Skin Care tips - reducing pores
Shrinking down enlarged pores and treating acne scarring is one of the most commonly performed procedures. With a wide selection of lasers, chemical peels and energy devices, I tailor treatments according to the skin type, and pore size of the patient. What causes enlarged pores?
The cause of enlarged pores are often due to genetic factors. It is well known that certain ethnic skin types such as Asian and darker skin types have enlarged pores as well as blackheads. This is due to the fact that genetically these patients are raised in an environment where humidity is high and the skin needs to breathe - hence pores are more prominent. In Caucasian patients enlarged pores can be due to genes but also loss of collagen. Enlarged pores are also due to the reduction of collagen and elastin. As one ages, there is a reduction in the support of pores and hence they appear larger over time.
What is the best treatment for enlarged pores?
This will depend on your ethnic skin type, your age and at the size of your pores. Pores can be divided into large, medium and small pores.
What can be done for large isolated skin pores?
Enlarged deep and wide skin pores can be secondary to acne or chickenpox. My treatment of choice for ice pick scars is TCA CROSS. Dilated pore of Weiner is best treated with punch excision.
What can be done for the treatment of generalised enlarged pores?
Fractionated laser resurfacing provides a very reliable and low risk method of reducing skin pore sizing. If skin pores are generally enlarged, use either the Clear + Brilliant system or the Fraxel laser. In older patients with larger skin pores, we often combine with the Fraxel 1550 with 1927 in what is known as the Fraxel Dual mode. For ethnic skin types, my choice is with the Picosure Focus laser.
Can microneedling help with your skin pore sizing?
Yes, I use the INFINI RF System with PRP. Most patients require 2-4 sessions. PRP is called platelet rich plasma and helps with healing and gives better results.
Can chemical peels help with skin pore sizing?
Yes. My choice is with TCA peels, my nurses use Glycolic and lactic acid peels, however for large deep pores, I use up to 100% TCA on spots or 35% TCA with Jessner’s as a general peel.
