that #1 defense stat is misleading. if you give up a lot of yards on returns etc the defense will have less yards to give up until they score. that means in total defense you’ll do better than someone with better special teams
@@StarWarsUniversity pretty sure they had the widest margin between total yards and yards allowed in nfl history though. That's a little more than fluky
Has the prettiest "ugly" mechanics the game will ever see. loved watching this man sling it, his trash talk, his fire. He deserved more. Thank you for the memories sir. Go take care of that huge family
well said bro, couldn't have said it any better, other than I'd like to see him give the Colts 1 more year, especially with how well they did this year, barely lost to the Bills
Insane!!! Packers had Favre and Rodgers at the same time . Only difference was , both Rivers and Brees were young at that time . Insane!!! 2 young elite quarterbacks on the roster at the same time . As a bears fan we can’t get one . Unbelievable!!!
@@supreme504 agree 100% I just think that by the time Matt Ryan finishes his career I don't really think he will ever win a championship in Atlanta and trust me that's my home team but he's going to end up with some crazy numbers when he retires same question will be if he can get in the hall of fame or not
As a Chargers fan, it was an honor to have Philip Rivers as our quarterback for 15 years, even if he didn't make it to a super bowl. I know for sure he will make it to Canton one day
@Bradley Taft Ware I think youre wrong is he isnt a victim of competing in an era where rules are created by the same organization that has a hall of fame to begin with. Ware I think youre also wrong is Brady, Brees etc all play in that same era. Ware you also might be wrong is in thinking that all the players in the hall of fame have won championships.
@Bradley Taft good thing no one cares what you think so hes going in regardless. "it is very easy throwing the football" - guy whos never thrown a football.
Rivers always had a trash O line with the exception of three years, never missed a game, finished top 5 all time in yards, competitions, and TD’s in a league where he had to deal with Peyton, Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Big Ben, Mahomes...he shredded the legion of boom and the Ravens in their absolute prime. Beat Mahomes in KC, beat Rodgers a few months ago...he beat the best and never missed a single game despite his paraplegic scrambling ability...unreal
@Kiki He beat all of those quarterbacks head to head brother. And some insane defenses. Spanking the raiders twice a year didn’t put him top 5 all time in numbers. He played with more HOF QB’s than any other time in NFL history man. Not winning a ring doesn’t reflect badly on him. He did his job better than most. His numbers and success speaks for itself.
@Kiki He's in the HOF cause you can't deny his numbers and milestones he's achieved. But I do agree that his other points are excuses for not winning. There's no shame to losing to those qb's, but you're just not on their level. So he's HOF just not in that class of top 10-20 qb's all time.
Phillip Rivers can't beat the Brady and the Pats in the playoffs yet Eli did twice. Do you even trust Rivers to go into Lambeau and beat Rodgers like Eli did?
Forever will be my favorite player of all time. Growing up in San Diego we didn't have a lot of success but he always showed up to play. He has my utmost respect, if you're from SD he probably has yours too, and I wish him nothing but the best going forward. Sad he didn't retire a Charger but happy that Indy welcomed him with open arms and treated him well
@@Amrase_ He was the best QB in the league in 2008 hands down. Highest passer rating, highest TD-INT ratio, highest YPA, 3rd most yards, 2nd highest completion percentage, etc. But Peyton Manning won MVP that year because the Colts went 12-4 while the Chargers went 8-8.
@@Amrase_ So many years Rivers placed not 3rd or 4th but SECOND to just ONE of Brady, Brees, Peyton, -- and he was better than Roethlisberger and Eli any season. That is why he was second in Pro Bowl QB ratings, about SIX times out of eight selections. The Hall of Fame is (also) about a body of work, What QB is in the HOF for one SB ring? And are you saying character means nothing? Because Rivers was famous for his fiery nature and unique language -- and walking tall. Or do you have to be a narcissist to be in the Hall of Fame?
@@majormarketing6552 there’s always gotta be a loser not everyone’s gonna win a championship people are weird he wasn’t bad tbh had great players to play against!
“Open the GATES and let the RIVERS flow” hope he gets in the HOF he even made me watch all of Indy games and was rooting for him to win that SB he is missing.
