I remember an ex-friend of mine trying to get me to do a diet with her and thought it was a good idea until she told me it was to essentially starve myself for 2 weeks and only consume water and supplement pills. I was like, "That's not a diet, that's just starving yourself like you're on a deserted island. That's going to damage your body." She told me that it was ok, that many people have done it, and after you finish the "diet" you need to eat soft food like soup to train your stomach to eat again. I told her that's literally the medical treatment given to survivors who've been lost in the wilderness and nearly starved to death. Needless to say, I did not partake and found out later she had multiple eating disorders. We had just graduated high school. A lot more education and therapy should be given to minors about the dangers of these "diets".

these were already so sad and horrific to think about, but the tapeworm story actually reminded me of something just as terrible on the exact opposite end of the spectrum: a friend of a friend was attempting a "detox" and ended up... taking several coffee enemas for weeks. they later sent out pics of their actual literal shit in the toilet saying "look at this huge worm i just passed from my detox!" and my friend eventually had to tell them like dude, that's not a parasite you had... that's straight up part of your intestinal lining. 🤢 the things we do in the name of "health", like pretending that being thin automatically makes you healthy...

My mom was an extremely strict raw vegan for many years. She would drink these smoothies she called "green detox smoothies". Which translated to her having to run to the bathroom to poop every hour. I swear. We couldn't go out for a day of leisure without her needing a bathroom 45 minutes after just having used one. It got so bad her fingers started to loose sensation and her arms and feet would go numb. When we finally convinced her to see a doctor, he ran some tests and told her her body wasn't producing enough blood. That's why her appendages were going numb. She couldn't produce enough blood to properly circulate blood to her whole body. She also lost a lot of hair, and her teeth got really thin and yellow. Luckily since then she has left the vegan diet behind and is now much better. Her hair is slowly filling in But yes, she did all that for weight loss.

Veganism is not a diet, it is a lifestyle committed to ending animal cruelty. Eating only fruit or leafy veggies to lose weight or “be healthy” is an eating disorder. Calling it veganism is just a way to distract from the mental illness leading you to starve yourself.

Never heard about this compound, or the death cases... I don't generally read tabloids which would probably cover this topic the most. But reading about it, it was used as a diet pill in 1930s, just to be banned within a decade. Back then people really used all sorts of stuff and DDT was considered safe and used widely! Imagine that. Amphetamines came on later, just to be banned too. Nobody bans ultra processed food industry though, that is the culprit of making people fat while making them eat like pigs, because it was designed like that.

Hell when someone asked me what diet I did I just flat out told them to just eat regular portions and sport for an hour a day cause that's healthier than whatever I am doing now. That is amazing. I work at a gym, and my co-workers always talk about cheat days and weight loss, and it's something that concerns me because the conversations my co-workers and some customers have are heavily rooted in diet culture, but they don't see how damaging it really is/can be. My supervisor (boss) is trying to lose weight, and she has been switching diets regularly; from low carb to keto in a matter of weeks, she weighs herself everyday (sometimes multiple times a day). If feel like gyms shouldn't promote diet culture and I feel like gyms/personal trainers should teach that there is no such thing as good or bad foods and that food can impact your weight but maintaining eating and exercising balance will have the best impact on your body and mental health. I believe you can eat what you want and still achieve the body you want you just have to manage.
@DinkyInky2

@00Rav3n00 It boggles the mind how bad it is at gyms(and why I stopped going). I went there for exercise, and knew I would GAIN weight as my muscle mass increased. To hear people talk about how little they ate as they did intensive workouts(I did 100+ lb leg lifts, rowing, pectoral/shoulder workouts(keeping my shoulders fit keeps injuries I had as a youth from impacting my day-to-day), cardio, and fed my muscles loads of proteins and enough carbs to stop my hypoglycemia from being a PitA. I never had good looking abs, and after having kiddo, the muscle tears insured they'd look less so, and I couldn't care less. My only spot I want to fix are my triceps, as I inherited the family chicken wings. My stepdad, who used to live at Gold's(until diet culture ruined the atmosphere) Gym, helped me with a basic routine so I could avoid it, and at least be healthy. I walked into a gym this year for the first time in two decades after getting a try it free offer, as I wanted to work on my arms on the rowing machines and regain their former shape, and use some treadmill machines, as it's better than walking in the heat, heard someone talk about eating 800 calories a day with only 8g carbs, so they could fit into a dress and walked out. I'm going to be snagging some new wrist and ankle weights so I can workout at home, because I can't listen to that without speaking my mind at them, and I know that they won't care.

