Skinamarink is the latest indie horror movie to get viral attention. It is easily one of the most experimental films I've ever seen. It is also one of the most agonizing movie experience I have had in years.

I had a weird theater experience with this one. It was an absolute packed house. Im talking Infinity War/No Way Home packed house. Everyone was reacting to the jumpscares. When it ended and the lights came back on some guy yelled “THATS IT!?!?” The looks on everyone’s faces leaving the theater was hilarious, they were all so confused. The fact so many people came out of the woodworks to stare at walls and carpet for two hours is just so funny to me. Props to the filmmaker honestly.

Sounds like my experience when I saw The Blair Witch Project. After it did really well in arthouse theaters, they released it to the multiplexes. After failing to get tickets for the arthouse showings, I finally saw it opening night at my local theater. When the movie ended, a lot of people booed. They must've thought there would be an actual witch chasing teens around the woods. I loved it.

I have to admit, there were two scenes in this movie that genuinely got under my skin and unnerved me, that hardly ever happens for me anymore. I totally understand why this movie won't be for everyone. I don't think it's the best movie ever by any means, but I have to say I haven't stopped thinking about it since I've seen it. Great review Cody, love your take on it and I agree 100% about what you said about the director and and his story.

@thomasdesposito
@thomasdesposito Год назад
That fucking toy phone..... Holy shit! When we see it in the dark those eyes were evil as hell, then between flashing the light on and off and then it happened... The subtle way the eyes go from looking normally then it changes to make it look like the eyes were staring at us the viewer along with the subtle change in the smile. Also the sound they used for that jumpscare was so damn unique. That got me real good lol. The scenes where Kaylee is in the parents bedroom was another creepy as hell moment, but the best jump scare is without a doubt when poor Kevin walks to the basement to find his big sister without eyes and mouth, incredibly effective and IMO the jumpscare didn't feel cheap to me in this film compared to how many directors use the jump scare to make their shitty scary movie seem scarier than they really are.

Now I’m not even going to begin talking about your bit about action films because that’s irrelevant. Others were saying “This film won’t be for everyone” you make those words hold weight because this is definitely not for You. Do I think this is entertaining or a “Work of art” or I “love it”. The real short answer is “No” but I liked it, I like the concept because this isn’t your typical, normal tradition “Horror Film”. Talk about the “Hype”. It’s about what is taking place in certain shots that linger for a certain about of time having the viewer look into a dark abyss is what creeps me out in real life, and that’s what you see in this film in multiple scenes and I thought that was neat actually capturing a fear of mines in real life. I really like this film. It totally hit me in the childhood. I would have been a kid around Kaylee/Kevin’s age in 1995 and had a camera a few years later. This took me to a dark place I used to fear when I was little. I can’t think of a more nightmarish scenario than waking up and our parents being gone, no doors, no windows…it touched on some fears hidden deep inside.
@CaShM0n3y1000
@CaShM0n3y1000 Год назад
The no doors no windows part sounds like it could be a great idea for a nightmarish scenario...except 90 something percent of those doors and windows were very present through the whole movie. Those doors and windows were actually most of the only things we even get to see in it. I think only two random doors disappeared, unless i tuned out more than I realized and missed all the other doors and windows disappearing.
@1000000man1
@1000000man1 Год назад
Also, what I think a lot of people are missing is that where the runtime feels long and tedious, because that's what the kids are going through. They're *waiting* for their parents to come back, so the film *must* reflect the long wait.

My buddy brought this movie up out of the blue. I hadn't hear of it before but he always brings me to the wierd ones. Can honestly say it was one of the most terrifying movie experiences iv had. And I understand why it's polarizing. I had fairly frequent nightmares as a kid and the Foley work on the crunching of the carpet and the lo-fi frackling of the shitty vhs reminded be of the times I'd be making my way through a dark hallway to my parents room or going downstairs where the TV was with the tinnitus of a silent house making every little sound more terrifying . I feel like some shots could have been taken out but I'd be lieing if I said every 15 second shot of a dark doorway did have me holding my breath. I recommend this movie even knowing how 50/50 it is cause when it hit it hits.

