevertheless, these Japanese experts illustrate obvious ability and flexibility of their particular style and one should note that fact in respect of what is " sport " and not actual combat. MMA is another area entirely.
It would greatly favour Shotokan more as this was made by the JKA (which only focusses on Shotokan). Other styles like Goju-Ryu, Wado-Ryu and Uechi-Ryu will have to change a lot of their rules for a different ruleset that favours something else. And Olympics prefers to showcase sports that can also appear fun, safe and approachable. Hence the many restrictions to make WKF so safety concerned.
even in the JKA karate association where Shotokan karate is teached more effectively and efficiently, these are still point matches (not light contact, meaning you have to stop and go to your places after either you or your opponent scores effectively a technique on each other, after a certain number of these is reached, one of them win) In point scoring matches, slow but powerful techniques aren't effective, since they leave you vulnerable for a strike, according to the rules, you have to effectively hit from the lower torso to the head a punch or a kick fast and with technique in the other hand, karate is widely differenced by its roots and masters, for example, Kyokushin was created by Mas Oyama, a full contact karate style, you can see all of those techniques you mentioned there being used almost always
Well now, don’t be too hasty in your “quickly-jumping-to-conclusions”. I started my practice in 1963 in Los Angeles at the downtown dojo of the California Karate Association. Nishiyama Sensei had been teaching there for a short time. When I heard he was teaching there, I talked my dad into driving me there to enroll. He did, and I stuck with practice for the next twelve years until knee trouble forced me out for a while. I tested for and received my shodan at the Fall 1965 grading of the AAKF at that same central dojo; I’m proud to say that in addition to Nishiyama Sensei’s presence as chief examiner, the day was made even better by the presence of Nakayama Sensei, the JKAs chief instructor!
I apologize in advance for the question, given I am not a Karate practioner. How long normally will it take for the referee to intervene or give a warning when no contact initiated?
@@MifuneBoBune I am thinking based on my experience as a muaythai practioner. Maybe the rules or something different from other martial art practices that is why fighters take time to engage?
@@vaiyavppp It's a lot safer, especially considering the Olympics. Like Dean said, it depends on the hosting tournament which has their own, but mostly same rules.
I think a rule of inaction after 45 seconds should be introduced. If nobody even attempts anything after this time, it should be yame. After all, one is learning a martial art and should take the initiative to defeat the opponent. Where’s the urgency? Isn’t this an important component?
Karate was never meant to be even a sport, much less, have an audience that knows nothing. There would be no MMA without the original martial arts. Get a brain.

remember this guys are bare-handed and can punch the face and torso breast as they can also kick it. If they will be able to land a punch(never mind kick) to the face it may knock out or cause contusion or a black eye or injure the nose or lips.there were instances that in All Japan karate Kumite some are knocked-out by one punch or one kick. Why not spar with another with bare knuckle fist and try to hit the other face or breast with a punch. may be one will get nervous just knowing that you could be hit by abre knuckle fist no matter how well controlled it is.
I have never been convinced with the scoring practices in karate kumite. The issue is the demonstration of control, which results in some techniques not scoring because of too much control, and some techniques scoring that would not have with no control.

as a whole, if karate was taught like how MMA is taught (violently, effective and not to score points, but rather to be an effective system), karate would make a great candidate, it's already being taught like this in Kudo, and Kudo being so recently born, is already such a big competence for the UFC. (Kudo = Kyokushin karate [full contact style karate by Mas Oyama, who was taught both Okinawan and japanese karate, judo, Aikido, Kung Fu and boxing] + Judo + allowing head punches, takedowns, etc)
We can all learn karate but very few can compete. As a blackbelter If I train hard I may win against those who have same reflexes but we're unprepared.i may win against same reflexes same training time but not trained with high level instructors. To make it short reflexes is the ultimate differentiator
No my son is timing and power and strength from conditioning and most tournaments competitors neglect strength and conditioning for timing and endurance. But that doesn't mean they can't fight like tigers if they wanted to. Shotokan is a great style of Karate but it focuses too much on tournaments. I don't like the style and appreciate it.
I have the utmost respect for Karate Practicioners, especially from a particular Island(I can't remember the name,Yokonawa?,where it really is a serious Business!)But unfortunately i don't think it translates to a Spectator Sport!
@@jerryoshea3116 Okinawa, and that's japanese karate, not Okinawan, although japanese karate was found by gishin funakoshi, creator of the JKA and Shotokan style karate, the real Okinawan karate is in the legacy of Motobu Choki, known for being the best fighter in the island, but not the best leader, he didn't liked fancy things, just useful, and karate, as a whole, is useful and effective but not when teached only for scoring points.
The only thing here is to score a point. Kicks are involved, but most use punch since it is more effective. Kicking to the head is almost rare since it is easy to block and leave the opponent vulnerable. It is also a highest point to score. So in general, kicks have more range, but slower.
In my opinion there's no clear winner. Both martial arts are as effective as the practitioners understanding and proficiency in their respective arts. I'd have loved to study Aikido in addition to Shotokan Ryu
Watching this, seeing mainly gaku zuki, is disappointing , the fighters of the 80’s like Aidan Trimble SKIF, could have demolished these fighters with their immense kicking prowess and dynamic movement..
To understand why there are so few kicks, have a look at the fight Frank Brennan v Imamura. Brennan was acknowledged as having one of the deadliest kicks of his generation. But hands are simply quicker than feet due to a shorter distance to travel in a "sport" where the difference can be 1-2 milliseconds. I agree the elite British karateka of the 1980s were blessed with some of the best kicking talent ever seen and there is footage of elite Japanese fighters being clearly intimidated. However, the Japanese still won more titles than they lost. Kicks are also risky - more of a western mindset, than Japanese. If you miss a high kick in a tournament match or in a real life fight, you can leave yourself exposed as Imamura showed against Brennan.
Core Zero The intense training in Japanese Dojo’s moulds very strong techniques. Infact the instructors class can be so tough many don’t make it. As anything, it all depends on how you’ve trained and your instructor.
