We put our betta in a basic 2.5 gallon, rectangular with a long footprint. We put a deep substrate and loaded it up with plants, he seems very happy in this tank. He doesn't need the height, I'm so glad we didn't get a cube. I'm glad you're making this point here.

Totally agree! Smaller the tank, better to have the length vs depth and height. I have always thought the more surface area exposed to air just seemed healthier for the tank inhabitants. Makes total sense 😁☮️❤️🐠🦐🪴

Fabulous essay, Alex. Thank you. I love the long or bookshelf aquariums for all the reasons you cite. One interesting exception where a taller tank is preferred or better said the extra vertical space is in keeping Angelfish. Especially larger, wild or long finned varieties. There vertical body shape dictates the need for height over length. Both if possible!

Agreed, betta is a labyrinth fish. They need to gulp air to breath so they don't benefits from a tank that is too tall. They will thrive in only 3" of water depth, just make the tank longer and wider.

For apistos, 10" wide by 24"long by 6" high(you have to be willing to build your own) holds a trio nicely. I can stack them vertically every 12 to 14 inches. For Fundulopanchax, there are 3.4 gallon shoe boxes on Amazon. Angelfish pairs are okay in a 14gallon tall(hard to find anymore) or split a 29 in half with a piece of frosted glass. Eventually, they get big enough that I move them to a 20 high or build something. Severums get a 37(again, hard to find now)I think real addicts have to at some point give up on "stock" sizes and build. Forty years ago, manufacturers were making probably two and a half times the variety of "under 100 gallon" tanks that they are now, simply for inventory simplification and that has hurt the hobby.

I used to keep my fish in a teacup, but they just didn't seem to thrive in that. So I decided to buy a tank for them. I got an old M1A1 Abrams tank. It takes up a lot of room in the living room and on into my office. The bad part of the tank is that you can't really see the fish in it. I'm thinking about getting a new 30 gallon tank that I can see the fish in. I'm hoping that it will be better than either the tank they're in, or the tea cup. I had to knock a wall out to get the M1A1 tank in, and I'm not looking forward to doing it again, but I do think that a different kind of tank might be a better choice.

My Male Betta, will use all 5 gallons to move around and petrol its territory. However, there is a canopy of Limno plants over the tank, and 9 times out of 10 he is crammed in it when he is not on petrol. While my female in a 10 gallon community, prefers to hang out in 1/3 of the tank that is covered in Anubias, she will use the whole 10 gallons, but only when im infront of the tank, or if she is Hunting. Otherwise, she is in the Anubias thicket, even tho she is the alpha of the entire tank. I tried placing the male in the 10 gallon and he immediately picks a spot and camps it. TLDR from my experience, they will use all the space they have been given, to forage and hunt, but will always use their territory as a spot to sleep, rest, and hide in.

Thank you for saying this!!!! Ive always had the belief that making a habitat that curated for a species of fish is far more important than the gallons they need. An example would be an angslfish, sure, length and volume are great, but more important is depth because they need space for their fins and they are midlevel fish. Or an african butterflyfish, who also need depth most importantly compared to length. Amazing videos as always

I keep telling people this and people say im CRAZY! That a tank that is 5 gallons and very tall and not wide is not as good as one that is very wide. Fish generally want more body lengths to swim and a reasonable height. going crazy with the height doesn't give them much especially when it's at the cost of length. Side note, I believe in almost every case a 40 breeder is better than a 55 gallon. It has more square footage, and the higher width of the 40 breeder helps with fish being able to move fluidly. Instead of simply going back and forth a long display. Unless u got like angelfish or are heavily stocking small fish (in which case get a 60 gallon breeder) a 40 breeder is almost always just better.

i had a bowl, 5 liters max, filled for 1/3 with substrate and i kept 14 fish in it for a year. its my most succesfull project so far, the water is alwats clean, there is enough surface area and i have a lot of plants. the fish were small. but they couldnt grow that well either. i removed most of the fish a month ago becouse they got to big, but im still not sure if it was ethically good to keep those in there. the tank is balanced very well and houses a lot of zooplankton. i did put a view guppy babys in it again, i just love to see them grow up. they have different behavours then the fish in my 100 liter. the fish in my 5l are acting far more natural, they forage and roam around while the fish in my 100l are just swimming and do nothing. i feel like the way we use the space in a aquarium is very important. a lot of plants help to make feel the aquarium bigger. i think my adult guppys are to big for an 100l, i feel like my new 300l will be even too small for them... they need the space to roam around. they will get mored becouse of the boring space they live in. they need natural stimulation. we cant give them that in the "small" tanks we give them! i think the minimum is far to small! we overlook the natural needs from fish a lot :( the downside of my 5l bowl is that my fish couldnt grow anymore, i dont have any problems with it now, but maby in the future it will cause deformations from the spine, thats why i removed the 1 year old swordtail and 1 year old guppys from there, after a year.

