Skip Caray calls the 9th inning, 1992 NLCS Game 7

Skip Caray, the iconic Braves broadcaster, and Joe Simpson call the bottom of the ninth inning of game 7 of the 1992 NLCS vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates on the Braves Radio Network. The Braves rallied to overcome a two-run deficit and advance to the World Series for the second straight year, and with their magical comeback, also heralded a new era of 20+ years of losing baseball for the Buccos. Apologies for the marginal (at times) audio quality.

My son was 10 in 1992. He had fallen asleep around the top of the 8th. I woke him and the start of the bottom of the ninth. I told him, son we have 3 outs to score three runs. What then unfolded was a memory that has bonded us like welded steel since that night. Braves win indeed.

Skip Caray, Ernie Johnson, and Pete Van Wieren were the soundtrack of my childhood summers. I am a Braves fan from long ago. It's not just the final play, but the entire inning is the absolute best work of Skip's (should be in the hall of fame) career. The way he built the tension of the inning and the payoff of the final play - it's hard not to tear up listening to this. Skip was one of a kind.

You are right--no one had a quicker wit than Skip Caray. I don't know if you saw it or remember it--but, one night Skip and Darrell Chaney were set to announce a game. Their microphones were hot, but, they didn't know they were already on the air for TV. Chaney, a nut by any measure, and Skip were discussing how to fill air time because the team was so bad. The Braves were horrible in those days. So, Chaney says--"I'm just going to sit here and eat my popcorn." Skip looks up and sees the light on and says without a flinch, " Hello, folks, This is Pete Van Weiran and Ernie Johnson. We'll be back in a moment." Skip Caray had no equal.
@ryanhallwrites
@ryanhallwrites 7 лет назад
HA! I think Chaney was a little before my time. That's hilarious though! And I can totally hear Skip doing that. Sure he was a world class wit, but he was also damn good at what he did.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Like I said in my post above I grew up in Marietta in the 80's. I have listened to this maybe a hundred times, and I get choked up from all the memories every single time. Skip Caray was Atlanta Braves baseball in those days. It was his wit, his sarcasm, and the man just loved what he did. Speaking of his sarcasm, who could forget when Skip would pretend to know the hometown of every fan who caught a foul ball. " A young man from Marietta just made a fantastic catch on that foul ball folks." He had that kind of ... i am who I am ....take it or leave it....witty humor that just made the games fun to watch and listen to. Skip Caray was and is a legend in Atlanta. In my opinion he will always be remembered for two things. Number one being this game in 92 and secondly what he brought to and added to the broadcast each and every game he called.

I was at this game with my wife and 7-year old son. We had 3 tickets to the game - two on the last row of the center field upper deck and one in the lower deck on the 8th row from the field, looking straight down the 3rd base line. We parked our kid in the good seat and kept an eye on him with binoculars from center field. (Wow - I wouldn't dream of doing that today! ) A few may remember that this game had a delay early on because one of the umpires had chest pains and had to leave. As the game wore on and the Braves were down 2-0, many people started to leave. That opened up seats in the lower deck and my wife and I both migrated down there which is where we were for the 9th inning. As the rally began, everyone began banging on the seats at every pitch. The roar of the drumming of the seats was deafening. I have the vivid memory of watching David Justice cross the plate to tie the game and thinking - "we aren't losing anymore" and then watching right down the 3rd base line as Sid Bream "charged" home. When he was signaled safe (on Barry Bonds' slightly errant throw from center field) the place went wild. I remember looking out at Barry Bonds just hunched over in his own personal "agony of defeat" while the Braves and their fans hugged, screamed and high-fived. Nobody wanted to leave. We took a MARTA bus to the MARTA train station and the bus literally rocked back and forth as we left Atlanta Stadium. As far as I know still the only time in baseball history a league pennant has been won where a team went from losing to winning the pennant with the single swing of a bat. One of the best memories of my life - and our son still cherishes it as well. And I miss Skip Caray. He was a class act. So glad this clip is available.

John Geoffrion it was the only time in post-season in a winner-take-all game where there was a game-winning hit in which he would have ended the team's season if he had made an out. Bobby Thomson's home run was technically considered regular season--those best of 3 series before divisional play were considered part of the regular season. There were other post-season walk-off hits but they either weren't in winner-take-all games (like Carter's home run in Game 6 of '93) or were with the game already tied.