I’ve never gone as far as diet teas and the like, but I’ve presumably tried every fad diet on this planet. Background: I never had problems with weight. I was an hourglass figure, about 5 centimetres too tall for a woman. Then I got ill and ended up with an unending amount of pills, in a desperate bid to keep me alive. Those pills increased my weight at an unnerving rate and no amount of counting calories in or out helped me change the trajectory. Well, that’s where I lost my nerve and just tried *anything* the internet, a health guru or some bargain bin book would throw at me. People treated me differently - substantially worse - literally every week of weight gain. I hated what I saw in the mirror, I didn’t recognise myself anymore. I struggled being close with my partner, not because he was grossed out, but because I was. I constantly had to disclose to complete strangers my medical situation in order to put some breaks on the constant comments on my body - often with little effect. Also, I can tell you, that diet advice is everywhere. Any magazine you pick up at the dentist? Diet advice! The algorithm realising you want to lose weight? Diet advice! Visiting that aunt who only knew you before your health collapsed? Diet advice! Well, I tried it all and I seriously messed with my health as a result. My digestion was awful for literal *years*, because of the weird stuff I was throwing at myself, hoping that this was finally the solution. I became so weak, I struggled to get out of bed, because I was fasting for silly amounts of time - combined with my health crisis, this was incredibly *bad*. My weight did stabilise eventually (though the doctors told me it had nothing to do with my diet, just what happens with medication triggered weight gain). Didn’t matter to me! It was *working*! I just needed to do MORE!! Honestly, it was a nightmare. They only managed to put my head back on straight in hospital. It took years for my relationship with diet culture, food and my body to normalise. My health getting better and the associated pill reduction leading to almost instant weight loss, also somewhat helped. That and the body positivity/healthy at every size movement. The latter helped me figure out exercises I could do with my new body and encouraged me to just…eat healthily no matter what the number on the scale says. The former helped me slowly feel less disgusted with my new form. I now hit the gym or my sport group 5 times a week and cook a lot from scratch. Realistically I am in better shape than I’ve been all of my life. I am still plus sized though, have those lovely stretch marks extremely rapid weight gain gifts you and some flabby skin. The whole experience has left me incredibly resentful with the entire diet industry and often, even other people who are the biggest part of the problem. If my environment hadn’t changed so noticeable, I am not sure I would have fallen as far as I did. Makes me even sadder to see young, healthy people harm themselves, even kill themselves, with this crap. Part of me is angry, because they have been blessed with a healthy, perfectly functioning body and this is what they chose to do with it…but I would absolutely lie, if I didn’t know exactly where they came from.

Eventually I got off the meds a couple years later but didn't lose the weight. Fast-forward 10 yrs, developed arthritis and fibromyalgia, chronic pain and fatigue. Went on a bunch of meds, gained another 50 lbs. Now I sit at almost 300 lbs. I struggle all the time with my body image but I try not to do so in front of my children. I don't want them to hate their body. Thankfully, my husband loves me despite the weight gain. My parents on the other hand are "concerned" about my health. Which triggers me to hate myself even more. I am so happy that people are realizing that we are not cookie cutters to all look the same. I hope to get to a point in my life where I am happy with my physical self but it's been and continues to be a long and difficult journey.

