What Paul the Apostle knew about Jesus is important if for no other reason than the dismantle poor arguments against the resurrection of Christ. This is a systematic look at what historical details Paul had about Jesus so that we can rule out the idea that Paul didn't know of a historical Jesus or that Paul was merely making things up as he went along.

When you study Paul's writings, its kinda weird to realize that he had to deal with Christian cults very similar to what we have today. He actually deals with most of the same false teachings with what is taught now including prosperity teachings and the groups that indulge in physical excess.

People really tripped me up with their accusations about Paul. It really hurt my spirit & walk with God, and before you knew it...I had stopped reading the New Testament. I didn’t want to learn about spiritual warfare or anything Paul taught (I actually really loved reading Paul’s letters before!) I even became afraid to say the name of Jesus. I started doubting Jesus & who He claimed to be! I had just began my walk with God back in July, and wasn’t strong enough to stand firm when the deceivers & accusers came. It took me a very long time to recover from it. I have been back into the NT since, doing all that I can to eat it all up. Sloppy! - the title of the vlog is "Paul Didn't Know Jesus" but you immediately launch into "Paul Didn't Know ABOUT Jesus". This is a completely different issue. Paul did not know Jesus (ie never met in the flesh) but he certainly knew about Jesus, and later even claimed to have seen him in some sort of vision. Paul's vision (or whatever it was - the Bible accounts differ in some detail) is the only first-hand account in the Bible of someone encountering the risen Jesus. The Gospels are at best 2nd-hand accounts - which is probably why they suffer from the usual coherency problems with reported events. Nevertheless, I do admire the energy and enthusiasm you devote to defending Christianity and trying to fit Biblical square pegs into round holes. Most pastors and preachers avoid the issues and opt for the easy life by just cherry-picking Bible verses that they know their followers want to hear.

@@334Emanuel You say Paul was in direct line with Jesus teachings but many of the the early Christian-Jew sects of the 1st and 2nd century (e.g. Ebionites, Gnostics etc) did not agree with Paul's interpretation of who Jesus was and his teachings. Paul even argued with James the Just (head of the Jerusalem church and Jesus brother) and Peter over various points of doctrine (eg Mosaic law, circumcision, faith vs works etc) . Paul seemed to spend most of his letter-writing doggedly trying to persuade the wider diaspora to adopt his version of Christianity and ignore the others. For a time Paul's teachings were considered heretical and it wasn't until the 3rd century that the Pauline version of Christianity started to dominate and gradually become reflected in which writings/gospels were selected to be included in the New Testament canon. The idea that there was one holistic, integrated Christian doctrine from the beginning is a fallacy.