@DaDitka
@DaDitka 11 месяцев назад
I'm not sure if this has been told here or somewhere else, but apparently, many years later Van Slyke was interviewed about this. Van Slyke said that just before Cabrera got the game-winning hit, he signaled to Bonds to move a step or two towards him, because he thought Cabrera would hit it there. Bonds responded with the "international peace hand gesture," If you get my drift, so Van Slyke said to himself, "Fine, stay there." Cabrera then proceeds to hit the ball almost right to the spot where Van Slyke thought he would hit it, and the rest is history. If Bonds had not been the egotistical a--hole that he is, it is unlikely Bream scores on that hit. The game would still have been tied, but Pittsburgh maybe gets out of the inning and who knows what happens... But you will need to check that out for yourself, as I could have the details wrong.

Skip Caray was one of the greats. Through all of his humor, his sarcasm, his knack for knowing exactly where each person who caught a fly ball hailed from (And a fan from Cartersville comes away with that fly ball), he had a a way of painting ever single pitch with drama and passion. He was a Braves fan and didn't care who knew. He could make anyone feel exactly every ounce of emotion that every player, coach, and fan felt in that stadium every game. Man I miss this guy. I had listened to the game at work, and pulled into my driveway at the beginning of the bottom of the 9th. I was despondent, especially after the Braves dismal performance in the two previous games. When Skip narrated the last play, and said "Braves WIN!" over and over, I felt like my radio was melting. I got out of the car and started jumping and screaming. I lived in Tallahassee FL at the time, yet still, I heard screams and whoops and hollers from all around the neighborhood. "Andy Van Slyke is sitting on his glove". Amazing call. Still the greatest sports moment of my life. Thank you Frankie, Sid...and Skip.

Zack Pace amazing memory no doubt. One thing that is kinda sad about the van Slyke image is what he himself said about that moment. The center fielder is supposed to be kind of the outfield "captain" so to speak, and that means among other things, being listened to when he makes suggestions about where to play for the other outfielders. Van Slyke later said that right before that pitch, after seeing Cabrera pull the previous ball hard but foul, he motioned to Bonds in left field (never known as a team player to begin with) to shift over a few steps, and he claims Bonds actually gave him the finger and ignored his suggestion. I'm sure that shot of van Slyke sitting on his glove included the thought going through his mind "if that asshole had taken my suggestion, he actually might have thrown Bream out at the plate."

I have been a life long braves fan... and I mean since I was born in 77 and went through a lot of rough years in the 80s. My dad would take us to Fulton county stadium for summer vacation every year for a week during a braves home stand during the 80s and it was always against the Astros for some reason. Great memories. During this game I went to bed after the 8th inning in tears, literally inconsolable, blubbering like a baby and I had just turn 15... I remember this moment like it was yesterday. My dad came busting into my bedroom screaming and hollering.. "Get up, get up, get your ass out of bed boy!!! They won, they won, they won..." I truly thought he was messing with me, I I tore out of bed anyway, and ran to the living room in my underwear.. just in time to see the 100th replay. Keep in mind this was years and years before DVR or the internet and I could not believe what I was seeing. My dad and I both went nuts and were losing our minds... we were running around the living room scream at the top of our lungs and high fiving each other and hugging. Moments later my mother came running in with her night gown thinking the house was on fire or we were being robbed or something awful had just happened to one of us. She could care less about sports and to this day doesn't understand why were went balistic. True fans will understand out sheer joy and uncontrollable excitement. This is one of the best memories that I have ever had in my entire life. We stayed up and watched the post game celebration and continued watching on sportscenter... My dad I still reflect on this game from time to time and it always brings a smile to our faces... #ForTheA

Wow, memories. I was at that game, it was like it was yesterday. Can't believe it's been almost 24 years. I was single at the time and I took my brother. We were sitting with some co-workers of mine who left at the top of the 9th, I kid you not. They didn't want to watch the Braves lose it. I jokingly, said, "you can't leave, they're going to come back!" So suddenly the momentum was with the Braves. You could feel it. The place was crazy. I remember the excitement of the pinch runners and the feeling of being a team. Francisco Cabrera hitting the line drive and Sid Bream galloping home. I remember praying so hard. There were some Pirate fans sitting in front of us and when we won and during all the commotion, they were just gone. I didn't see them get up and walk out. The deafening screams probably went on for 20 minutes at least. Strangers were hugging while jumping up and down. LOL. The place was rocking. I also saw the Braves win the World Series in 95, but that game didn't compare, really, as far as excitement goes.

