I remember his artwork from the film " Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines ", when I was a kid in the cinema in 1965.

You’ve probably seen it before, but Picasso’s “the artist and his model 180 drawings” is another fascinating book. Plus the movie! The mystery of picasso!

Searle's work is (to my mind) very calligraphic. He is not just drawing. He is writing. His work is two dimensional writing (as opposed to one). There is in his work the balance of white space and black space that one sees in written text on a page. You could call it the diametric opposite of photography, in *that* sense. It is WRITING.

😍 this style reminds me of my youth. Sure other illustrators copied that style, or it was 'in fashion ' back then. Anyway I love it !

Ben Shahn. Don't forget Ben Shahn. He has the same calligraphic, anti-photographic quality. Writing. The time component is very important. And MUSIC! This kind of drawing has the time component of music!