I honestly think there's a lot of bandwagoning with this movie. Like people feel they should like it or be scared by it, so they prime themselves to have that reaction regardless of whether it's actually scary or makes sense or is good at all. I'm all for indie horror. I'm all for analog horror. I'm all for slow burns. This movie just falls completley flat. Maybe I just don't get the themes of abuse or divorce or whatever. My theory is that if you're not imaginative in the way kids usually are, if you're not the type of person who will imagine horrible things lurking in a darkened closet, it won't do much for you. I don't think it's actually a deep, abstract, art film because it's not really intended to be analyzed. It's really more a visceral emotional reaction it's going for. I think it succeeds remarkably well, but it probably depends on your psychological orientation if it will do anything for you or not.

I personally loved this movie. I thought it was the most interesting movie I've seen in theaters for years, and it scares me in the same way a well-made analog horror film on RU-vid can. It gives me that uncanny uneasiness, and builds dread amazingly well. It was undoubtedly too long, but that is just part of the appeal. If you want a similar type of thing but not a full-length movie, the director's channel 'Bitesized Nightmares' has a 30 minute short film called 'Heck', that basically accomplishes the same things. This movie could have been better if it went more in the Backrooms Found Footage direction, where it used the same experimental tropes, but also added more of a concrete story, but it was still one of the most unforgettable movie experiences I've ever had. 8/10 stars for me.

It lost it's effect, it's charm after the first few minutes and I said to myself, "Am I just going to be staring at still pictures of the wall throughout this whole damn movie?!" And yes, you do. I almost turned it off. I completely agree with you. It felt like one of those eerie fan made horror shorts that were prominent on RU-vid back in like 2013, but wayyyy too long. Painfully long.

Posted a review for this last week and have been very impatiently waiting to hear your thoughts on it because I knew you’d be in the same boat. Hats off to the filmmaker for how much buzz is around this one and for taking an unorthodox swing for the fences…but this ain’t for me.

I wouldn't go as far as 'greatest movie ever', but what i will say is that I appreciated this movie. I thought it was 15-20mins to long and repetitive at times. But some of the scenes brought genuine terror for me, that brought me right back to my childhood nightmares and fear of the dark. I just appreciate that this dude had $15,000, and decided not to make a paint by numbers slasher, or found footage movie. He went for his own artistic vision, and I have to respect that. Some of the more high budget Hollywood horror studios should employ this dude to consult, as he obviously understands unsettling imagery, tension and atmosphere. Completely understand why most people won't like it though, I'd never try to convince someone that, as a movie, it is anything more than just an experiment which I found to be pretty cool!

I'm intrigued, because I like the idea of a movie operating on nightmare logic. But I prefer movies with interesting characters interacting in an interesting/coherent plot, so I know this more than likely isn't my thing.

This movie is all about trying to recreate what a nightmare feels like. They’re strange, confusing, and don’t do what you want them to do. I like character driven horror movies too but this movie delivers the creeps in ways that those types of movies can never do in my opinion. Definitely give it a chance

"this is 90% of the movie" I laughed so hard at this part of the review 🤣 Also the biggest shame about this is that the premise for this movie about the windows and doors slowly disappearing I the house sounds like a great premise for an actual movie. Not an experimental art film
@geet9830
@geet9830 Год назад
agreed. a short film from a kid's POV about their parents disappearing, loosing the comfort of their toys, and their home being slowly morphed and twisted into an inescapable nightmare is a great premise. this just...isn't it. it would've done a lot better as a short film on youtube.

I think seeing it in theaters was the problem. This is a movie you shouldve watched in complete darkness, alone, and with your earbuds in. Dont get me wrong, you are right about the movie being in complete shots and weird sounds but as a kid being a afraid of the dark and having no idea what is in the dark and then hearing a strange sound is scary. Patience is key to this movie. Shouldve stayed home and watched it.

