He'd be depressed/dejected once again 3 months later in Game 7 of The 1992 NLCS when The Braves rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the 9th inning after Francisco Cabrera's 2 run single ended The Pirates season (they wouldnt have another winning season for 30 years). Van Slyke is sitting on his glove in the outfield as The Braves are mobbing Sid Bream after he slide into home plate just ahead of the catcher's glove after Barry Bonds threw it from left field.
That pitch aside, I feel like Alejandro Peña is PROFOUNDLY underrated. He was great with the Braves, and he had a 3.11 ERA in 15 years overall. I mean... Wow.
Living in Oklahoma, years ago I had a rare trip to Atlanta. I took my then 10 year old son to "The Ted" and walked the parking lot that still had the Fulton County Stadium markings. We visited the Hank Aaron 715, the Sid Bream home plate and the Otis Nixon wall. He didn't understand why I was getting teary-eyed.
Never forget where I was when I saw this. Home from college, folding laundry, Nixon makes the catch as Mom crosses the living room, "Did he really just do that? Did he actually take his home run away? Can he do that?!" Yes, Mom, he can.
I was at the game, also. It was an amazing experience! When Van Slyke hit the ball, we all knew it was gone. There was a collective sigh in the stands. Then, when Otis caught it, there was complete and utter pandemonium! Best live sports moment of my life.
@ Bob Larson4748 - the Pirates should have known after that play by Otis, that it just wasn't going to be their year, as they would find out three months later, Lol. 🤣
