I am in Occupational Therapy school and hearing how it important it is for you to complete your tasks independently reminds me of why I’m in school in the first place! You are a rockstar!!

I can’t even put into words just how inspirational you are. To say that you are brave and strong would be selling you short. You are my hero.

Love this! So glad the door frame allows you to wheel in. You can try removing the cabinet door so your knees can fit in there and possibly allow you to get closer to the sink/mirror. We did this for my mom when she was in a wheelchair and wanted to reach the sink knob.

I love seeing the different ways you problem solve and make creative adaptations! Such a rockstar!!

Makayla there are so many things I want to say but I’ll keep it short. I’ve commented one or two times previously and I’m trying not to repeat myself. You are the bravest, strongest, most beautiful young lady I know. A lot of the time I don’t understand God’s plan for me or for you. We do know though how much we need him. I ask God to be with you, protect you and to never stop blessing you. In Jesus name I pray. Keep shining girl!

As a fellow wheelchair user I can relate to having to say you figure it out to able-bodied people and I can’t say I relate to you completely because I’ve had my disability my entire life but I can relate to learning new things in therapy and finally being able to do things by yourself it’s a great feeling keep up the good work Mikayla you got this and you have the best attitude about it Also I noticed that you were having trouble picking things up and I actually have a service animal for that and he’s really helpful so just thought I’d share I know it’s not for everyone but just thought I’d mention it from somebody that struggles to pick up caps all the time

Definitely look into removing the cabinets under the sink so that you can get closer!

Hi Mak, there are specialized sinks for wheelchair users which are shallow and better accessible. Also they have taps with extended handles.

You are amazing and an inspiration! ❤ While I’m not paralyzed, I do have some mobility issues in my legs, so I’m not able to do many things as easily (or at all) anymore, so I can empathize with being able to do things for yourself again. It’s definitely liberating, and you definitely should be proud of yourself. I would love to see more videos of you doing things for yourself. I think it’s great for people to see and to appreciate all the hard work you’ve done and continue to do with your progress. You truly are doing amazing ❤

as a fellow quadriplegic who brushes her teeth parallel next to the sink as well, i can offer one piece of advice! dixie cups! fill one with water to rinse your mouth and then spit in the other. then dump them in the sink once you are done. it saves a lot of mess and water :) much love xx

You are so beautiful inside and out Makayla! Just a thought that could make your morning routine a little easier: actually, rinsing with water after you brush your teeth can be counterproductive. Some dentists advise instead just spitting out the excess toothpaste but not using water so the fluoride can soak into your teeth. Could make your morning a little easier if you don’t have to worry about the water bottle 💓

Hun you also need a basket of washcloths and hand towels sitting on top of the counter that is easy for you to use and then on the side you can throw the used ones in a laundry basket and also a trash can close by two

Hi Makayla. I have limited hand function like you I’m young and I love my independence. I find the brand PIXI really good for my skin plus they’re quite easy to open independently like the gel cleanser and glow mist tubes and bottles.

I am a SCI occupational therapist. For any bottles or things, I recommend putting rubber bands around the bottle or handle, etc. It will help give some extra traction to grasp things without the ability to grasp. Love your videos 💜

The silicone “caps” for toothpaste are great for not having to take a cap off everyday, but seal off. Lost function of my ulnar nerve for several months so lost the ability to twist tops off and hold things and that was an investing I found and still use several years later

Definitely get an electric toothbrush.. I have als and it’s suchhhh a huge help because I can’t really lift my arm😅 and I also use my knuckles to clean my face 😂it’s tiring but I gotta do it

they make sinks without the cabinets underneath. Look into a counter hight sink at lowes or home depot. You may have an easier time with that height as your chest will be closer to the sink

Hey Mak, possible tip for pots with twist tops. I can't do twist tops because my fingers dislocate so I do it by holding the pot between the palms of my hands and turning my hands in opposite directions. Not sure if that'd work for you with your arm/hand strength (obv my disability is completely different).

Makayla’s happiness is more addictive than the most powerful drugs. I imagine that this is what Jesus is like or something. Lol