While I respect Cody’s opinion I personally think this movie does the best job of instilling fear over a long term period of time to no extent was this a masterpiece of any sorts but something about watching it is so weird I would suggest you give it some more time and come back to it by yourself I watched it in complete darkness by myself in my room and let me tell you a movie giving me a panic attack was a first for me 😅
@Edgehead991
@Edgehead991 Год назад
Yea this is one of those movies that is 100% dependent on the setting you watch it in. To get the intended experience you basically have to watch it alone in a dark room. That probably isn’t a good sign of a quality film but being able to experience the movie that way gave me one of the most unsettling film experiences I’ve had in a long time.

Someone said the short, "Heck", was like this movie. So I started watching it, made it a few minutes, and thought, "yeah.. I don't think this is for me". I will say though, as a child I was scared of the dark. I used to see this weird static at night, like when the TV is fuzzy. I used to see things in it that frightened me, and other times it was just unusual. It never happened in the daytime, or as an adult. I don't know what it was. But yeah, I don't think this movie will fit my preference either if it's anything similar to Heck.

What I got was. Parents got divorced. mom was at fault, likely crazy and violent. Mom hurt kids and let a demon in. Demon tries to control girl, doesn't work. Takes her eyes and mouth. Demon tries to control boy, worked well enough. Demon takes control of time and makes itself look like the mother, kills boy, and rewinds time to kill him for hundreds of days. Your supposed to feel confused and scared like the kids and also takes the "Its scarier if you don't show it" to heart like bird box. I'd say it did well enough to remind you of when you were a kid and scared of a dark hall at night. But this time there be demons in them there halls.

i share your impression on this movie. the concept and visual style have a lot of potential, A LOT, but lets be honest this is barely a movie. The director could use this in the long run as something to build on in the future or others could use it as inspiration as well so I think its a good thing that this experiment exists. The unsettling calm going on throughout the house and the flashes hiting the walls and distant muffled sounds coming from the TV reminded me a bit of the PT demo that got released for a now cancelled Silent Hill game back then. And thats what I think this movie also happens to be, a demo for something more complete and fleshed out down the line.

This movie fucked me up real bad when I first watched it. Unknowingly for myself I created the perfect viewing atmosphere: I was home alone, I watched it on a very big tv with max volume with lights out at night. I didn't expect that it will hit me so hard by the end of it that I will be really begging myself to turn it off. It was like borderline panic attack. Yeah, it had some moments that dragged, but when it wanted to get serious, it sure did, especially in the last 20 minutes. I was so hyped about this movie after watching it because almost no other movie gave me emotions this intense (come and see is the other film). And then I decided to go to the theatre with my buddies on skinamarink. It was a disaster. It was not scary and people around me didn't help it with munching on popcorn and talking about how dumb the film is. So if you want to experience it really, go watch it in home with the right setup. This film has its flaws and it's totally not for everyone but if you let it it can get pretty deep under your skin

When you said ear piercing, that's all I needed to know I'll be skipping the cinema experience at least. I've seen a few films where the noises are so shrill, loud, obnoxious that I'm physically in pain having to endure it - I don't find that fun, enjoyable or even creepy; it just makes the watch tedious and difficult. I'll wait for Shudder because then I can at least down the volume if it gets too much. Thanks Cody! 🙂

I feel you so hard on this. I give all the props to this guy for getting his film made and released in theaters, but what a slog this was to get through. I also got what he was going for, but did not like the execution. I did not enjoy any part of this film. I was bored, and the parts that were supposed to be eerie or scary, I didn't care about. The concept is scary, but the film was not. I almost saw this in theaters and was so glad I did not, because watching it on Shudder I got so annoyed and angry I started yelling at my computer. I almost gave up on it, but kept thinking maybe something would happen that would make it worth the watch, and I also told my friend who cannot handle watching horror movies that I would watch it and give her a play-by-play. I was just so glad when it was over. Thanks for the review Cody! Great as always.

Really love your reviews, Cody. The last bit where you said you were happy for the director and glad doors could be opening for his career, even though his film wasn't your cup of tea. That's so rare to hear in a negative review. This movie creeped me out. It made my imagination go overboard and that made it good in my opinion. But I can completely understand how and why someone wouldn't like this film at all.
