I hope so but I doubt it. From Skip’s logic, “What are we going to talk about?” Rick hates to listen about sports stories, and Skip hates to listen to cooking stories. And both likely hate reminiscing about their past upbringing. SO…what are they going to talk about that they can’t already google about each other? It’s really sad, but that’s what likely motivates both to stay apart.

@@louiearmstrong... Very true. I'm sure they both have families they can talk about. Catch up on what their nephews, nieces, cousins, grandkids are doing. It doesn't even have to be about themselves, just "How's everyone doing?" I'm sure they both might have a relative or two that would LOVE to get "tips" from their uncles. It doesn't even have to be about themselves. Time also tends to mellow people out and start to realize the commonality within each other. There's more to life than just sports and cooking. It sounds like Skip needs to branch outside of sports. Rick seems more laid back and mellower of the two. I hope they set aside their differences for a bit and realize those differences are what makes them who they are and just accept it.

I’ve been watching Skip for years and hearing this truly put in prospective how great his career is. He went from that bunk bed, to becoming a famous newspaper writer, to covering some of the best Football teams of the 80’s and 90’s to being on the best ESPN show (rated wise) in Cold Pizza/First Take and now is on Undisputed with Shannon. He did all that with having drunks as parents and barely being at home. That’s truly impressive

I’ve been going through a very similar situation with my little brother (who’s 3 years younger than me). I’m 35 now and we don’t speak anymore because the last 15 years we had nothing in common and family issues got into the way of us having a healthy relationship. This story completely resonates with me because although we’re two very different people and never speak to one another, I miss, love, and proud of him everyday. So if you have a sibling(s), cherish them as much as you can. It hurts just writing this. Thank you though Skip for telling this story. 👍🏻

I have a similar story. My dad was a hopeless alcoholic when I was growing up in the '60s, he was a WWII veteran, an infantry sergeant, who had watched helplessly as his company was slaughtered by the Germans. He was captured and spent three years in German POW camps. He suffered severe PTSD for the rest of his life. He and my mother had 4 children together, growing up in a deeply dysfunctional family. It wasn't just my father, it was my mother too. And yet all four of us went to become successful professionals. Neither of my parents went to college, but we kids all got college degrees. My older sis, the oldest of us four, had a career in the National Park Service and held several positions in which she was the first woman to achieve them. My younger sis became a broadcast journalist when the profession was still dominated by men. Unfortunately she was killed on the job when she was just 24 in 1982. I have a younger brother as well. We have not achieved the fame of the Bayless Brothers, but who cares, we all made something out of our lives coming from a very less than ideal family situation.

Been wondering about Skip’s relationship with his brother for a while now as someone who is a big fan of sports and also into cooking. Threw me through a loop when I found out Rick was his brother. Really sad that they never connected during childhood like that. I get the different interests part making it hard, but I would hope both are happy at where they are in life and could connect with one another now as maturer adults. Shout out to both of them for overcoming the trials and tribulations of their youth to rise to the top of their respective fields though. Pretty incredible.

The regret my father has not being able to reconcile with his father about being abandoned, tears at him even 30 years later. Skip loved sports, but “Ricky” loved cooking and the family business. Which is likely why his parents attached to Rick more than Skip, who would rather obsess about sports. *This illustrates how failure to communicate is more damaging to relationships than harsh words.*

This has been embedded in my oldest head since day 1. He's 18 now, the other two boys are 14 & 12. My babygirl is 7. I grew up in foster care, 7 siblings in different states. Our grandmother taught us about sibling love no matter how far we were. I spread that to mines. At the end of the day they are all they have & they are each other's family & friends before anyone.

You have made me think about so many parallels to my own life growing up in an awful environment (finding my brother after he had taken his own life when I was 16) and yet making something very special and meaningful out of my life. Mostly out of sheer determination and - I was so lucky to be borne smart. I have been a fan of your brother for years and I am now an even bigger fan of yours Mr. Bayless. I have followed both Skip and Rick for decades as I'm a Chef and a sports fan. I never knew they were brothers and definitely was not aware of the back story. You are both great in your own ways and if it's meant to be you can have a future relationship but it's OK if that never comes to fruition.

I went through a similar situation. I grew up in a very volatile household. My father was schizophrenic and he was a madman. I avoided coming home out of fear and joined the military as soon as I was 17. I escaped that environment but left my brothers and sisters behind. I didn't realize that they felt abandoned by me. It was flight or flight. My father was beating me up. I didn't see him hurt my younger siblings. So I didn't feel that I was doing something bad at the time. To this day we are not on speaking terms due to my decision. After listening to Skip describe his situation I can see their side. It's really tragic all the way around. I am happy to see that both Skip and Rick are thriving. But it is sad that they are not on speaking terms.

I've seen that guy on the food network. Didn't know they were brothers though. Lot of respect for you doing this. It takes guts to lay your soul bare. I had a strange relationship with my brother also. He was 10 years older and died last year of lung cancer. We had a totally different view on everything and weren't close. Loved him, but often didn't really like him. I did all the stuff that needed to be done to settle his affairs but have no real fond memories. My Dad died the year before and we were very close. I think of he and my Mom often.