To be honest, I used to keep the betta's close cousin, a paradise fish, in a 3-litre jar... It was absolutely fine for many years until after bumping into several of those animal rights activists' forums I decided to move it into a goldfish tank. The goldfish killed the paradise fish by trying to eat it within an hour or so. So much for this hunt for volume...

I accidentally made a deep substrate, shallow and wide habitat for my goldfish. First time patio tub setup, 100 gallon stock tub. I went with plain kitty litter, capped with gravel and aragonite / crushed oyster shells. Well, I put enough litter in to plant a waterlily, without realizing how much it puffs up when you get it wet the substrate is around 8 inches deep now. I did guppies in the summer for 3 years, and changed over to goldfish last year, to save on heating and needing to pull the fish at the end of summer. To feed the waterlily, I use broken up fruit tree fertilizer spikes. I also have a mojito mint plant in a basket hanging from the side, in the water at the surface level. Both the mint and goldfish survived being iced over for a couple weeks last winter.

I've kept my bettas in a 1 gallon bowl for 15 years & they did great. They had a plant on the bottom, soft substrate & a peace lily in the top. I only had 1 sick fish (they were all bought from Petco) & the rest lived 2-4 years. After the last one died, I stopped keeping them for 10 years & now have a 9g long & a 17g long for the next couple of bettas. The 9g just has some shrimp & nerites in it & the 17g has nerites, Venezuelan cories & some CPDs to occupy all of the water column. The cories love the bubbler & stay away from the still section, so I think it'll work out once the bettas finally arrive (1 for each tank). If they behave like my others did, they will probably just hang around in the same 1 gallon space as the old ones did... ^^

I really want the traditional rectangular shape. Too low aren't for me, because my substrate gets too deep for those (in my newest I'm trying out a layer of mud and gravel mixed, and a layer of sand on top). I have been thinking about getting a pretty tall one, but that would be for shrimps only, because they're using the whole space. But I have to say, your input in this video about plants in tall aquariums made me think it might be a bad idea. I love aquariums with a lot of plants...
@Korvmannen
@Korvmannen 2 месяца назад
Also if you're doing filterless like LRB then wide over tall will work better. Like your cylindrical no-filter jar that eventually stratified and got anoxic towards the bottom that made it crash, that's very little surface area:volume and depth.

Personally, I have one of the 3gal topfin easyclean aquariums and I find them super handy for higher shelves because of the easy clean tap feature. The light is also decent and plants do well in it. The betta I have in it is just as happy as the bettas I have in 10gals, but lots of larger tanks for bettas isn't really always feasible for people who keep tons of fish. I have several 2.5, 3 and 5 gallon tanks and I definitely don't have space for those to become more 10gals, 27gals, 50gals or 80s. As much as I'd love for my male bettas to experience living in my 80gals, it's not always a safe situation keeping them in community tanks.

@NinniAquariums
@NinniAquariums 2 месяца назад
Some of the spotlight-videos are really bad in that way. It seems like some people do those because that type of video is popular, not because the creator actually have something to say. They try to copy someone, but without the knowledge they're missing out on some important parts. I've also found out that things can vary a lot depending on where you live. The part of choosing a fish that likes your water parameters is what I've found most important. I have some fish that people often refer to as sensitive or difficult, and they're thriving, because my water suits them well. Others, that should be hardy, isn't the happiest here. And of course that can affect what people say about them in their videos.

I love my 14 gal cube ......but I have discovered with certain fish a square tank can cause territory issues with fish that are kept in odd numbers. The initial stress of figuring out the higherarchy in a new tank can lead to unforseen negative consequences even if you understand the habits of your fish. The dynamics of these variables are not always easy to predict.

