This was a great ride with my pal Al, we rode up from Keswick, through Latrigg and up to Skiddaw summit (3000+ft) and then down the side to the awesome ridge line which comprises of Carl Side, Long Side and Ullock Pike. We chose this particular day (The queens funeral) as we were certain it would be foot traffic free since it’s a cheeky route and we dont like to offend any walkers, but we were surprised to find the lakes absolutely packed. More so than I had seen all year actually!
Still, we were respectful of all foot traffic and had a great day and some brilliant chats with interested walkers.
*Beware*
Some of this is really steep. You simply can’t tell how steep due to the GoPro strapped to my head effect, (Your head is always level to your terrain) but at some point in the video I do show a still with a level horizon on the skiddaw chute of death (As it will now always be referred to...)
My OS maps suggest this is 50%+ and the image suggests that is about right with an almost perfectly horizontal line through the horizon.
My new Hope Tech 4 brake pads just cooked, and because we didnt even stop on the ridge, they never had chance to recover thermally. (I know, I know, I need bigger balls and less brakes really...)
All in all, an awesome route, but be aware that the ridgeline is NOT a bridleway and you will also need to get off and walk on at least two extremely Steep sections.
Ride data can be found here on my Garmin account:

Good video Stewart. Many years ago i parked at Threlkeld and rode/walked/carried up to Skiddaw summit and rode back down the same way. Favourite answer to walker's "why" question was " it's only the same as carrying a rucksack up, but you can't ride back down on a rucksack ! "

Ha, that’s a really good reply! Wouldn’t fit quite so well with a 25kg EMTB but to be fair, my old overnight hiking rucksack was about 18kg with cooker and stiff in it.

As with every other video of this route, you miss out all the bits you cannot ride unless your danny mac, the top bit off of skiddaw is unrideable unless you have a death wish as its so steep and slatey. Did this with best mate as his first mtb ride in 2020.... he nearly threw me off lol. Most of it was pushing down. If anyone is considering ullock pike as the down ride, forget it. You are better off just going back the way you rode up to skiddaw.

Really? Unless you are talking about a different “Top bit off Skiddaw” then I can only assume you didn’t even watch the video? Maybe watch it and you will see at 41seconds I actually make a point of how steep it is there and show a still of why we had to walk it? Other than that too section of the Skiddaw slate chute the only other hike a bike part I recall is the actual Crags at Ullock just before you drop down to the forest path. The rest of it is pretty much all rideable. The best route off Skiddaw in my opinion is the descent over Bakestall, turn right and along Birketts edge down to whitewater dash then round skiddaw house to Lonsdale crags.

@@StewartSanderson all im saying is this not a full video of how difficult this route is. You blanked out your route off the top, that first bit off the top is very steep, i have limited skills but realistic and couldnt ride that 1st 200m off the top, managed the bottom bit down to ullock, but then theres a bit on ullock thats so steep we had to hand the bikes down to one another, just saying its another bit you faded out, as at the top. Look pal i did this route off of the back of another vid like yours and its not as great as peeps make out and ive done some tough routes.

@@tonysmyth1767 well all I can tell you is I rode it right to that point at 41 seconds where I got off as it became too steep and loose and it was the most interesting part, that’s why it’s the only part i really showed… of me WALKING it. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Of course the full route isn’t shown, it’s a 5 minute video of a 2hour route! 🫣

Plus my video description also makes it very clear it’s a tough route don’t you think?

@@StewartSanderson then hats off to you, all im saying is these vids are not a true representation of what that route is like, skiddaw is better as an up and down the main path. Ive done nan bield pass/high street from haweswater try that