Paul is a self proclaimed apostle with no named witnesses. There are 12 apostles according to Jesus listed in Matthew 19:28, not 13, the requirement to replace Judas Iscariot is listed in Acts 1:21-26 spoken of by Peter himself, after which they elected Mattias as the replacement of Judas. Jesus' apostles numbers 12 in total: this is also confirmed in the book of Revelation 21:12-14. Peter, the man who Jesus said "I will build my church upon this rock" to in Matthew 16:18, was the apostle to the gentiles listed in Acts 15:7, but Jesus said he would be taken captive in John 21:18, so then his church by proxy had been prophesied to have been taken captive.paul hijacked Peter's responsibility that the gentiles might hear from his lips and believe. Also the rest of the 10 remaining apostles (Judas was dead at the time, Mattias was not yet elected) they too were charged with going out to all nations (Translated from greek: "Ethnos" this means heathen, gentiles) to teach in the way of the Father/Son, Holy spirit and to obey everything jesus had commanded them to do, Matthew 28:18-20. James and the Elders and the other apostles also gave gentiles basic instructions - such as what is listed in Acts 21:18-28 (verse 25 specifically for the gentiles) where paul is called out for teaching apostasy contrary the things he should have taught indicated by in Acts 15:19-20 and Acts 21:25 about how the gentiles shouldn't bear the yoke of the Jews, but rather stick to certain laws... not "grace"(which is mercy) by paul's idea of faith alone, which goes about as far as acknowledging Jesus as you would Santa claus. paul was teaching the Jews who stayed among the gentiles to forsake Moses and even the EVERLASTING Covenant of circumcision described in Genesis 17:4-14... which if Jew neglected, they would be cut off from Abraham's blessing... cut off from a blessing from the God of the living: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. After paul was called out for teaching apostasy(lawlessness, do as thou wilt, let no man judge in you in any matter of food or drink and so on), he tried to 1 Cor 9:20-22 his way out of it (to the Jew he became a Jew to win the Jew etc...) by going through with what was known as a Nazarene vow, already discussed prior to this paragraph, listed in Acts 21:18-24. Rather than explain the law away like he usually did - calling it nailed to the cross indicated in Col 2:13-14(yet there are no reports of him being there at the crucifixion) calling the Law of God a "ministry of death" in 2 Corinthians 3:7 (when God's law are precepts which preserve our life according to King David in Psalm 119:93), rather than declaring that he and anyone else "in christ" was dead to the law by his own arbitrary means and arbitrary gospel of grace (mercy) through faith alone listed in Romans 7:4, Galatians 2:19 - Rather than all of these things, paul was found trying to complete this vow by the Jews who knew he was teaching apostasy before he was able to complete it, 6 days into the ritual. He was rightfully thrown out and found himself standing before the courts for teaching apostasy, lawlessness, a crime punishible by death. He has no named witnesses to his conversion stories, his conversion stories do not line up, there's translator bias surrounding his text and even in 2 Peter where it is deceptively translated in english to make paul seem like too much of a genius to understand, when in reality Peter called his writings "dys-noetas" meaning to destroy understanding - which others would take and twist to their own destruction, like constantine in 324 AD when he used paul's lawless gospel to cause people to disregard the sabbath and worship his sun god on sunday. the paul we read about in the bible, who takes up more than half of the new testament, is an anti-christ Jesus prophesied would come in his name, performing signs and miracles even to fool the elect if possible: According to paul the sign of a true apostle is in signs and wonders or 2 cor 12:12, but according to Jesus, these are the sign of a deceiver, or Matthew 24:24, and he said not to believe the person who said they saw Jesus in the wilderness like paul had in Matthew 24:26. paul taught no parable, quotes nothing Jesus said(other than take this cup and drink, last supper), and Jesus himself never taught "grace" through faith but rather obedience for grace, and to build upon his teaching or else build upon sand (matthew 7:24-27), that the law wasn't over until heaven and earth disappeared and to exceed the righteousness of the scribes and pharisees in order to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven(matthew 5:17-20) and that in the end, everyone is judged by their faith as well as their works (Revelation chapter 2 to 3, also in the final judgement - Revelation 21:8, 22:12.) Jesus said that the only way through to the Father is through the son and whoever doesn't gather with him only scatters. Ask Jesus how to be saved and you'll see that you must do the will of his Father in heaven. In order to do that you must worship him as he desires, by the power of his spirit or John 4:23-24, in order to obtain what is necessary to worship God is John 14:15-17. AND NO WE ARE NOT SAVED BY OUR OWN WORKS - there is only one who is good. Good deeds can only come from the holy spirit. We are saved by doing the work of the Father, or by doing the will of the Father, or as Jesus so adequately put it - his mother sister and brother are those who do the will of his Father in heaven or Matthew 12:49-50. If one wants to be saved, simply become family. If you want to inherit eternal life, look no further than Matthew 19:16-19, or God's law, precepts which preserve our lives as King David would say(Psalm 119:93). Blessings

