I’ve read some literature on how some native peoples when they went on bison hunts that a small group of men and women would go and while the men would hunt the women would set up the processing center. And they would work together to process up to twenty animals a day. I can’t imagine how strong and skilled they were to get this done. Of course not all was done in a day. But they had to act fast or the meat would be ruined and the predators were also all around. I have only ever done a rabbit and that took me forever. My respect for anyone that can do this has gone up considerably.

One of the really interesting things I got from watching this, is a real grasp of why it was so common for the larger game hunters, from our collective history, to be nomadic. There is no reasonable way I can see, that makes processing the sheer volume of game needed to feed a clan/tribe one animal at a time, or dragging it back to camp after a longer hunt, practical from a stationary location. It makes so much more sense to hunt serval animals at once, and just move the camp to the hunting site for processing so there can be all of the available labor needed to preserve the large amounts of food, & resources, before spoilage sets in. Very cool Ryan, thanks for doing the things.

Dang beautiful meat. Back in 2008, was hunting with my son and we dropped a Bull elk 2 1/2 miles in the timber. We each took a quarter and hiked out on our first trip. When we came back we had to argue with several coyotes that had found our kill. We had to finish processing the elk while we were circled and harassed by the coyotes. They would holler and snap at us, but never attacked. Not sure why they were so determined.

That literally reads as the formula for domestication, I have noted this as a theoretical reason for the domestication of dogs. On a timeline we can trace cats and pigs back about 10,000 yrs, makes sense, cats protect grains from rats etc, pigs are good food, smart and can literally grow on food inedible to humans, aka rotten fruit or grains, grass and even minerals from dirt. But dogs were at least 20 to 40,000 years ago, my theory is they were welcome and thrown scraps as they would likely surround the kill site, this could be advantageous in the event of other animals trying to scavenge the kill, EG; Patient dogs are better than an aggressive bear, and a predator such as a bear would be less likely to attempt to steal a kill from a site full of both humans and surrounded by a pack of wolves.
@kyledexheimer6548

Not to mention the wolf/dogs would pick up on a bear coming into the kill and could alert the humans.

Awesome job, awesome video. I'm glad you touched on the historical gender roles and participation. I learned long ago that the plains Indians woman owned the home. They owned it because, after the hunt, she processed the animal. She did the work processing the meat for the meals, the hide for the tipi cover, the sinews and bones for tool work. It was great also to hear your perspective and knowledge on that. And I loved you talking about those hogs hanging around.
@jaymannewell

This is actually more common than people think today, Many cultural groups are well documented as matriarchal societies, in some places today women are ranked by lineage and men must perform to acquire status, I worked in an indigenous community where the womens council decided who went on a hunt and when, it is considered a privilege to be able to go hunting just to give your spoils to the head matriarch. Historically evidence suggests the same of many European tribes pre christianity.

It is disgusting that videos like this get age restricted/demonetized. This offers a very important perspective to where our food comes from and the sacredness of our wildlife. I get it some people might think it’s gross but I think those are the people who need to see this the most. Besides that, this is also a great insight to how effective the seemingly outdated Native American technology and techniques were. I grew up in Oklahoma where there was a big focus on Native American culture and this video did a better job of displaying what life was like then than anything I got from history class. The native Americans deserve a lot of credit for their resourcefulness persistence and teamwork and it is sad that a lot of people never see this.

First of all, great video! Good of you to demonstrate such useful knowledge. Second, this may be a dumb question, but my experience is limited. Given your comments on double-edged stone knives, do you think double-edged metal knife would be useful for processing game? I wonder because I am lazy and don't like resharpening in the field :) and I like classic leaf shaped blades for utility, but also because a lot of old hunters I've talked to like to lecture me on how easy it is to puncture the wrong organs or make other unintentional cuts when there is a sharp point or a sharpened back edge on a knife.
@huntprimitive9918
@huntprimitive9918 2 года назад

Just watching this again Ryan. Enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. I know you lived out here in Montana for a while. When our Native American brothers and sisters on the plains butchered bison they rolled them on their stomach split the skin from tail to head and pulled it off that way. Is there any archaeological context for that happening in your area? They could lay out the skin and butcher the meat on the skin that way. Keep up the good work . I’ll keep watching.👍👍👍🏹🏹

You have demonstrated just how profound a difference a knife handle makes. The archaeology books all talk about hafted spears. Knife handles came along a lot earlier and the vast majority of modern people still have daily use of knife handles. The discussions of hafted spears I've heard all my life seem beside the point. Watching someone cut meat with a flint flake is like watching them butcher a bison with a double sided razor blade. You would get cut. Aurignacian didn't do that. Australopithecus didn't do that. Boxgrove had a modern butcher work with hand axes. No trouble. He said you need to keep a wet hand holding the meat and a dry hand holding the hand ax. But it worked fine.

It seemed like you were right at the point of having enough hands to do the work but also riding the edge of getting in each other’s way. Maybe with a larger group others would be waiting in the wings to resharpen knives, haul off cuts, or spell out folks who got tired? Just something I was thinking about watching this. Great work!

Just a thought...If primitive people were intelligent enough to knap the finest points, feed the masses, sew their clothing, make all weather shelter's, and ultimately survive long enough for modern man to watch you tube?........Does anybody think that maybe the carcass was hung to make processing easier? I know this is new to me and, in relation to time, BRAND NEW to all of humanity, but it doesn't mean stop thinking!

Think I'll stick to deer or, maybe, goat. Much easier to, just, hang from a tree trunk and let gravity help. Interesting!

Looks like you caped the head for taxidermy. Not a whole lot less efficient than steel knives.

Yup I did. I hope to have a public facility some day that folks can come visit and see a lot of the bigger animals we did videos on.

Jesus christ there are so many weird goddamn noises. This is a really NOISY operation. So many ripping sounds and squelches and sloshes and all sorts of that shit. I never knew it'd be this loud and noisy. Horror film sound and visual effects ain't got shit on this.