I'm glad Skip is FINALLY acknowledging his siblings.....the sad part is his sister tried to get him to be a part of her family's life. She has two wonderful children that Skip never even acknowledged.....I think it's great he seems to be making amends, but his sisters kids (his niece and nephew) deserve better from him. She was a wonderful person, educator, wife, and mother, and unfortunately lost that battle with cancer after 4 or 5 years of fighting

What an incredible story. I didn't know your brother was Rick. He is indeed a famous master chef. You both have things in common, like how both of came into national prominence or share your experiences on the road to success. Also, the people you've met along the way and the people who have impacted your the most in life. How being renown has changed your life. You know life is very short and before you know it, you could miss out on opportunities to get to know your brother. Do you want the same thing that happened to your sister, happen to your little brother? Invite him over for thanksgiving (but have it catered). You would be amazed at the conversations you could have with him over a fine bottle of wine. Having so many regrets is not the way you want to end your life.

That’s a great idea. But to be honest, I think it’s possible we’d get a different story and history from Rick. What made me think that is when Skip said he also didn’t have a relationship with his sister, but that his sister and Rick were close. (And it sounds like Rick was closer with the mom, too.) Plus, Skip keeps saying that his brother and sister probably never forgave him for in essence abandoning them with the mess of the home life. But if all Skip had done was go to college upon graduation (just 2 years ahead of Rick), that doesn’t seem like abandonment that an adult Rick would still be resentful over. So there seems to be something more. Maybe Skip really did basically move out during high school (staying at his friends’ and girlfriend’s homes, like he said), and Rick and his sister felt Skip just bailed for all of high school and thereafter, and never looked back for them once in college. Just a hunch, but I think if Rick were telling this story, there would be a different explanation for their estrangement than just not having anything in common. But who knows? Anyway, I enjoy both of their “products,” if you will. Hopefully they will find whatever forgiveness and reconciliation is needed, before it’s too late in this world.

well he did leave him in a mess....thats just a fact. You cant really blame Skip but he did leave his younger siblings behind in a bad situation. There are many older siblings that are forced to act like parents to their brothers and sisters. This happens all the time, but just because they go above and beyond doesnt mean you should judge Skip for looking out for himself.

As the father of an only child, I explained to my daughter that there is no guarantee that siblings will be close. I haven't spoken to my brother in 5 years. Growing up we were three years apart and except for elementary school, we were never in the same school together in our teenage years and we ran in different circles. This video made me realize that, while sad, it's a common tale.

As a man its very tough growing up without a father figure and having to figure it all out on your own. Sometimes i wish things were different but not everyone gets along i guess. Can’t wait until i have kids of my own so i can do things different and have a close relationship with them.

Are you the older or younger child? I'm an older brother and that's how its been with my little brother though ive been willing to hang out and do whatever. It just happens but thats the lesson I took from this is what your first sentence said. You never know how siblings will be with eachother. It messes a lot of us up because family is supposed to be important than anything else. At least that's how we're raised.

Right?!? I'm just sitting here like... everyone that works at the restaurant I cook at loves sports! In fact, just like their dad, I'm a cook at a BBQ restaurant (I also wake up at 4 to make ribs), and to me BBQ and sports just go hand in hand, so it's so bizarre to hear that there's this huge divide. Literally, all I watch on RU-vid all day are basketball or cooking videos, so I just find it so strange that this was this huge barrier for them. That all being said, I remember what it was like being a kid, and how your whole personality is so fragile, and differences like that can seem so huge, so I guess it makes sense that when you compound that with being raised in such a dysfunctional home, it adds up to this separation. I actually feel like I relate to Skip (and Rick) a lot now too, cause I also have family that I have no relationship with, for reasons that make sense to me, but probably seem like they would be minor to other people.

I once met Rick Bayless at a charity dinner he guest hosted and I had the pleasure to cook with him. Despite looking just like Skip I never made the connection they were related. It was probably Rick’s quiet and calm demeanor that threw me off them being related😂. Despite only meeting him once he left a lasting impression on me ,he seemed like a very kind and generous human.

I have never seen a video by Skip but I couldn't stop watching. Everything was well told. I am not the oldest of siblings; I am third born. Not every sibling relationship has a connection among 4. Parents had a part in this. I have watched the cook Rick maybe 2 times. Both are very talented. It would be great if these brothers could celebrate together.

Honestly, knowing about Skip’s home life growing up really provides some incredible context into the man and what drives him. The fact that they both found and created their incredible success coming from such an unstable and chaotic environment as children is nothing short of remarkable. It also doesn’t surprise me that Skip was the “outcast” of the family either, as he has embraced that point of view and mentality when it comes to his debate shows. That all said, thank you for sharing this Skip. Personally, I really enjoy hearing about his life and how he allows us a small peak behind the curtain.

I understand Skip. My older brother is the same way. We have never been close at all and when we communicated it was always me reaching out to me. He is 7 years older than me and he treated me with the little brother syndrome(that is where an older sibling always treats the younger sibling terribly because they think that they will always be smarter or more successful ). And ive accomplished as or more than he has. So now that he is not even responding to my texts checking on him I am just wishing him well and letting him be. Remember just because someone is your brother or sister doesnt mean you will get along or even like them.