In Acts chapter 8 the gospel spread to the Samaritans (who were ethnically mixed Jews-Gentiles), and many Samaritans received Jesus Christ as Savior. In Acts chapter 10, the apostle Peter was the first to take the gospel specifically to the Gentiles, and many received Christ as Savior. In Acts chapters 13-14, Paul and Barnabas had a very fruitful ministry among the Gentiles. All of these Gentiles turning to faith in Christ caused concern among the Jewish believers, first expressed in Acts 11:1-18, and the issues that caused concern were ultimately decided upon at the Jerusalem Council (Acts 15). The issues centered on two questions: Do Gentiles first have to become Jews before they can become Christians? Do Gentiles have to observe the Mosaic Law after they become Christians? The impetus for the Jerusalem Council is given in Acts 15, verses 1 and 5, “But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, ‘Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.’ . . . It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the Law of Moses.” Some Jewish Christians were teaching that Gentiles had to observe the Mosaic Law and Jewish customs in order to be saved. Since this teaching clearly contradicted the fact that salvation was by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone (Acts 15:11), the apostles and church leaders held the first Christian council to settle the issue. In verses 7-11, the apostle Peter spoke of his ministry with the Gentiles, as recorded in Acts chapter 10. Peter focused on the fact that the Holy Spirit was given to uncircumcised Gentiles in precisely the same manner the Holy Spirit was given to the apostles and Jewish believers on the day of Pentecost. This led Peter to the conclusion that there should be no “placing a yoke on the neck of the [Gentile] disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear” (Acts 15:10). Jesus’ half-brother James, who had become a leader of the church in Jerusalem, agreed with Peter and declared, “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God” (Acts 15:19). The Jerusalem Council then proceeded to give four “rules” that Gentile Christians should live by. These were not rules the Gentiles must follow in order to be saved. Rather, the rules were to build harmony between Jewish and Gentile Christians in the first century. The four rules the Jerusalem Council decided upon were that Gentile Christians should abstain from food polluted by idols, sexual immorality, the meat of strangled animals, and blood. The instructions were not intended to guarantee salvation but to promote peace within the early church. It is interesting that the issue the Jerusalem Council was dealing with is still very much an issue in the church today. There are groups still teaching that Christians must obey the Old Testament Law. Whether it is the Sabbath day or the food laws or all of the Old Testament Law outside of the sacrificial system-there are groups that declare observance of the Law is either required for salvation or at least a crucially important aspect of the Christian life. Sadly, these groups either completely ignore or grossly misinterpret the decision of the Jerusalem Council. The specific goal of the Jerusalem Council was to decide what aspects, if any, of the Old Testament Law Christians must observe. The Jerusalem Council, for the sake of melding the Jewish and Gentile cultures within the Antioch church, said that the Gentiles should eschew their former pagan practices associated with idolatry. There was no mention of the Sabbath whatsoever. Further, the Jerusalem Council made it abundantly clear that these rules were not requirements for salvation by reaffirming that salvation is by grace for both Jews and Gentiles (Acts 15:11). How many arguments would be solved if the church today would simply follow the principle set by the Jerusalem Council-limit your liberty for the sake of love?

If paul met Jesus after ascension. He didn’t meet “Jesus”. Jesus said his second coming would not be private. If it’s in a vision, ok. But he said he saw Him standing next to him. If the Father delivered a message that was given to Jesus, then Jesus passed the vision onto an angel to hand deliver to John how is it that with Paul the same rules don’t apply?

Like Jesus says you must die to your life, and pick up your cross and follow Him. Just always point to Jesus and the Word. It sounds like you are on the right road. Read Genesis chapters 9, 10, 11. Notice the command to Noah and family. Then what happened in chapter 11. The people wanted to make a name for themselves. Jesus gave similar command in Matt 28, go into the world and make disciples teaching all I have taught you. Notice Jesus didn't say build physical churches and collect monies from peoples for their teachings. Tower of Babel is the equivalent to men building religions. Blessings in Christ.

Bankhead 1 there’s a difference between getting rich off of, and being taken care of. Bankhead 1 I think that’s debatable, we see the early church did give (and give extravagantly in some cases like selling land) to support the gospel. I think the hard rule of a tenth shouldn’t apply, but the giving of our first fruits (off the top of the budget) is a good takeaway practice. All that said I do struggle with giving and really wish to do better, I think a lot of giving issues is a trust and security thing. Hopefully I can grow in this area as time goes on.

