It is true to an extent. Stephen A only used to come on once a week and those were the most popular viewings. And things did skyrocket when Stephen A joined permanently in 2012 because of the Tebowmania debates. At the same time, to suggest that it was failing before Stephen A and that Skip had "taken it as far as he could go" is flat out wrong.

Wow! And this is how these "types of individuals" handle stories from the past by rewriting history with lies. SAS understands that there wasn't any documentation or recordings from this interaction. Skip already had a show while SAS show was cancelled and he was fired. SAS wanted to be back on TV and did it with a low dollar amount contract. For SAS to say that Skip "needed" him and presented this one-sided story in 2022 as if Skip was on his knees "begging" him as SAS had left Skip hanging there for days would have my heated too! And SAS said this PUBLICLY that we never heard of this out of left field version of this story before.

I agree. There may be some revisionism on both sides and people mixing events and when it happened. The show had it's best or most memorable era with those two together. Maybe they both needed each other, Stephen A. did not have many TV options and Bayless wanted a consistent cohost/debater to increase ratings (even if ratings were already good). It worked out for both and both went on to be even more successful, I think due to the success they had together.

I was a print journalist for an LA daily newspaper at the same Skip was making his bones as a sportswriter for the LA Times. He’s a talented and smart journalist, and much respect for his body of work and sustained stardom in the media. That said: 1) he’s tone deaf to spotlight this beef as something so agonizing given what the average person is dealing with as the economy is poised to slide further into disrepair, and 2) the Cowboys will ultimately be irrelevant next NFL season. Much success going forward, despite your current pain, Skip.

SAS was right, First Take used to come on ESPN2 for a reason. Now it's on the main channel, which happened AFTER SAS joined. Skip, you either asked him to be apart of the show to make it better or you didn't. History suggests that happened.

yeah i mean when it was cold pizza barely anyone watched. theres a reason they has SAS come on as a guest debater like twice a week, everyone was talking about those shows. i think skips real issue is SAS made it sound like skip begged him to be on the show. when SAS wasnt there it still got ratings so its not like it was about to be taken off the air without him but having him be a part of it definitely made it more popular.

the main channel thing seemed to be part of the ESPN pivot from playing live sports on espn (they used to have sports going from 9am-night) to more debate. You could be totally right that SAS made the show much better ratings wise but the main channel pivot was more from a overall content shift by ESPN

The way I remember the story is it was crazy Woody Paige that made 1st & 10 hot while Skip got his tv sea legs. After Paige went back to the Denver Post, Cold Pizza was cancelled and 1st & 10 became 1st take, it took a while, but Skip made that show gain traction. By the time Stephen A. Smith came along the show was already very popular.

I didn't really take it as a compliment how SAS said it. He painted a picture that the whole reason First Take became #1 was because of himself, that Skip couldn't do anything with the show without him, that the show was unsuccessful and ESPN wanted change. None of that is a compliment to Skip and its also not how I remember the show being back then either. Its just SAS trying to take all the credit for himself.

He was saying how Skip started it FIRST with First Take, or what it was called in Philly. ESPN took it up and had him doing debates sometimes, and it seemed interesting to the board and wanted them to have that be the main focus of the show. They did that, but the ratings were not a high as expected and they wanted a co star to make it more impactful. Skip thought of Stephen A and asked him, and Stephen A agreed. He was literally saying that Skip gave him his break he needed. There was no shade thrown whatsoever

All I know is, I knew Skip before Stephen A 🤷‍♂️... Not taking anything away from him, I know he was covering NBA and was also in Philly before that. But Skip put him on the forefront. I remember loving First Take when they had Skip, Jay Crawford, Dana Jacobson and a rotating debate guest. FT in the morning, Stuart Scott on SC, then finish off later in the afternoon with Max, Wiley and Beads on SN... That was back when ESPN was truly great