I had the pleasure to be a boy in Baltimore and experience the "Oriole Magic" years 1979-83 and it was absolutely wonderful. The Orioles would win games like this routinely and it shaped my love of baseball. Then, I move to Atlanta in 1990 after a stint in the Army and found myself wanting a taste of National League ball. This was before Inter-league play and going to Braves games in 1990 were easy. No one else went. There were times where I could clearly hear Tommy Lasorda cursing in the dugout way down the left field corner because it would be 3,000 people there. But something funny happened in the 2nd half of 1990. The Braves started winning. The diehards at the stadium, the same people I would see nightly were talking and we all could see it. We could see a transformation taking place right before our eyes. David Justice won Rookie of the Year, Tom Glavine was pitching much better, then the Braves signed Terry Pendleton and started bringing up these kids from the minors and the stage was set. I remember I believe in was The Sporting News picked the Braves dead last again, and I said to my group of baseball lovers, ain't no way this team is finishing last. Hell, I think they can challenge the Dodgers. (Real baseball fans can see it coming together, a lot of times before the people who get paid to tell us about the team) 1991 was wonderful, Braves win the Division on the last day, out pitch the Pirates in the NLCS, but fall 1 run short in a EPIC 7 game World Series against Minnesota. But if you asked me 1992 and this game, symbolizes everything about that time in Atlanta! I will NEVER forget Skip Carrys call. Skip had many classic calls durring that time. One that comes to mind is David Justices 2 out Grand Slam in the top of the 9th late in 1991 with the Braves desperately trying to hold off the Reds and keep pace with LA. That was a tremendous moment, and one of those things where you just know something special is happening and you should get on board. Nothing like Pennant Fever Baseball. It can engulf and totally galvanize a city, and it did just that. It was truly a great time in my life and I can replay tjis moment everyday and it will never get old.

I think I remember that Justice homer. Was that at Riverfront? Against Rob Dribble? Those mid to late 80s teams were so disappointing. Biggest thing to happen at the stadium back then was when the Mets would come to town and everyone would slowly chant "Darrrrrylllllll." During radio and TBS telecasts I would hear the stadium vendor that barked. I always assumed that guy started with the barking because of Len Barker who had played for the Braves in the early 80s

It wasn’t a GS. It was a 2-run HR off of Dibble after the Braves were down 6-1 to Cincinnati and Jose Rijo. They battled back and Justice hit a 2-run HR off of Dibble in the 9th(BRAVES LEAD! BRAVES LEAD!! BRAVES LEAD!!!) October 2, 1991. Earlier that year in Cincinnati, Atlanta battled back against the Reds and won the game after a clutch HR late. Anyone know who it was that hit THAT HR? It was one Francisco Cabrera.

@GGE47 3 года назад
@@bigeric1030 I remember the latter game. I can pick up WSB at night and can't remember why I wasn't watching on TV. Cabrera's homerun tied the game and stayed in the game to catch. It went 15 innings and Cabrera hit another HR to put the Braves ahead and held them in the bottom of the 15th to win. I saw Cabrera as a Richmond Brave and a number of others too many to name before going to Atlanta. Knowing how good Cabrera could hit I was hopeful he would come through in this game and he did. The National League pennant for the 2nd straight year.

I dont care what anyone says , that was the greatest call in the history of sports: There is a lot of room in right-center field, if he hits one there, we can dance in the street..swung line drive left field, one run is in here come bream, the trow to the plate.........braves win!" That is a classic call in MLB history!

I remember my dad going out to the garage to sit in the car and listen to Skip instead of the TV broadcasters. Also, that man could hear the game through the most static over the radio ever. Listening to a cassette tape about the 92 Braves over and over made Skip's voice more familiar to me than many of my relatives.

