In this episode I have an in-depth conversation with Chris Staub who was recruited by HH Catamarans specifically to commission the electrical system on our yacht, the HH 88. Chris discusses his diverse background and shares his deep knowledge of the systems on the yacht making for a very interesting chat. Sit back and enjoy!

Sad to see New Zealand boat building fall to the wayside but fantastic to see Kiwi boating/sailing skills still alive & well around the world

What size inverters do you have onboard? Everything has to be scaled for peak RMS eventhough the running amperage is quite a bit lower. When a refrigerator compressor kicks in there is an amperage spike then it settles down quickly to its running consumption level. Curious do marine electronics and cabling have special shielding to prevent erosion from the salty air? I like how they have basically created a mini-subpanel in every room in order to build out at a later date, that's smart. You really have thought out this vessel very well. Earlier videos talking about carbon fiber reducing flex and less maintenance over the long haul. Interesting learning about all these approaches.

Thank you for your comment, unfortunately I cannot share some if the intricate details yet. In general, yes there is specific wiring for marine use. A lot of this boils down to the "certifying body". For us it is RINA. They specify a lot of the individual materials to use.

@@sketchtosea3750 If your solar array is capable of 7.3kw's and on a full sunny day you can gain as much as 150amps to supply the lithium battery pack I wanted to know what the overall power draw on your vessel is and the size of the inverters you chose or listed on the Spec Sheet? One inverter, two or a series of micro-inverters??? I'm impressed with every aspect of your build and you have been so detail oriented that I thought that this was a good question. I was really impressed with your whole discussion about flex and the long term maintenance avoidance, that was really thinking outside of the box. Most people fall victim to those hangups down the road. Inverter Selection is another potential bank-buster ( for me) 5-7 yrs nearing the life of the inverter. Your vessel is so cleverly thought out and I find your Sketch to Sea Project fascinating.

Love your videos. I have a question about your solar panels. I have seen many debates about the pluses and minuses of having the panels stuck to the roof tops and not having the them raised to allow for easy replacement and allow airflow around to help increase the panel efficiency. Have you or Chris have any thoughts or discussions on this?

Hi Daniel, thank you for the comment. In a perfect world I would have preferred to install them using the method that you mentioned. Unfortunately, the areas where we were able to place the panels are working areas. We need to be able to walk around and access these points so we were left with no other choice. That being said, the difference is marginal, and really boils down to the actual cell that is being used in the panel and if there is an "optimizer" controlling the panel itself.

Since I heard Yacht Controller mentioned, I guess you have (or will) install that. What made you choose this product against DockMate, experience or recommendations?

Hi Benny, thank you for the comment. Yes it was actually both a recommendation and personal experience.

I have one of those lightning devices on my boat, but from a different company. They even gave me a direct lightning strike warranty that will pay up to $100k. Cheap insurance.

@sketchtosea3750 it's been 18 months but the problem is there's no way to know. Did it work, or am I lucky? None of my friends got hit either and have no lightning protection. But the warranty to pay for any damage does make me feel good.

Have you power generation through your props rotating when you are under sail? I think I got it right I'm not a yacht expert.

Thank you for the comment. Unfortunately not, when we were in the design phase of this build there were not hybrid systems big enough for our vessel. With the 88 being the first model in its range, I didn't want to be testing any more new and unproven technology.