Mike, I'm normally a big fan of your stuff, but I was quite surprised to see you use the end of Mark 7:19 as evidence -- with, I could see, the little letter indicating a footnote (which of course says this little addendum was probably not original to Mark) right there on your screen! Now certainly you may take the minority position that it was original (a position I would argue against, knowing some Koine Greek and some textual criticism -- and maybe more importantly, having read some on this passage by those who know both subjects better than I!), but it just seems frankly really flimsy and even irresponsible to cite it as evidence without even noting that this passage is highly debatable. By the way, I'm not arguing that the correct interpretation is debatable -- we actually agree on that! -- only that the text is debatable in how strongly it states that interpretation (ie, long story short, I agree with the commentator who added the addendum that Jesus was in effect declaring all foods clean -- I just don't agree that that commentator was Mark!) To overstate a case or state it with flimsy evidence makes it seem weaker than it actually is, bc it sets you up for attack -- and worse, in this and any similar cases, I think you're setting up Christians who have never heard of textual variants to be both destroyed verbally and even led into doubt of their own faith (I speak from personal experience ;/). Could you reconsider using passages with textual variants as evidence?

@daviddub 10 месяцев назад
@yochanan5506 if Nathanael truly knew the Son of God, it was not by meeting him. You will see that the Arm of the Lord, which you can see in Isaiah 53:1+ is a prophetic term for the Christ, the Son of God, is revealed. You will see also that Jesus told Simon son of Jonah (called Peter) that flesh and blood did not reveal to Peter that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God Matthew 16:16-17, but the Father, which is in heaven, revealed it. And again, in John 12: 37-38 they did not truly believe, and truly know Him because of the miracles: that the prophecy might be fulfilled, referring to that Isaiah 53 reference I gave you above, "to whom hath the Arm of the Lord been revealed." So, you have 3 scripture references that Jesus is not known, not truly known, by flesh and blood. This is out of Jesus's own mouth in the Matthew and John references, and of the prophet Isaiah. But also, reason must demand that the Christ, the Son of God, is a spiritual reality, not a natural one. As it's written, the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit. How could they possibly know by mere natural means what he was spiritually (Christ, and Son of God)? He didn't tell them so at such a time.

Paul's teachings were confusing, he infuriated the Jerusalem church and minimised the importance of the Torah for Jews. I can understand why he did this as he was an ancient "lefty" trying to bring Jews and non Jews together but ultimately opened the door for Torah hating gentiles to enter the church and bring in gentile anti semitism.

His appraisal of Paul's accomplishment in developing doctrine and the Gospel message as a unified project (one of universal, transnational, transhistorical, transtemporal import) made me take a closer look at Paul the apostle and theologian and eventually martyr and made Christianity a viable path to me again. All it takes is one altered perspective, and a lifetime of handwaving and negativity can be tipped aside and the floodgates open. We expect Mormons to question Joseph Smith's visions and we expect Muslims to question Muhammad's visions, so I think as Christians we should rightly question Paul's visions. I just find it surprising more scholars aren't doing this and most people that are proponents of Paul being a false apostle all over the place with their other views. If Paul is an author of confusion removing his writings should bring clarity, but it seems to bring more confusion.

Paul was a character composed by the Gnostic Marcion in the first canon of the new testament. The original person who many did quote in the first century is Simon the Magus, the father of all heretics. Even Tertullian said that Paul is the Apostle of the Heretics.

Mike, nice exegesis of Romans 14:14… Paul contradicts what Jesus says & by saying that Paul has some special insight from a man he never walked with is common in Christianity. Paul is not the author & finisher of my faith. Jesus Christ died for me & as such I choose to follow what HE said. I am grieved how easily Christians follow the teachings of others, especially when they directly contradict what Christ said. True saints of God will be persecuted in these last days, so seek discernment as to not lose your salvation 🙏

Without Paul, there is no Body of Christ, the coming together of all people, Jew and Gentile, and this knowledge of the “mystery” that he received by revelation directly from Jesus. As Paul says, he is the “pattern”, that all now come individually to God by faith through grace, not of any works; not based on heredity or generational blessings as it once was through Israel. There is now “one new man”, a new creation. The 12 apostles were ministers to the Jews. Paul is the apostle to the gentiles (Galations 2). Without Paul, there is only the Gospel of the Kingdom, that which includes ONLY JEWS under the Law. Gentiles were excluded from the promises that came through the Jews. There is no CHURCH or Body of Christ without Paul!! He is OUR APOSTLE.