Never ever touching that stuff again. 3- the laxative teas, that turned into just taking laxatives post surgery because I'd starved myself for 2years to lose weight for the surgery, and then the 2 surgeries on top of the starving made my bowels all messed up, and then I relied on the laxatives and ah. I may have permanent damage from that, but after a year I feel like it's starting to become normal. It's really hard not "dieting" to lose fat when my natural body is heavy. I have a big skeletal frame (hips, shoulders, ribs) and gain muscle so easy, just a mini-tank, and then having a healthy amount of fat on top of that just makes me look huge, and thick strong women aren't liked, especially growing up in the heroin-chic millenial era that I did. I looked at photos of me as a 15yo, showed them to my kids this week, and I couldn't believe I thought I was fat. I use to cry from being teased about how ugly and fat I was and I looked fucking amazing. And even now, I'm so strong, so healthy, I'm the smallest I've ever been, but I keep comparing myself to others and thinking I'm huge. I hate it. And I'm so sick of starving myself so I'm not. I eat what I want, I work out heaps (Muay Thai and weight lifting) and I feel and look amazing. Just need to shut the voices up in my head.

Yes, I understand this feeling. I spent years being told I was too big. It's only been in the last year that my brother got through to me with the reality that he and I are very similar in that our genetics dictate that we are built dense with large bones and a tendency to build a lot of muscle very fast. Honestly, finding out that functional fitness was an option was probably the best thing to happen to my relationship with my body in years. The focus on what I can do rather than what I look like or the number on the scale is much less fraught with discouragement.

I remember when I was younger and I hated my hips. I wanted to be a stick like the other girls, but it was never going to happen. No matter how little I ate, I would never be able to change my body shape. I’m 30 now and it’s crazy to see pictures of 16 year old me that was 9 stone and thinking I was obese. I really thought I was, it takes a long time to overcome body dismorphia, and to fade those voices in your head.

As a woman with a bigger frame my body holds onto fat like I'm going to starve at any time. I feel you so much. It took me 20 years, but I found what works for me and It's technically a "trend" even though I follow a relaxed version. I asked my doctor before starting and all i got back was an "okay". It just depends on what your body needs and what you want out of your life.

So much of that mindset is the era we were raised in. Having heroin chic and then low-rise jeans/exposed midriff in rapid succession was just hell on womens’ self esteem. I was thin. Like, *thin* thin, and I still starved myself because I thought I needed to be thinner. No muffin top!!! And by that point your perception of yourself is SO warped, you can’t see what’s in front of your face. I am so proud of many of the young women today, rejecting that mindset. It’s not perfect but it is so much better than it was in the 90s/00s.

When I was in middle school my gym teacher made us measure our BMI right in front of the other kids. I was maybe a little chubby for a 12 year old my height (hell, I still am) and I remember it really upset me for a few weeks being told mine was too high. Luckily it didn’t have any long lasting affects on me, but it’s actually really upsetting to think back and realize a grown woman thought it was a good idea to publicly measure a child’s BMI in front of their classmates, at an age that kids are already starting to get self conscious and insecure.

Recently I've been told by quite a few people that I should try this diet try this tea try this and that to lose weight and its been weighing on me and I felt tempted. I'm in recovery from a mixture of eating disorders so I have to be careful with content like this, but it's good to see unhealthy diet practices not being glamorised. At my worst I used to buy all kinds of unknown diet supplements online - mostly tablets but some foot patches as well. I was taking all sorts of weird things trying to lose weight, as well as overexercising which resulted in me sustaining a knee injury that still occasionally flares and causes me pain over 10 years later. Diet culture and normalising all these weird diet pills is so dangerous, and it's often people who have skewed views of how they look that are buying potentially lethal drugs. My boyfriend asked me while I was watching this why anyone would buy drugs from the dark web or unknown sources, but I explained that when you're not thinking clearly because of an eating disorder or body dysmorphia, you don't think about these things, you just want to do anything to lose weight. It's really horrible. I'm very careful now not to set those old thinking patterns off, I avoid triggers as I don't want to go back to that dark place. To anyone struggling - recovery is possible, keep fighting through each day. It can and will get better.

