Justin, thanks very much for this video. I have been struggling and frustrated when watching a "help video", not knowing if the tools shown worked on the free version. I was thinking the free version was very crippled. I was wrong, there is a lot of functionality in the free version and I couldn't find it. Thanks for this primer.

Hi Guys, You can create scenes in the web version. It's on the right hand side toolbar under the clapper board icon. But maybe on the Sketchup "Shop" version

I have no idea why i watched this video but it was well worth it Justin. Good presentation and I love the way you choose your words. For the choice I would choose the free pro version 2017 because it is a very great choice and totally free. I did buy the pro 2018 version though and I'm very happy with this. For the online free version I think it's not enough and just a teaser to by one of the two payed versions. I do find it simpatic (is this a word?) that Trimble brought out this "in between" version. Greats on the Netherlands!

LOL - I've done that with videos as well. I think with the level of modeling you do, Pro is the best suited for your needs. I'm surprised the "In Between" version was online, but it kind of makes sense. They can avoid a ton of software and hardware issues by keeping it online - I'm just hopeful they always have a desktop version available. Thanks Willem!

Great. You answered some questions I had. Does the 2017 version expire in 30 days? Mine says I have 20 days left. Maybe it just limits it some way? I started to use the online version because I thought it would force me to use it anyway after the 2017 Make version expired. I prefer the desktop version if it will continue to work after the trial period.

Thanks for the video Justin. What is printing like in Web SU and are your designs secure when saved to Trimble? Can you save to your local hard drive?

Honestly I don't know about the printing - I've never actually printed out of the web version. My understanding is that you can export your models to a .skp file that can be saved on your hard drive. Thanks!

Sketchup as a desktop application appears to be exceptionally good software. But I'm a linux guy. So I tried the 14 trial for Sketchup Shop, so I could use the browser. It's OK but I ended up deciding on Blender, which does run as a native binary on Linux. I'm having a difficult time cancelling the trial period. They don't make it easy.

Groups and Tags (used to be called layers) all there but you can't organise them in the same way.

I know this is an old video, but it’s still very helpful. I’m a woodworker, and I’m slowly getting the hang of designing projects with the free version. The one thing I haven’t figured out yet is how to hinge doors and lids, etc. If anyone knows that reads this, I would surely appreciate instructions on how to do it, (if it’s even available in the free version. If not, then I’ll just have to upgrade. Thanks!

I don't have any more knowledge of SketchUp's future plans than anyone else, so I really couldn't say. You could probably do something like this with 2017 Make if you used the right extensions. Thanks!

Hey brother thanks for the great videos! I am starting a speaker design and manufacture company out of my home wood shop. I will only be building speakers one set at a time and there are 12 separate speakers in my companies line. Do you think that SketchUp shop would be good enough or do you think I would need to purchase the $700 SketchUp package and just start out right?

Hmmm...I think from a licensing standpoint, if you're using this for commercial use, you're supposed to use the Pro version. Honestly though, licensing issues aside, I think you're going to be more happy with the Pro version anyway (more features, etc). I'd recommend downloading the free make version from SketchUp's website and giving it a test drive just to make sure, but I really think you'll be happier with the full on desktop version. Hopefully this helped!

Interesting to see the differences as someone who's been using the free but wants to subscribe to get more features. Can the Pro version be installed on 2 machines though, desktop and laptop for on the road?

Notice that the Free version does *not* show you any Tool shortcuts (R, Q, etc.), so you may want to print out a cheat sheet keyboard template when first getting started.

I still am cranky that they stopped the sketchup make line. I have been using sketchup since google su 8. I am not using sketchup to make a living so it's not worth it to me to buy pro or this new shop thing (yes, I checked out the pricing). I have 2017 Make (the last free one) but in time, it will no longer be supported.

I understand your feelings on this - I think at the end of the day, keeping up with a free desktop version might have been a significant resource drain - now they can consolidate the free users into a web based version that's much easier to keep up to date (this is all a guess on my part). That said, if they can figure out a way to incorporate extensions back into the online version, I think it might become a lot more interesting, but I guess we'll have to wait and see! Thanks!

I respectfully disagree. The free version is the same as pro w/ a few features disabled. That takes minimal resources compared to doing something new on a completely new platform (web based).

Me personally, I think we are all fortunate to have such a powerful free version for as long as we had it (and Make 2017 is still available). I think the features of SketchUp Free are good for a free version. SketchUp Shop adds a lot of valuable features for makers, but due to the annual fee, after three or four years the Pro version is a better option.

Thanks for the feedback Jeff - I agree, I think a lot of people kind of took that for granted, and I think there was a lot of license abuse going on as well. I'm interested to see where this goes, but as long as I have a desktop version, I'll keep working with that. Thanks!

If I was a full time user of Sketchup I would not have a problem with the subscription price for "shop" or "Pro". However like many generalists I may use it intensively a couple of times a year at most. Kind of wish they broke it down further to say a half year or quarter subscription. I understand it would cost more but I would be happy to pay say $100 for a quarter for Sketchup Pro.

I am retired and one of my hobbies is building and flying RC aircraft models out of 1/4" foam. One of the flyers in Australia is using Sketchup to produce plans of different aircraft. I purchased one of his plans and was amazed that if cut out carefully from the foam everything fit exactly. Since I did a some AutoCAD drawings several years ago, the idea of learning and using Sketchup to draw and then unfold a design was a attractive idea. After viewing a few of your videos ( very good job on the videos! ) I have decided that maybe I will download the make version. 1.Will the Sketchup make version export drawing in .pdf so I can print them out? 2. Will the Sketchup make version unfold the solid object so I can cut the sections out of foam and put back together? Thanks for producing such informative and useful videos! Ray

what's going on sir, I just watched your video and I use sketch all the time for my woodworking business and I finally purchased the "shop" version thinking that I would be able to use the "cutlits" extensions but finding out that I can't. It's very frustrating plus I don't see any difference from the free version and the shop version. My question is, am i missing something with the shop version, or is there a way that I'm not seeing to use the extensions, or do the extensions only come with the desktop version? Sorry I know that was a lot but any help in knowledge will be helpful.

