I have been a fan of Steinberg since the late '70s when I discovered his work in a graphic design magazine, which lead me to acquire a couple of books of his work, including The Passport. I also have a poster of his in my house (for a music festival). Like you, I have been guilty of borrowing his ideas and approach in my own illustrations and cartoons. It's hard to resist his influence. His stuff is so amazingly simple and clever. It makes me wonder who influenced Steinberg. Picasso and Matisse, for sure.
i just visited the Art museum at Indiana university and they had a room of Steinberg's i came back the next day to bask in his work. it's deeply fascinating. and so inspiring.
I never heard of Saul but thanks to you, Danny, I now love him. The books are ingenious and i always feel....why didn't I think of that?...like the thumbprint doodles the mix of simple characters holding stamped images from rubber stamps. ingenious/original/whimsical/serious/real/. Thanks.
Im pretty new to this channel, and recently I have discovered this series, love it! I feel inspired after you beautifully show the viewer the book, and point the stuff out that could be left unnoticed, I want almost every art book I have seen here! My dream would be to see your bookshelf because it must be massive
I've come to Sketchbook Club late but have finally gotten caught up. Danny, thank you so much for doing this. These videos are spectacular. Hope they continue.
I've had books by Steinberg, Hogarth, Blackstock, and Beard on my shelves for many years, but never encountered anyone else that knew these guys. Sketchbook Club is like having that art pal I always wanted... thanks.
I grew up in NY, and the first poster I bought as a pre teen was Steinberg's New Yorker cover. It followed me to college in VA and was a frequent conversation starter. Thanks for sharing his sketches. They do make me want to try some new things and steal!
Incredible imagination transformed into images that intrigue,a kind of silent protest in many ways, thank you for bringing these to our attention,in the past I have seen many books like this but never bothered with them but now I will pay more attention to the works of art within.
I've just pulled out my three ancient Steinberg books that I used to leaf through as a child. To my mind, The Labyrinth contains the peachiest of his humour, his wit and his drawing skills. They combine to evoke deeper messages beyond whatever it is that makes you chuckle. What a gifted man and how jealous we must all be of his rich imagination!
Danny, Recently stumbled across these videos of yours and am absolutely loving them! I'm an aspiring illustrator myself and enjoy being introduced to artists I've either never heard of or whose work I have never looked too closely into. However, I've noticed something that I cannot get out of my head for the life of me. Has anyone ever told you that you look exactly like Paulie Walnuts from The Sopranos? It just came to me earlier today and I had to let you know. Anyways, keep up the great videos!
Love these Sketchbook Club videos. So informative, like my fav part of art school, when the instructors introduced new artists to the group with slides. Thanks!