Unfortunately yes lol brees, Manning, brady, rivers, rothlisberger, Rodgers(has some more years) the great qbs of my childhood lol ima miss them. But Wilson, Watson, Jackson, Mahomes, Murray, Mayfield(He will be great i believe) Is a pretty good replacement group.
Add on your Josh Allen Trevor Lawrence? Justin Herbert Joe Burrow Jalen Hurts? This will be the GOLDEN ERA OF QBS most Quantity and Quality if u can do a Dynasty or anything close that'll be AMAZING
@@DuhCL0WN No need for question marks lol i didn't forget just at work so I'm tryna keep it short but most definitely they will be great too ima have a lot of fun watching football in my 20s
@@jackb750 Yea true but mostly these were the qbs that were there when i first started watching i was 5 years old when he got in the league and 8 when first seen him play. So i kinda threw him up there cuz hes old to me lol he still got it my 4th favorite qb lol
Phillip Rivers is a HOF--the fact that him and Dan Fouts never reached a SB with Chargers and Drew Brees winning one when he left show how ineffective the organization is-I see why Eli Manning refused to play for them
Yet ppl make blasphemous statements like saying Eli shouldn’t be in the HOF despite taking down one of the GREATEST teams in the modern football era and beating Brady 2x with a 4th quarter comeback. Rivers been to the playoffs more than Eli & could never lead his team to at least 1 SB appearance. Some of those teams rivers was on had potential but the playoffs are a different animal
Thank you for your season as a Colt. I wish you were still my QB1 at the start of next season. I hope your retirement is everything you ever wanted, and I hope you get a dadgum State Championship at your school your gonna coach. As a die hard colts fan who hated playing against you, I’ve come to appreciate and love seeing you in a Colts Uniform. Best of wishes Uncle Phil!!
@@Zigoutlaw33 Which has been the case with the Chargers since 1966, when Barron Hilton sold the team to Gene Klein and Sam Schulman, who ran the franchise into the ground in the late 60s and early 70s, and even considered moving it to Seattle.
I love that we have Herbert now BUT Rivers will always hold a place in the hearts of all Charger nation. Thank you for the amazing performance Philly Rivs! I only hate that our ownership (the worst in the league) NEVER gave you a chance to win it all. Spanos family is cheap, they don't care about winning, they don't care about their players or fan base. In spite of this, Philly Rivs showed up and balled out.
They are cheap they only get players on discounts- aka after injuries or undrafted players with a good season. They will never go after a top market player
This one hurt. Woke up to my phone blowing up about my boy Phil. I thought he was coming back for 1 more but 17 seasons for #17 is just as nice. Gonna miss rooting for you every Sunday since 06 and finally getting to watch you play live in 2018. Thanks for the memories PR17⚡️
As a lifelong San Diego fan, I am so grateful for what Phillip Rivers did for us. Man wanted to win more than anyone. He always played with guts and I wouldn't have wanted any other QB for the Chargers. Wish he could have won one but I still think he is one of the best ever.
Bruh there’s a handful of quarterbacks already in the hall of fame who did not come up clutch in the playoffs. Rivers is not only a hall of famer but he’s a first ballot
Based on what? He has passed for a lot yards and had a long career. And that is it. Not even close to an MVP, first choice All Pro etc. Passing leader? TD leader? QBR leader? TD/INT ratio leader? Rivers isn't even close.
I couldn’t agree any more with either statement. I am a raider fan. I’ve had the pleasure of watching Philip Rivers grow and be a very great player and in many of his years shred the raiders... I’m not afraid to admit that and I’m not gonna sit here and hate on what he achieved. He’s a damn good qb and played with a chip on him. Congrats on your successful career and enjoy retirement and your family
@@oscartirado8146 You colts fans are absolutely absurd- he took you to the post season nearly won a playoff game and “he did nothing for us” literally so ungrateful to your players, also deshaun Watson would Never go to the colts Lol
Philip Rivers has been on some loaded football teams and yet never got to a Super Bowl. Heading into the 2009 postseason, I was convinced that the San Diego Chargers were the best team in all of football. They ended up being one-and-done thanks to the New York Jets, who were just lucky to be there.