@@daviddub I'm not trying to be argumentative but isn't there a possibility that Paul got all of this information from someone telling him in passing what Jesus had said maybe one of the apostles told people what happened at the last supper? I just think there's other ways that Paul could have gotten this information without getting it directly from Jesus. Not to mention Paul was literally trying to destroy Christianity before. Who is the false apostle spoken about to John in Revelation about the church in Ephesus? Who else went to Ephesus calling themselves an apostle other than Paul? Wasn't Paul turned away by the Ephesians? Didn't the holy Spirit forbid him not to go to Asia and he went anyway? I'm not a Bible scholar and I don't know anything about this I just really need some help as a Christian because it all seems awfully odd. Like why did Paul lie to people to get them to come to Christ, that doesn't seem right. Why did Paul treat the other apostles like they didn't matter saying stuff like he didn't care what they were appointed for and that he didn't need anything from them. What about the 12 tribes of Israel how does that work? Wouldn't Paul be the thirteenth apostle if you add in Mathias? Please help me because I'm lost. You destroy your own arguement when you admit Paul wrote before the gospels were written. This was my entire point. Paul never heard Jesus teach anything. The vast majority of what he knew of Jesus was all based on hearsay. THe rest is on a vision of his. While hearsay can be reliable, it isn't always. You spend much time talking about what Paul thought about Jesus based on what he heard from people who believed in Jesus. But this doesn't show that Paul knew Jesus, just that he knew what people were saying about Jesus. Thus he is creating a theology based almost entirely on hearsay.

I cannot believe that this teaching that Paul was not a real apostle is spreading among so called Christians. An apostle is a more than a mere eyewitness of Jesus, he is also a witness of the divine sonship and redemptive mission of Jesus Christ. An apostle speaks the message or messages the Lord gives him and leads people to Christ. Paul had a vision of the Lord on the way to Damascus, repented of his sins and was converted, later on in another vision he was taken in what he calls the third heaven and saw and heard things he was forbidden to speak of. He received revelations from God all the rest of his life and worked tirelessly to bring both Jews and Gentiles to Christ. We only have fragmentary information on his life and we don't know exactly when he was called to the apostlehip, but called he was, the other apostles never disputed his right to be called so and to minister as such. So who are you to say differently. As for his supposed misquotes of the Old Testament, the Jews of Jesus times had access to other ancient records that did not reach us, as a matter of fact Jesus on occasion quoted scripture differently from what we have today so was he also lying? Some so called Christians believe that Paul, not Jesus organized a church, but a careful and prayerful examination of the Gospels, the book of Acts and the letters of the other apostles paint a different picture. Jesus did organize a church, not Paul or Peter or James or John, they were only his servants in the church. When Jesus organized his church it was perfect, but them after he went to heaven and the apostles were killed or died naturally, unholy men under Satan's influence hijacked it and turned into something not of God. Paul was not the founder of Christianity, Jesus founded it as he saw fit. Going back to Paul, if you don't like or understand his teachings and you dont think they are from God, instead of relying on scholars and experts and enemies of Christ, get on your knees and ask the Supreme Scholar and the Ultimate Expert to enlighten you and reveal to you what you wish to know or understand. You love to talk about a personal Savior then put your knees where your mouth is.

Because no one but Paul claimed Paul met Yeshua, also because most preachers and Pastors purposely ignore Acts chapters 21 through 24 because they incriminate Paul and destroy his gospel. The reason you will hear preachers say "Paul said" more than "Jesus said" is because Paul contradicts the teachings of of Jesus, so they say, "we teach more from Paul because he was sent to the Gentiles" Then they will teach about the things Paul said in accordance with Yeshua but they will not teach the parts that contradict in order to save faith and face. So I suggest we all read what Yeshua said about anyone who claims to have met Him in the desert in secret, and why He said "because you have been with me" We all must read and understand Acts 21 through 24 and what it really says was going on. And we must study the Church of Ephesus (Ephesians/Asia) and why The Almighty congratulates the jews of Ephesus for calling out false apostles and placing them on trial, and why He would tell those Christian converts from Ephesus to return to their first love (Torah/Tanakh), and do the "First Works" unless He turn against them. If we ignore this evidence in the bible it makes us no better than any other cult practice. An apostle is one who walked with Yeshua and was chosen to go. Only disciples who walked with Him for the 3.5 years and were taught personally are apostles. The 12 apostles represented the future chosen 10th that will be chosen from the 12 tribes according to Isaiah 6. A 13th apostle does not line up with scripture or prophecy, nor was he personally chosen by Yeshua during His 3.5 years of His Ministry in the flesh. Paul "Self Appointed" himself and admitted to lying in order to save "some." Yeshua never taught His apostles to lie to convert anyone. Infact He promoted Isaiah 6 which is the very reason He spoke in parables as not to lie and to only call those who were chosen. Paul said "To the poor I became poor, to the rich I was rich, to those with Torah I became as one under Torah, and to those without the Torah/Nomis I became as one not under Torah/Nomis (except the Torah of Yeshua?), I BECAME ALL THINGS TO ALL MEN that I might obtain SOME. That is not even close to what Yeshua or the 12 apostle taught. We do not attract pagans by pretending to be pagan. We do not attract worldly people by pretending to be worldly. That's what prosperity preachers do. If you here a preacher teach more from Paul's epistles than from the very words of our Creator in the flesh it is a red flag 🚩 that most ignore.