Back in 1992 When Irv started Aqua Serene in Eugene, OR, his showroom had a really big but shallow custom built hex 60 gallon where he had a mated Moonlight Gourami pair that had spawned and was raising about 80 or more little baby fish. The tank was bare except for a couple really big Ceratopyllum Cornuta or Oak Leaf Water Sprites, The plants were huge. with aerial shoots several inches long and starting to root in the gravel. C.Cornuta can get really big in the right conditions. The Gouramis in his tank didn't appear to be too stressed, despite having open showroom on all sides and people circulating through the store looking at fish. The tank got about 3 hours after noon direct sunlight on sunny days.

As I listen to this while looking at my row of cube tanks...😅 I love bookshelf tanks but they're pretty pricey and hard to get lids for. And when you have cats and dogs, lids become a necessity. All my cubes came from the Petco 50% off sales. And ask come with the tank, lid and leveling mat so for $35 it works out better than standard tanks for me, where the tank may be on sale but then it's $25 for a lid. Cubes aren't my fav dimensions but it's hard to find sales on the really neat long tanks. Every once in awhile at my local club some weird old 5 or 7 gallon hex tank comes up for auction and I've always thought about just doing it as a deep substrate with 6+" of substrate and plants and maybe a few shrimp. It's a very odd size for a fish, they're so cylindrical. Thanks for the vid Shisho!! Hope you have a healthy, happy and relaxing weekend!!

I have some 39x58x16 cm i.e. 15x23 inch and just 6,3 inch heigh. And my guppyes seems to like it. :) That is a bit less than 8 gallons (on paper, -- the fillpercentage is lower for a flat tank, so in reality there is probably only 7 gallons of water and substrate. And also the substrate is bigger since the foodprint is bigger. So really, not a lot of water. Yet they seem to like it and make babies and everything

I appreciate coming across your video, as you just happen to put into words a lot of what I've been wondering about. I started with a narrowish 2 gallon tank (primarily long), but I just couldn't accept how it didn't seem to have much width. I'm at a squarish 2g now, and Im just at the place that I think this is the appropriate width to consider getting longer

I think longer is better, but I also think shallower is great too. I have one 3, one 10 and two 20 longs. All I have are shrimp in them with plants and substrate. In the 20 longs, I don't even have substrate, just plants which have made their own substrate. If you let life/nature lead you can sometimes be very surprised. All of my tanks are covered in biofilm on every glass. I watch my hundreds of shrimp clean one surface by half in a day. When glasses get cleaner I add more plant foods and food to make that regrow faster. Anyway, I have hundreds of happy shrimp in one 10 gal that with the substrate is only 8 inches deep with a filter made for a 20 to 40 gallon tank. Surface area and a plenum rule.

something annoying is that a lot of tank manufacturers really like to make tanks as tall as possible, which really cuts into square footage. I dont know a popular tank that isnt at least as tall as it is deep. Maybe 40 breeder?
@Fishtory

Correct. In the rimless world, they call them U or lowboy tanks. But framed tanks don't seem to follow a coherent pattern between manufacturers

For the newbs among us, where do we find the ultimate list of fish tank types and sizes? What makes a breeder tank? Are they longer?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 месяца назад
It's just a traditional thing with the names. Usually a 10, 30, 40 60 90 120g are the breeder sizes ( Also it means one the front glass is double the 2 small side glass sizes.) Long tanks tend to be MORE than 2x longer than they are wide

@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 месяца назад
Why thank you so very much. I really appreciate you asking, and thinking of supporting what I do here on the channel. It's very thoughtful of you to ask this question. Well patreon only takes like 10% at the end of the day I think, where as memberships and superchats via youtube take 30 to 40%. Then in my state and federal taxes I pay 30% on income... but I can write things off to lower it to more like 20% usually. So I'd say patreon is far better for any amounts over a dollar or two, but the nice thing is that on youtube, I can message members and unlock livestreams or various features, that I can't always do for patreon. But the 200 extra episodes content can be accessed via a Playlist I posted on patreon ( that's " private" to anyone besides people I give the link to)... and members of youtube just end up unlocking all my old community posts of audio "Fishtory". I hope this helps, and I so sincerely appreciate your thoughtful support. - Alex.

If I've already got a cube, are there any fish that can make better use of the whole volume?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 месяца назад
Well if the key is just getting fish that fit.. so as long as the cube is 5 to 10 times the dimensions of your biggest fish, itll be Okay, if its a small cube its tricky but male endlers in a group, or any tiny rasboras work well, or puffers...puffers were made for cubes.
