With the 2023-2024 competition season now complete, figure skaters have entered what is lovingly referred to as “Show Season!” In this week’s episode, we cover some of the tours and shows happening this spring and summer - and discuss why it’s slim pickings for those of us in the United States this year.
Stars on Ice Japan came directly on the heels of the World Championships - and brought all of the champions from Montreal together for audiences across the country.
From a new exhibition for Kaori Sakamoto (choreographed by one of our favs, Kana Muramoto) to backflips for days from Keegan Messing to the first SOI Japan tour for newly crowned World Champs, Deanna Stellato-Dudek & Maxime Deschamps - Japan got one incredible show. We talk about all the fun we saw - and, for some fun behind the scenes glimpses, we highly recommend digging through the Instagram handles of Piper Gilles (and the main Stars on Ice feed to see some, too).
Currently making their way through France is the French National team, on tour with French Ice Dance legends, Gabrielle Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron. While the lineup is stellar, its hard not to be most excited to see the performances from Kevin Aymoz - who, after taking a break from competition following the European Championships, is looking fantastic and again performing his stunning Bolero program for eager fans.
Unfortunately for those in the United States, Stars on Ice will not be making its way across the country this year - so fans will need to travel to Canada if they want to catch the next leg of the show.
However, on April 19th, there is a one-night-only experience coming to Leesberg, Virginia called Gold on Ice - and it is bringing a fantastic lineup. Ilia Malinin leads the all start cast that includes Madison Chock & Evan Bates, Isabeau Levito, Mexico’s crowd-pleasing Donovan Carilllo, Polina Edmunds, Emily Bratti & Ian Somerville, the aforementioned Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps and Keegan Messing - and more. We hope this brings in the crowd it deserves - and that more shows like it pop up soon!

I was surprised not to see ice dancers Flores/Desyatov in any shows. Their Nationals performance was the crowd favorite, and Bella has the biggest IG following of any US ice dancer. She's picked up 150k new followers since December. Their fan base is probably dying to see them skate in person.

We loved Flores/Desyatov at Nationals. They have a very distinct, aggressive style that is maybe a little at odds with traditional ice dance-yet obviously effective with an audience! But they're new enough and low enough on the US totem pole that they're probably overlooked for show skates (for now). There's also a section of FS fandom that side-eyes Bella's IG success. They think she's grown a following through ship-baiting her relationship with Ivan. (Like the "will-they / won't-they / did-they?" nature of Virtue & Moir wasn't a big part of their appeal?) We find her entertaining and charming, and US events would do well to start inviting them.

@@scoreography yes the pair relationship is a huge part of her appeal. But I think what most people don't realize is how much acting skill goes into creating an ice dance performance, and that acting has to be practiced beforehand. Acting is part of the professionalism. Of course a pair can get involved romantically since the conditions are mostly there, but it doesn't always happen, plus the pair can make a choice not to.

@@melroc8566 I also love them and follow Flores on socials but the US dance field is jam packed. I think it may not be a bad thing that they're focused on training instead of shows. To get closer to the top of the field they'll need to really refine their skating skills and fluidity throughout their programs which I completely believe they can do as a relatively new team.

I actually understand where P and C are coming from. They've had the opportunity to live in the world without the pressure of competition for an extended amount of time as individuals. It makes sense that they may be on different paths. I love them but I'm satisfied with just seeing the beautiful clips they post on social media. They've given a lot to the sport, I just want to see them thrive as people.

I love P and C and I enjoyed watching them skate in the Olympics and the Worlds. However, they have already won an Olympic gold medal and four World medals. I think that other skates deserve the chance to win an Ice Dance medal, particularly a gold medal.

Love your insights about broadening the viewer’s aspects of the figure skating. Adron and Wendy are really the gem. I love this show so much, I’m listening to some of the older ones, I laughed so hard when Wendy imitated Mark ‘What a shame~!’ 🤣🤣 I’d very much appreciated if you could cover something like how social media expanded the skating lovers to have more contents to watch on their hands nowadays. Kids scroll down instagram and fall in love with not just with competitive skaters, also for the ‘skating for fun’ skaters. Such inspirations like ‘I started skating at 15 and got this far at 17.’, or middle aged people love to watch ‘skating at 48’. During the season, there were so many posts like ‘is it too late to start learn skating?’ posted on Reddit so.many.times. Everytime I go to the public, I can see people in their 30s to 60s, came with their children or grand children, trying to learn skating. And their kids just love being on the ice with them. We love to watch the skating, we love to go out to watch the skating, we love to learn to skate. It’s fun! There’s no age limit to learn skating. Just wear the protective gears. I am unsure if it were like this even before the social media but this is definitely how I feel about FS these days. At least in terms of parent of early teen. There are so many fields of movements, kids find them cool and want to learn. Some of them bring their gymnastics and dancing background to the ice. It’s evolving and I can’t wait to see FS 5-10 years from now.

We’re hoping to do some videos on non-elite competitive skating and late-to-learn skating! We think that there are a few elite/pro skaters on social that do an amazing job of making people want to skate. On Ice Perspectives also does a fantastic job of making the viewer feel like they’re on the ice, too, and hopefully that also makes people want to lace on some skates!