Jamila is one of my absolute favorite people. Her posts, podcast and advocacy is amazing with body positivity. She's so brutally honest. I think we need more people like her! As someone who is a trainer/nutrition coach (after my own hard journey) so many struggle with body dysmorphia, eating disorders, etc. It's no joke. I have many friends who have competed in fitness competitions and one of the hardest things is seeing yourself at this "peak" of fitness and then slowly coming back to "being normal." It messes with a lot of people mentally. To stay in that state of fitness is not healthy long term and it's not realistic. But they become so used to seeing themselves super cut, leaned out, muscular, etc. that when they start to adjust their intake after the shows, they hate their bodies. I can see why someone (like the guy you referenced who was very fit) wanted more fat burners and to drop more weight. To most, no one would say he was out of shape or needed to lose weight. It is all such a huge struggle. Getting to be in a healthy relationship with food is a never ending process. In my own struggle (anorexia in my early teens) and severe stomach issues throughout my life thus far, my nutritionist gave out mantra cards to pick from out of a big deck. The one I ended up with said: Healing your body takes one breath at a time. I still repeat that to myself regularly.

In the past, I have come very close to taking some of these "diet supplements " but, luckily, I had people in my life who knew that these were dangerous and provided me with information. I'm now getting back into my pre-COVID routine of eating healthier foods and exercising regularly. I have had a weight plateau for 4 months now and I just want to fit into my clothes again. I have had a healthy weight lifting routine with balanced diet for many months with no change. Those pills damaged me, I admit I did a few rounds of them when I needed to drop weight quickly. Don’t do it, just don’t do it while you’re young. Don’t take the fat burners. As sb who recovered from Anorexia and then Bulimia, it's nice to see someone talking about these things. From my experience, when you're in the throws of an ED, it's so isolating and so mind-twisting, that the ED's "voice" dominates and takes over and can either make you do dangerous things despite knowing better, or just completely silence your sensible self. I always felt like I had a monster on my back controlling me. Without you talking about it and pointing out how dangerous and insane it is, the ED's "voice" goes completely unchallenged. I remember being 14 and hoping to somehow end up in a coma so I'd lose weight, or that I'd get horrible food poisoning so that I'd lose weight. EDs take you to dangerous, dark places.

Thank you for covering this. I feel so much for the poor people that were affected by pills/teas etc. i myself used to be bulimic for a long time. I primarily started with binging and purging as we all tend to relate bulimia to but as time went on I also abused laxatives. I had IBS so was seeing a specialist who prescribed me medical grade laxatives (usually prescribed to much older people) that was like a powder you mixed with a drink and was meant to have maximum half a sachet a day. But my eating disorder spiralled and I ended up having about 2 sachets a day 😫 and then I got on to the detox tea hype and tried that AT THE SAME TIME *shudders* and lost so much weight but felt physically and mentally awful. The doctor that prescribed the sachets knew I had a history of bulimia but didn’t seem to care and I know they do that sort of thing a lot. It’s terrible. Thankfully I’ve been bulimia free for over 5 years now and, although the urges are still there, I will not allow myself to fall back in to that trap. I commend you for making this video and being so diplomatic about this topic. Eating disorders are real and we are made to feel so much shame around them but at the end of the day they are mental health disorders, just like with any other disorder, they need to be treated well and not judged. Supplements like that are so tempting, especially when you feel like you’ve tried so many things, and you just want that little boost. I’m glad I wasn’t on instagram when all those adds were everywhere, cause I’m pretty sure I’d end up buying it😅

I bought diet pills off the internet when I was 16, now at 30 I’m incredibly thankful that they weren’t dangerous. I spent most of my life trying to be stick thin and really messed up my stomach and my mental health in the process. I got diagnosed with adhd a few months ago and finally having those answers and the medication to help me finally have some dopamine is what finally fixed my years of emotional eating. I am now suddenly able to eat intuitively 😊

I was wondering if someone might have mentioned ADHD/meds in the comments! I relate to your comment I chased weight loss for so many years, a combination of trying to combat my 'dopamine eating' + hyperfixations on the process of weight loss itself/my body image. A lot of people talk about how ADHD meds eradicated their appetite but for me it's been more like I've been able to curb the emotional eating/'dopamine seeking' cravings, and I just generally feel a lot more balanced around food now. Tbh the side effects of some of these 'diet' pills sound a lot like the stimulant medication used to treat ADHD but just in an unregulated OTC form. Especially the caffeine 'burner' style ones. It makes one wonder!