I could have used this Video a Month Ago!!! I can say that I have had 2 issues with my Purchased SketchUp Pro 2018' in the short time I have been using it. The Select Tool was not working properly which after contacting Support, they fixed very quickly and my Materials Tray did not Pop up when I selected the Paint Bucket, I noticed recently and somehow it's in a Default Tray now....But selecting from Tool to Tool is kind of Sluggish still. Anyway Thanks for the Video!

Hi. I am having the most difficult time trying to understand the requirements on my Hardware to run SketchUp without it being too dang slow and frustrating. But I don't have a lot of money to have a high-end graphics card either. What is the cheapest run of computer or laptop model I can get to adequately run SketchUp and is there a difference in the requirements whether I am using SketchUp Pro or the web version

@@Thesketchupessentials I have yes. It took a while to find that the spec requirements for the web app are the same as the pro version. I do a lot of deck building and remodeling work and was hoping to purchase a laptop budget friendly enough for me to use on site or at home. Doesn't seem I can do it for less than 700. I'm more of a 400 dollar kinda guy. Hardly got that. Lol. Btw...love your videos, it's as good as any "official" school. Great thorough tutorials Broskie.

Free is not free as soon as it’s linked to the web, and the shop one is annoying cause it’s subscription so the only good one for me is pro and I think even sketchup effected by the subscription policy which I personally hate. For me and a lot of people we love to own the things that we can design and work with, own it by baying for it and have it locally on our own hardware no need for connecting or renting

I think this is a fair point, though my understanding is that you can export your models to the 3D warehouse and download them at any point. There's definitely a reduction in control and access when things go web-based though. Thanks for the comment!

Thank you for your video. I've been working with SketchUp Make2017 desktop version for a few weeks now. I saved a make file that I was working on at home, emailed it to myself, then opened the file on my work computer which also has SketchUp Make 2017 desktop version, but I noticed that all of my layers were locked. I couldn't hide and unhide my different layers. Any experience with this behavior? I'm assuming the Make version has limited this functionality so that you can only work with it alone on one computer and not collaborate with anybody.

What I'd love to figure out is WHY the Free version chronically makes my model disappear as I walk toward it or sometimes as I zoom in. Almost like it's being shredded/sliced by an invisible window (looks like a cut section). Only changing views brings it back. Super frustrating, clearly a bug. This is in Chrome for Windows, btw. Dunno who else has experienced this annoyance!

This is known as the clipping plane issue - usually caused by objects being very far away from the model origin - forums.sketchup.com/t/viewport-clipping-issues/45157/15

SketchUp no longer imports Google Map data - if you want map data, you're going to need the pro version

They're pushing the Pro version as subscription now for $299/year. You can still buy a non-subscription classic license for $695 but they're really pushing for the subscription model. I guess they thought that after getting people hooked on the old Make line, they'd be able to parlay a bunch of those users into Pro subscribers. I wonder how that's working out for them?

There is no menu for importing plans to sketchup web. you have to pay $119 to get some essentials things. So, Because i'm a hobbyist i stick to pencil and paper because the learning curve for this is wasting my time and $$ when i could be building my projects!

I had a feeling that Google selling SketchUp to Trimble was going to be bad for SketchUp. It's sad that Trimble can't afford (I'm assuming) to keep SketchUp Make free. I miss SketchUp Make already...

im trying to use sketchup as an architecture student. I use rhino 5 currently but i find it very annoying, can sketchup make complex organic shapes? if so is this in the free version or the pro version?

Depends on the shape really - it's difficult to answer this question without more info on what you're trying to do, but generally for more advanced modeling applications, you're going to want to use extensions, meaning you're going to want the desktop version, not the online version

there's a new "Sketchup Studio" version now that costs a whopping $1200!!!! wtheck?!? that's outrageous! how are students going into architecture supposed to pay for that? (yes - I know there is a cheaper yearly version, but by the time you're done with your classes, you might as well have bought the full version...)

I believe that version comes with Sefaira - a high performance building energy modeling extension. If you don't need that, I don't know why you'd look at that one...

Pretty much the nail in the coffin for SketchUp. Fusion 360 is SO much better for everything except the architectural functions SketchUp is focused toward. And Fusion 360 is free for most casual users.

Current SketchUp user base has no bearing on people NOW abandoning SketchUp for other programs. With the exception I mentioned, there are literally scores of programs out there now that are competitive. Killing plugins in the "free" version is so stupid as to be mind-boggling. It is obvious they want to deliberately drive away casual, hobby. or any non-pro users. Which is fine, it is their business model to do with as they like. I feel bad for SketchUp's current user base. They just got screwed.

Welcome to the modern world of rubbish web apps with permanent upgrade now buttons, infuriating bare bones multi click interfaces that slow down usability, and dumbed down functionality. I really hate the way some of these companies are going, stupid subscription models included! I use sketchup make purely for fun, and have done since Google took over. I mainly use it for modelling rooms in my house, drawing a bit of 3D art, and rendering it in twilight etc. First, there’s no way an online system is storing the contents and layout of my home, second the interface looks extremely boring and lacks a huge amount of the functionality I currently use, and finally these online/app systems have a habit of changing or not working 5-10 years later, so lack long term reliability. Very sad to see sketchup heading this way, let’s hope 2017 continues to work for years to come, I better start backing up my plugins!
