Nice going on the machine - especially since it’s not properly functioning and you’re teaching yourself ! The hem is great ! Next time , you can try this “trick “ I recall from machine knitting days . Two. Suggestions 1) when you get to the spot where you’d like to have the fold of the hem , do one row of purl stitches . If no ribber (second bed ) you can do it by hand fairly quickly using the transfer tool- or there’s a long comb that will remove all the stitches so you can flip them around ,knit a row and flip back to continue along ... this will form a beautiful crisp folded edge in the hem .try out on a small piece :)) easy once you’ve done it once “ Second- turn your tension ( gauge ) dial down by one for the inner part of the hem . This makes the hem not flair out from the extra bulk of hem . I learned a lot of techniques by machine knitting to apply to hand knitting, Interesting - yet not all like hand knitting,as you said 👍🏻

WHOA, what a prize you got from the quiz! Amazing! And totally agree with you about both the issue with naming sizes small, medium etc., and the problem with the sizes of Magnolia. Laine has an erratapage, so they could have fixed the sizes, but...Apparently not?

Eli, when you clean up your machine make sure to look under the plastic gears on the front. They tend to eat yarn, and it makes them tight and squeaky. The learning curve is pretty steep, but machines are a fun change! Good luck.

First things first: It's never to early to talk about Christmas! :D I can't wait to se your finished Skogafjall, it is such a lovely pattern. I know that you might not be looking for new ideas, and that you probably know about this one already but I think it would be so much fun to see you knit an Afmæli. You always have such excelent colourtaste! OOO, and you could make it into a kofte! Okey, I need to go cast on some lettlopi now. But just wanted to say thank you once again for such a great, honest and heartfelt podcast!

Thank you for another fun and lovely podcast. I love the beautiful red and gold yarn stash you acquired. It will be fantastic knit up. I can't wait for your Christmas mitten. My goal for the spring is to try to knit one of your mittens. I have never done color work and working up my skill levels to try one. Good luck on your PHD. It can be very daunting and of course consumes massive amounts of time and research. It will be done before you know it.

I have had a knitting machine since 1980. It is a Brother bulky. I use to make worsted weight 4 ply sweaters on it. I would knit the ribbing by hand then put that on the machine. It worked nice. gauge was close to using a us size 6 or 7 needle.

Oh my gosh, I got so happy when you showed the Skógafjall you started!! Also, I loved seeing your Hillesvåg haul - I recognized the blue skeins as pelsull right away (

I love the Skógafjall sweater it has been in my queue for ages, I even have the yarn set aside for it, some plum/burgundy for the main body with green and grey for the yoke

Your mittens have really taken off and for good reason! One of your patterns (sorry can’t remember which, Flora maybe) was worked up and on display at the Adirondack Wool & Arts Festival in upstate New York. It was in the Foster Sheep Farm booth with the wool from their farm. I was so excited to see it. Foster Sheep farm raises sheep that are Romney and Wensleydale cross. The farm has its own yarn made from wool from their sheep. They have their wool spun up nearby at Battenkill Mill. I have yet to venture up to both the farm and the mill, but they are on my to do list for a day trip this fall. The Yarn Shop at Foster Sheep Farm does a booth at Rhinebeck. You should look them up next time you come to NY Sheep & Wool Festival. Hang in there with the phd work. You’ve come so far. It will be worth it to finish. Just remember once it’s done you will have so much more time to knit!

The Danish company Ecouture fixed the sizing-kerfuffle: They named their sizes beautiful, gorgeous, fantastic and so on. Great idea, right?
@fibergarden
@fibergarden 5 лет назад
I also buy tights from a company which just alphabetised their sizes A-J. All of this is helpful. I don't even mind references to actual measurements as long as they aren't making a value judgement on my size :)

The mitten length adjustments sound great Ellie! I would super appreciate some extra length in the thumb charts if you're in the mood for charting! Apparently I have very long thumbs 🤔😂

Hi have you checked the sponge bar that’s a very common problem I machine knit. It sounds like the problem. They are going to need the bed to check it. Look out your manual and pull out the sponge bar if it’s sticky and has no spring you need a new one. Put some elastic through the ribbing of your marius neckline that will pull it in
@SkeindeerKnits
@SkeindeerKnits 5 лет назад
The sponge bar seems okay. Not 100% fresh but bouncy enough. Like, I wouldn't replace it any time soon.

I am interested to see your progress with your knitting machine. I used to do a lot of machine knitting but sold it a few years ago. You mentioned knitting cushions in your last podcast and the knitting machine would be great for that especially colour work. Definitely something wrong with the carriage and I think you should approach the seller but do persevere it. Was great to see you at Bergen knitting festival however briefly ( was going on the tour when I passed you ).

On my way to Bergen from Seattle next March. We will be arriving by train so it’s great to know of the shop at the train station. Also plan to visit Hillesvåg mill and shop. How long do you think we should plan to travel by bus and to complete our visit? We would like to visit early in the day before we board the Hurtrigreten at 4pm. Thank you for another fantastic podcast. Always very informative and enjoyable.

selv om jeg var på BSF sammen med deg, så synes jeg det er så fint å se klipp og høre om det, og ikke minst se garnet som ble kjøpt. blir ikke lei!

In my experience, knitting machines are tools of Aggravation anyway, but is there any chance you can use a plier to fix the bent parts of the carriage?

Hi Eli! I do have a question about a marius sweater. My best friend moved to Trondheim from the Netherlands about two years and he really wants a Marius sweater but with a zipper so it could hang open... Do you know of any Norwegian patterns for such a thing? If it's in Norwegian it's okay, I'm pretty good at knitting terms in Norwegian. I don't feel confident adapting a sweater pattern because of the colorwork. I want to give it to him from graduating from NTNU in hydromechanics and because he loves Norway so much he has decided to stay there and has gotten a job! Thanks in advance, also if you're too busy I completely understand!

Hi Eli - please can you help me?! I've just returned from Oslo with wool and a Norwegian Rauma knitting pattern that I have fallen in love with. However, my attempts to translate it into english are failing miserably and I wonder if you could please help me? I don't want to be defeated and you are clearly a Norwegian knitting pro! If you might be able to help me, I could pm you through your instagram. Jo