My kitten (as small animals do) likes to put everything in his mouth. At ten weeks old, he ate a piece of string. I didn't know this until I saw something hanging out of him after he went to his box. He looked mildly distressed and was a little more distressed when I gently gave it a small tug (while praying he didn't have a worm). Then I carefully cut it down a bit. He was absolutely estatic after his next litter box trip when he got the rest out. He was bouncing all around, babbling his little excited kitten talk that he likes to do. I was estatic that it simply passed and didn't do anything horrible to his intestines. I cannot imagine being a fully sized human being trying to get a once living creature out of my GI track. Like, the possibility of it all just coming out in one go is pretty remote with something very long. And you may not be able to just pull it out either without risk of damaging other things. So...gross.

I remember hearing about the tapeworm thing when it took off and I've never, ever understood it. Why on Earth would anyone willing take on a parasite like that?

The scariest part to me is that U.S collectively pours trillions of dollars into the health industry but the vast majority of Americans aren’t even healthy. The quality of our food sucks, and so we’re told to use supplements to help, but then people end up using supplements to try and replace a good diet and exercise.

I developed an eating disorder as a young teen. It was super easy to get my hands on weight loss meds as a 12 year old from places like Walmart or target. I would over take the suggested amount thinking more meant more effective. I struggled for years. I still do to an extent. Psych meds made me gain weight and I’ve never gotten back to my “normal” body weight or appearance. I actually still love lemonade, but now I don’t put cayenne pepper in it to boost my metabolism

When I was a teen, there were some weight loss tablets in Australia that were banned (but could still get if you knew people) I can’t remember the name, they were so intense that if we were going clubbing we would take them and party all night. My poor heart 😔

As a fat woman who grew up during the "heroine chic" fad of the 90's, it's rough. I literally starved myself until I fainted from low blood sugar trying to be the version of myself that everyone told me I was supposed to be, if only I ate less and exercised more. Yah that doesn't work for everyone. Some people's body's don't respond to that. Some people eat anything they want and are bean poles. You are right, we should be more concerned with actual health instead of just how we look, but that's hard to do.

😂😂 Tapeworm..love your reaction. People were going to dentists and having their jaws wired shut. When I was working long hours I used to down Sudafed( can’t buy that OTC anymore) and drink a ton of coffee with fake sugar. Not a great idea..BTW. I’m surprised I didn’t glow in the dark. I was skinny..however..I was before too.. I just didn’t have a lunch break. People around me thought it was a diet thing and started doing it. It was eventually a grumpy workplace. 😂😂I am, seriously delighted that different sizes and shapes are being shown and praised for their obvious beauty. If we all looked exactly the same how boring. ❤️❤️

Come on! How stupid can we be. If this stuff worked we'd all be thin and could eat and eat. All these do is make the companies rich. Like now people using Ozembic and they eat get nausea and lose weight. I thought that was called Bulemia. I loved your hair at thre begining!

the trend that has come around with Ozempic is insane. my mother is on it as she is diabetic and actually was prescribed it for her health, and it’s crazy to hear how hard it is to find atm because of influencers that take it for quick weight loss.

