I’m 34 and definitely made mistakes in my teens and 20’s in regards to skincare. Now I tell all the 20 year olds I know to WEAR SUNSCREEN! DOUBLE CLEANSE! "When you use your serum during the , you'll also avoid the risk of photosensitivity, which can occur in some cases with daytime use" then another article says it can help against environmental agressors during the day so maybe its best used with a SPF in the morning... maybe Susan can help us here !

From my understanding, you MUST wear vitamin C with your sunscreen as it is photosensitive without. I read somewhere that it boosts the effects of sun protection when paired with sunscreen. Would also love susan to address this too.

@sandrallewellyn2632
@sandrallewellyn2632 3 года назад
@@bigcatlove5192 yes, it's interesting how we tend to equate youth with beauty. I watched one of these Vogue(or somebody) skincare routines for a retired super model who was 58 at the time. She was getting so much praise about looking "good for her age," EXCEPT in all honesty she did not. Between the completely gray hair, sagging skin, heavy wrinkles and age spots on her face and hands, a lot of us thought she was around 65-70 and were SHOCKED to discover she was "only" in her 50s... That being said, she was still absolutely GORGEOUS! Though were some who were emphatically tried to claim she looked "good for her age," anyone with eyes over the age of 25 could see that was RIDICULOUS(most late 50s yr olds don't look as old as she did no matter how much skin damage they have)! I was NOT trying to shame her whatsoever, but I did say(not in these exact words) that she was not a good or even typical example of a 58year old in terms of looks. I received some pushback and realized it's because people kept hearing *not looking "good for her age"* as being the same as *"she does not look good."* And to be clear, I thought she was still a very good looking woman. These two are separate things! - or at least not mutually exclusive. This retired model looked good regardless of how old she was or how old she "looked" and for THAT reason she made 58 look good, not because she looked young, but because she still had beauty. Period. A few friends of mine from college, at 24, had VERY noticeable forehead wrinkles and/or wisps of gray hair ALREADY, which made them look way older - but they were still really good looking young women. Honestly, age is just a number, therefore looking "good for your age" is relative/arbitrary. In the end, we should expand our preconceptions/conditioning around age & beauty because I'd rather be told "she looks good AT her age," rather than FOR her age. I'm going to look old as hell someday, can't escape that forever, but I DEFINITELY plan on looking good when I get there! lol

And I was and still am the only one in my family who has issues. I learned way more when I became an esthetician, (I don’t currently work in the field tho) but it’s helped me through the yrs. I’m also a mother of 2, and my skin with my second was just a mess. It’s been almost 5 yrs and this last year especially has been the big change, I over hauled everything and it’s made a huge difference. Aging is coming into play and I’m adding things slowly. But I’m not afraid of aging either. It’s a personal journey for sure, you learn about your self more and then learn about your skin

The tip about not pushing a certain ingredient or product on your skin is so important. My skin is super oily and pretty resilient -- but glycolic acid breaks me out every time. I can use it for months, and I will keep breaking out. Meanwhile, salycilic acid doesn't do much for me. Even though these are "holy grail" ingredients to most people, they don't work as well for me as more gentle products like niacinamide, azelaic acid, etc.

When you start to see an esthetician regularly, what do you get scheduled? Is it just a skin check or does the esthetician decide? What do I say haha

Good question! Like what do I book for?!
@justynalupa3729

You can just book a consultation and go from there. They can schedule follow up treatments based on what you discussed :-)
@ruth98765

I've been to places that have free consultation and you can discuss your skin & the plan then. I just go for a classic facial which means my esthetician decides because for me it is more about pampering. 😀 😍 she has also done microdermabrasion and so on if she found it necessary at that time.

for the first appointment, I'd contact them, explain shortly how my skin is and what my concerns are, and then ask them what should we do, and when I go to the initial appointment, I'd ask what type of facials and treatments do they provide and ask for explanation for what each does, and then for the later appointments I'd just go off of that :)

You just book a facial and you discuss on the day what you need done. When you use the same esthetician, they get to know you, so you both know what happens next.