I saw the Gold on Ice show in Leesburg. Had to invest 7 hours of driving to see a 2 hour show, but sooooo worth it! It was the kind of show you are talking about here, lots of local and up and coming skaters mixed in with their incredible line up of Ilia, Isabeau, Chock and Bates, and Stellato-Dudek. Ting Cui gave a heart meltingly beautiful tribute performance of East of Eden, including Michelle Kwan-like choreography with lots of spirals. I just about died of happiness. Lindsey Thorngren comes out as a surprise to me and did her phenomenal Windmills of Your Mind program, which one of my favorites of the season. All of this added to Ilia's Malaguena short and his new Hope program, Chock and Bates with a unique and beautiful exhibition piece, Stellato and Dudek wowing the crowd with lifts, spirals, and throw jumps, and Isabeau with a beautiful exhibition number to a Lana del Ray song about love and "soft ice cream." That lyric took me by surprise! Ilia did a few quads but honestly, in live performance they are difficult to tell from triples, he rotates so fast. After Ilia's first number, he introduced his little sister skating to a kitty cat number! Adorable. You are so write that seeing live skating is transformative. What Chock and Bates do is amazing in every way. Madison is such a big personality on tv, in person she is tiny but perfection itself in how she completes all their intricate lifts so fluidly. Ok, how can I forget Keegan, who was the only one beside Ilia to do TWO programs, and his spirals and moves are so fast and so big he really needs two ice rinks to complete them! He was flying around the ice, practically bursing out of the boards. His spins in person are at mind blowing speeds. He got huge audience recognition as did Donavan Carillo, it was of course a knowledgeable skating crowd. But...as reflective of the state of US skating and also the short notice given for the show, the small arena was not sold out, there were a lot of $100 seats empty as people mostly paid for the $49 seats that had a tall hockey barrier between them and the skaters. There was a large syncho group "Washington Theatre on Ice" that did two programs and I believe a lot of tickets were sold to their family and friends and they probably were included to build up ticket sales (there were very good and definitely contributed to the excellence of the show). Seriously, the only US show for the greatest technical skater of all time, newly crowned world champion, who trains in that area, should have sold out in minutes! I'm enjoying your podcast and wish you could have seen this show!

That's so awesome you were able to go! We really appreciate reading about your experience there! We'd heard Lindsey made a surprise performance (and we love that Windmills program), and we saw video of the Chock & Bates skate, which is mesmerizing. (We often think props are kinda cheesy, but they use that silk sheet work to beautiful dramatic effect.) The inclusion of Keegs and Donovan was pure genius. It's a shame that wasn't a sell-out show. We really don't understand pushing higher ticket prices, when it would be more valuable to sell tix cheap and get way more bodies in the arena. But also, there just needs to be more lead time to market these events.

I'd love a guide to warhorses! I enjoy classical music and opera, but I don't always understand the context of the storytelling of the pieces, the history of definitive skates that made each work of music so iconic in skating, and a refresher on which current skaters have done the best job of modernizing them. Who has the best Bolero, for instance? Would also love music recommendations: what war horses should Kaori, Ilia, etc. take on? thanks for this video 🙏🏾

That's a great idea for a deep dive! Wendy often knows the songs, composers, and skaters that have used those classical pieces. Adron is usually in the dark on those 😅

Where can I see the videos about Japan SOI and the social interactions between skaters?
@scoreography
@scoreography 2 месяца назад
We saw most of it on Instagram on the various skater accounts. Piper Gilles was particularly good about posting them. Unfortunately many of the photos and videos were in IG “stories” which usually only stay live for a day, unless the user puts them in a collection. The actual SOI insta still has a bunch in their posts, though.

Guys, I was looking for the skating videos from World's on NBC's RU-vid channel (because I wanted to show my brother Ilia's skate), and they're all deleted! It's so sad, we can't rewatch the Ilia Malinin video a million more times! There was a video from another channel of his free skate from Skate America, and that seems to be gone, too. (It wasn't a phone recording, I think it was from a Russian channel.) So sad that it's this way, I wish they would explain what's going on more. I know they have copyright issues, but I don't understand why, really. Seems it should be worked out and we should be able to watch the performances.

I hope the voice gets back to good soon! I am sad, too that we aren't getting Stars On Ice this year,. We went to Anaheim last year and saw it, after I saw it advertised during the US Nationals. (It was weird when they were trying to get sponsors for foster children - a great cause - but I felt like I was at a megachurch.) It did cost a bit, the tickets were reasonable but the gas and hotel added up. Even if we can't have Stars on Ice here, we should be able to pay to see it online in Japan, at least. ISU needs to wake up and make everything available to those who want to see it, and pay for it.
@melroc8566
@melroc8566 2 месяца назад
I've resorted to using a VPN to watch the ISU uploads. There is so much skating not available even for streaming in the US.
@scoreography
@scoreography 2 месяца назад
That is astonishingly stupid on NBC's part. Unlisting/deleting a wildly successful video with 3+ million views is both ludicrous and damaging to the sport. We've seen On Ice Perspectives talk about how they make almost no money on RU-vid despite getting huge views because the music copyright claims take the entirety of the advertising revenue. It's possible they have to license that footage longterm and the lost revenue makes that untenable? Or it's still just the fallout from the Heavy Young Heathens lawsuit? We'd like to get to the bottom of it, but it's likely a complicated legal mess wrapped up in NDAs.
@scoreography

@melroc8566 Yep, the US RU-vid has become a skating wasteland. It's probably all music royalty problems, and it's brutal.

Did NBC take down that viral video of Ilia’s free skate? I wanted to rewatch it recently and I noticed I can’t find it anymore. If they did take it down that’s really a shame as it was doing a great thing by spreading the word about how exciting figure skating is.

There was a rumor that there was no Stars On Ice in America this year because Nathan Chen wasn't available. Do you guys know anything about this?
@scoreography

We didn't hear that specifically. It would be pretty sad to scrap a whole tour because one (retired?) champion wasn't available, though. ☹️ Nathan is incredible, but when we saw the last US SOI tour, he wasn't even the most compelling performer.