As a Braves' fan this is one of the moments that lives on forever. Never get tired of reliving this. My two boys had gone to bed, fallen asleep, when Bream scored I hit my head on the ceiling, screaming my lungs out. My wife says, quiet, you'll wake the boys. I replied, no chit Sherlock, and I ran down the hall to their room screaming as loud as I could, Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!

I was there that night. Seventh row behind the Pirate dugout. We were there as a result of my law firm's flippance toward the Braves. Brent & I were there, and while he wanted to leave at the end of the 8th, I didn't budge. One more inning bro, c'mon. Then, Pendleton led off with a double. Then a walk. Another walk. Ron Gant nearly hitting a grannie, got Terry home, so it's now 2-1. It was game on then, the rest is history. I've never experienced anything like it in my life, even sense some 30 years later. EPIC.

LMAO...I know what you mean! My wife was at work that night, so I had put our two young kids to bed when the game was early. Agonized most of the game with Drabek having a 2-0 lead into the ninth. That ninth. When Sid was called safe, I was yelling at the top of my lungs and jumping around on the furniture, sofa, to love seat, to easy chair to sofa...and my son and daughter came out looking so confused...then started to jump on the furniture with me! Next day, they told their mother that daddy was jumping on the furniture and let them jump on the it as well, so I got a bit of a butt chewing, but it was well worth it! LOL

Tiger WarEagle14 I was there in 1993 when Justice hit a 2 run HR in the 8th of a game that Maddux ended up winning 2-1 in 1:56 on 94 pitches for a complete game. When Justice hit that HR, the crowd was ELECTRIC! I saw them lose Game 4 of the 1993 NLCS at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, due to a couple of terrible calls by the umpires, and the place went NUTS towards the umpires and then when the Braves tried mounting a rally in the 9th. Again, that place was ELECTRIC! The last game before the All Star break in 1995, I watched Fred McGriff hit a walk-off HR against San Francisco’s Rod Beck, who was among the elite closers at that time. Not only was the stadium ELECTRIC, but the crowd walking out towards the various parking lots was so ELECTRIC that we all started doing the “Tomahawk Chop” into the sultry summer night in Atlanta! I can’t imagine what the old stadium was like on this night! I know my parents and I woke my sister up from the screaming and celebrating after Sid got the “safe” call and she was so scared by all the noise that it took her 2 hours to get back to sleep!

The sad part about this is that in today's game this play definitely would've been challenged by the Bucs (even though Bream was clearly safe). As a result, some of the euphoria would've been somewhat anti-climatic.

Skip Carey, Ernie Johnson and Pete van Wieren was quite the broadcast team when I started listening to Braves on our rural AM station in the '60s. It was always on; in the house, in the yard when we washed our family cars and when we hung out at the lake all day picnicking and boating. Growing up literally in the middle of nowhere there was a lot of free time to fill and the Braves broadcasts were about as predictable and dependable as it could get. We were lucky if we got to watch them because we only had the three big TV stations to listen watch with finicky reception. The fact those guys were able to draw an audience and keep you entertained while the infrastructure and eventually superstation of what TBS, TNT and the Superstation built per Ted's plans was a testament to their amazing talent as broadcasters but, moreso, as entertainers. Adding Joe Simpson and Don Sutton later on and eventually easing Skip Carey, JR into the broadcast rotation we're also great moves. I tell you Don Sutton had one of the most recognizable and smooth easy listening radio voices I ever heard.easy going and keeping the mood light. In fact, as they continued rotating the guys TV->radio->TV, etc I would select my audio. If Don was covering on radio I would turn down the TV volume and watch the action while listening to Don broadcasting on radio. It's a trick I learned a long time agowhen Larry Munson was the voice of the Ga Bulldogs - watch on TV but listen to Larry. We even went to Ga games wearing radio headphones watching live as Larry did his thing on radio.

I was a kid who couldn't bear to watch so i went to my room and left it on the tv in the living room. I turned on my radio and listened and knelt by the speaker because I couldn't play it loud and wake up my little sister. When Cabrera hit the single I jumped up and ran to the living room in time to see Sid slide in safely and at that point all bets were off on sis staying asleep and I went nuts. I woke up everyone in the house and all I could say over and over again was "we stole it from them!" We stole it in the 9th!" Great great memories.