@@alexandragheorghe7983 Yes it terrible becaise people with diabetes are the ones suffering. I've were peopkes stomach's are getting paralyzed from it. I know about stomach problem in your stomach you have what's called Vegus Netve it gors up to your brain and if you mess with all kinds of things can happen and dr's should explain this to everyone. Dr's who prescibe should have their license revoked. I had a pill prescribed to me for nerve pain that was for epilepsy and my dr should have known it was not for women and in 3 days, I was coughing like crazy in 2 weeks I had pnumonia. Looked it up and saw it made woman get pnumonia but on side effects first one was upper respirtory infection and that was it. My dr got mad it me because I was upset after he looked on his computer and said "Ooo I did'nt see that"! Got mad at me. Got rid of him. Told him "No dr is gonna kil me". Bad Word.

Before ephedra/ma huang was banned in the US I used to take it anytime I wanted to lean down in a short amount of time (I wasn't overweight --I weight trained and it was very popular back then for preworkout and to see more muscle definition fast). I never had a problem with it until I tried a new drink once that was far more potent than I was used to; I should have drank half and not the whole bottle. Well about 10 minutes into my workout my heart started beating so fast and felt like it could burst right out of my chest! Of course I stopped moving immediately and I don't know why I didn't go to the hospital but luckily I was fine by doing some breathwork and resting. It was so scary though! In retrospect I wish I'd never used it. It leaned me down TOO much; I lost my T&A and looked a bit sickly that lean plus I'm sure it messed with my adrenals over the long run. And I sometimes acted bitchy on it. Ugh. These days I just embrace my extra womanly softness and don't care if my abs aren't popping!

I've been struggling on and off with various eating disorders for about a decade. I've never tried weight loss teas or any kind of supplement but seeing adverts for those products at a time I was struggling definitely made me want to restrict my food intake even more. Thankfully, I'm doing better now, but the temptation to try those products is still there. I think that, at the very least, there should be more strict regulations. I'd be very happy to see them banned, though.

I’m 31 and only now I’m getting to a happy place in my relationship with my body and food. I do take more care in what I eat now, but I tried every single diet in my teens and twenties, and it makes me sad to think how much time, especially in my teens, I spent worrying about my body. Even as recently as my early 20s I remember buying that Bootea ‘teatox’ from Holland & Barrett!

ew that tapeworm bit makes me wanna refresh my brain 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 i have no words but enough mental visual vomit to last me the day 🥴😖 i haven't tried any diet pills, but it sucks the lengths people are willing to go to achieve their desired standard. it becomes a very toxic cycle with no end in sight. i hope people are able to love themselves and their vessel. if they want to change any aspect, go ahead but please do so with professional guidance and not random batshit insane methods that could kill you.

on another note, i randomly stumbled upon the supplements subreddit and looking at some peoples daily supplement intake had me shook. i'm not saying some supplements aren't worth it with current studies coming out but damn, it's a bit odd to see people take 7-8 pills everyday. it made me feel like i was missing out but idk i guess that's research for another time omg do you think robert and you would ever do /aita post reactions? it would be interesting and funny (im convinced some of the posts are creative writing answers LOL)

Do be careful of taking too much of any fat soluble vitamins when taking supplements and vitamins. Due to them being stored in the fat they can build up while extra water soluble vitamins will just be peed out. Too much Vitamin A has some serious side effects.

I remember watching this one episode of this show that just had ER doctors and staff retelling their craziest stories and this one story was about a woman who actually purchased a tape worm pill and gave it to her teenage daughter so she would lose some weight for pageant. The daughter ending getting sick but in the end she was ok. The mom claimed she didn’t actually know what was in the pill but even if she didn’t she did still buy black market diet pills and force her daughter to take them. I think she should have lost custody or faced criminal charges for that.

I went to the doctor a couple weeks ago to talk about how I have been dieting very hard and hardly losing any weight and wanted to talk about some options. She wanted to put me on an appetite suppressant which I turned down. I found that very odd that an appetite suppressant would be the first thing to she would suggest. She also said it can cause insomnia so you need to take it early in the morning which makes me think it has some kind of caffeine or stimulant properties which I do not do well with because I have really bad anxiety so I dont even drink coffee. She also suggested ozempic but said it would be $1400 every time I get it at the pharmacy.