@AnHebrewChild

Actually, you raise a good point. We should not believe any prophet just because he says "thus saith the Lord." Jeremiah 14:15 concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed. Jeremiah 23:21 I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. Jeremiah 23:32 Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD. Jeremiah 29:9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD. The Scriptures provide us ways to test / to prove whether a prophets words are from the Lord. Deut18 And if thou say in thine heart, *How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?* When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. AND If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder AND the sign or the wonder *come to pass,* whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him. And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. Balaam spoke true prophecies which have come to pass (Num24) but Balaam cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel teaching them to commit fornication and eat meats sacrificed to idols. (read Rev2:14) Though Balaam performed signs and wonders and his prophecies came to pass, yet he instructed the people in a way that the Lord had not commanded them. _ fulfillment of prophecy AND right doctrine If he fails either of these, he fails. And there are other tests.

@@BrockJamesStory what's your point? Are you discounting those tests? Or suggesting they logically have no purpose? That seems odd. If you actually think about this, these tests aren't circular reasoning at all, since affixed to these tests are both doctrine / commandments & prophecies. (Things which themselves are subsumed under the tests). I mentioned other tests. "By the mouth of two witnesses, or three, shall every word be established" is another one. There are more. If you want to actually take God's word seriously, you'll have to engage your mind: a thing God calls you to do.(Mat22:37 & Mrk12:30) But... as a man once said, "If thou art, as many in this pretending age, a sign or title gazer, and comest into books as Cato into the theatre, to go out again, - thou hast had thy entertainment; farewell."

Whether any or all or none of those books are inspired is a different discussion. The point is, that the question here is: what is the word that the Lord has spoken? How to identify it? By tradition of men? Or by the tests which God gives us. You've been shown three so far. Be blessed.

If Jesus' response amounts to "yes, pay your taxes," then it isn't a clever response at all. It is clever because it sounds like he is saying to pay the tax, but he says give to Cesaer what is his (nothing) and give to God what is His (everything). The religious leaders could not argue against this teaching, and they couldn't convince the Romans he was saying not to pay taxes because to their minds the taxes belong to Cesaer which they heard Jesus say.

I agree. This is so OFTEN misinterpreted by clergy. Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians... "Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not? Should we give or should we not give?" "Show me the tribute money," the Son of God tells them. They show him a coin. There's an image graven on it. Inscribed beside the image is a title. The image is of a man (a guy named Augustus). The coin's superscription in Latin reads, Filii Dei, 'the Son of God' "Who does this image belong to? And who does this title belong to?" This was not a question they had prepped for, and they fall into their own trap. And so in the audience of all the people, they answer, "they belong to Caesar" (They say that both the image and the title 'Son of God' belong to Caesar.) In light of this, the true Son of God says: "Give, therefore (by your reasoning), to Caesar all those things which (which you deem) belong to Caesar. And give to to God those things which belong to God" They now stand there holding a coin: mouths closed. With their own question thrown back at them in an astonishing way. As you put it, he managed to clearly answer the question showing both their hypocrisy and idolatry (and revealed the thoughts of their minds) AS WELL AS throw it back at them in a way that ensnared them in their own net. (Psa141:10) Mat22:22 > When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