Love love love u! I’m grateful I’ve been into skincare since high school but slacked when I got pregnant bc I was sooo exhausted with two under two. Now I’m like ahhhh I need to get back to it bc I can def see the difference in my skin when you don’t take care of it. You are def goals when I hit my 40s

Omg susan, I was just thinking about the vitamin c! Looking at my skincare routine, I always thought I must have a vitamin c on my morning routine, yet my skin doesn't enjoy it so I started using a 5% niacinamide serum on morning and my skin loves it! And my 2021 skincare goals will be stop (or minimalize) trying new products and stick with my already established routine 😂

I love that you always mention skincare is personal, 💯 agree! I really started to pay more attention to my skincare routine in my late twenties (wish I would’ve started sooner but didn’t notice breakouts until then for better or for worse) and now even more so in my 30s. Also love your point about being more confident as we age which I can definitely relate to. I’ve binge watched a lot of your content and learning a ton from your channel, thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge. 💕😊

I'm 36 now but I'm so glad I never got the tanning and make up wipes hype. I bought a skin book when I was 13 and stopped spending time in the sun. I just wish I started sunscreen earlier and skipped the St Ives in my teens

Omg, please talk about your psoriasis! Do you deal with hair loss because of it? It is something you have to constantly manage with steroids? Do certain hair products seem to trigger it? I've had it on the back of my scalp since I was a child.

I hateddd makeup wipes but I also hated everything else to take off my makeup. I needed at least two to three, and my skin is already so dry, the wipes probably caused scratches I didn't know where they came from. Makeup removing oil balm literally changed my life because they're so easy!

I was born in Aug 1990, so Susan is 9-10yrs older than me;) I never "freaked" about aging and was excited to get older(for the wisdom and confidence) until now because all in the same year, I turned 30(the same age my parents were when I was born) and I'm starting to notice the folds around my mouth... I've always prided myself on looking younger than I am(others would comment on being surprised that I'm in my late 20s) but sometime between 28 and 30 I started to notice: "Damn! I do NOT look like I'm in my early 20s anymore!" I've been so lazy about my skincare in the past few years. Even though I wasn't the most informed, believe it or not I was much BETTER about consistent skincare up until age 24! I've definitely relied on my "good genes"(aka YOUTH & "black don't crack") until now and not so much on products, diet, water in-take, etc. Unfortunately it's catching up and in addition to my skin changing in ways I'm unfamiliar with(and therefore at a loss as to how to treat), my skin has also lost moisture and elasticity in alarming amounts on my face AND body(overall I've let my self-care go..). So NOW I'm starting to panic! lol It's so great to have Susan/Mixed Makeup as a guide for this, because I too have Lupus SLE AND she makes 40 look so good! Plus, this is a good reminder that it's not too late to (re)start and it's more imperative than ever that I GET IT TOGETHER lol

Thank You for your commentary on filler and botox. I'm 45, struggling with if I need to get my eye troughs filled. I've debated. I do get laser for melasma...I live in So.Cal and drive so much, which affects my skin. I have thought the same thing about the filler/botox..I think its a thing you will become dependent on and aging gracefully is probably (although a challenge) a better bet.

Birth control really is a big thing! I’m in my mid/late 20s and had a torrid affair with the pills and the shots. But I got an IUD (no kids) and on year 2 I feel like my hormones have finally leveled out. I understand the fears of IUDs but if you’re not good at the pill & don’t want a bunch of hormones rushing through your constantly please think about a longer term birth control! 🤞🏾

I'm also turning 40 this year and a lot of your tips are ones I also realized as I got older. I cringe thinking about all the time I spent in tanning beds when in university (thinking it would help clear my skin). I also found getting off of birth control was a big factor (I also did the same as you with it).

Good for you. I enjoyed this video. Thanks for the honesty. I don’t like how Botox looks on some Younger girls... they do look older. It’s a trend where I live. I’m 24 and girls my age have gotten so much work on their face. Smh. Imagine when they’re like 34 if they keep it up they’re gonna look so bad

Try Trifarotene! It is a new retinol that is more effective and for sensitive skin. "Trifarotene has a 20 times greater selectivity for RARg over RARa and RARb, whereas tretinoin and adapalene have less specificity." This is why it less sensitizing and more effective.