For several years they had the most talented roster in the League, but Norv Turner and that organization could never pull it together. I remember when they fired Marty Shottenheimer after going 14-2 in the regular season, but losing to the Patriots in the Divisional Round that it was gonna be rough for a few years.
One problem the Chargers had, and the Rams and even the Raiders had the same problem, was that home field advantage did not truly exist in Southern California, either in San Diego or Los Angeles, mainly because of the weather and the stadiums. There's a reason why all the Chargers' signature post-season wins have been on the road and their most crushing post-season losses have all been at home. A playoff game in San Diego was basically a neutral site game, and the same was true regarding the L.A. Coliseum when the Rams and even the Raiders played there, which made it harder for the Chargers, because they did not have the advantage that a home team normally enjoys for a post-season game.
SB’s don’t make you a great player, that’s a team achievement in a team sport, does anyone actually think Trent Dilfer is a better QB than Philip Rivers? Or Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino? Or Trent Dilfer is better than even Matt Ryan?
Rivers is right up there with the rest of the gun slingers. To win a Superbowl, you need close to perfection and commitment from the owner, right down to the cleaning service. Rivers always did his job with enthusiasm and excellence.
@HiiDE phillip's defense was stacked had castillo phillips merriman antonio cromartie all in their prime he played with eric weddle he had vincent jackson L.T Lorenzo Neal Antonio Gates Eli Manning never had as much offensive talent like Rivers had and Rivers didn't win any championships and Eli did twice rivers had a three headed monster in the backfield he had sproles l.t and michael turner I love rivers his attitude and how he argues with people but you cant compare the 2
Warren Moon is in the hall of fame, Dan Fouts also, they have the same amount of playoff wins , so based on that phillip rivers should be in the hall of fame.
@@michaelpolite3335 I honestly don't understand your comment. Moon, Rivers, and Fouts , basically all had the same career, so I guess throw rivers in there too.
Troy Aikman is my “you have to be this tall” bar. If Aikman gets in with 165 TDs and 141 INTs...then Rivers is definitely in the Hall of Fame. Football is a team sport...can’t hold it against a guy for not winning a championship.
Ironically enough I actually said to someone in school that year that the jets would beat the chargers lol I wasn’t even confident that it would’ve actually happened 🤣🤣🤣
So you’re saying Phillip hasn’t been good since the jets have been good? That means he’s mediocre at best. Give any average QB 17 years and I bet they have stats like his
All respect to Philip Rivers on his retirement but if I recalculate, Rivers Drafted 2004. Super Bowl 39 - Pats vs Eagles (Brady) Super Bowl 40 - Steelers vs Seahawks (Big Ben) 41 - Colts vs Bears (P. Manning) 42 - Pats vs Giants (Brady and E. Manning) 43 - Steelers vs Cards (Big Ben) 44 - Colts vs Saints (P. Manning) 45 - Steelers vs Packers (Big Ben) 46 - Pats vs Giants (Brady and E. Manning) 47 - the exception, Harbowl, Ravens vs 49ers 48 - Broncos vs Seahawks (P. Manning) 49 - Pats vs Seahawks (Brady) 50 - Broncos vs Panthers (P. Manning) 51 - Pats vs Falcons (Brady) 52 - Pats vs Eagles (Brady) 53 - Pats vs Rams (Brady) 54 - exception 2 Chiefs vs 49ers 55 - Could be Brady if he beats Rodgers. Shannon was off by one but it's scary still when you look at it. 15 of 17 Super Bowls and it took Flacco beating Brady in 2012 BARELY and a talent like Mahomes to win in 2020. It's nuts.
As a Chargers fan, we had great moments and humbling moments with Phil as our QB. Although Ben and Eli both have 2 rings each, Phil proved he was the better QB from that draft. It's somewhat bittersweet seeing both Drew and Phil retire after this season, and I wish them both well in their future endeavours. But without question Phil belongs in the HOF, he's earned it.
Very good player ok but "all time" great no. That's like saying Matt Ryam is an all time great. Ryan is a very good player like Rivers but thats about it.
He definitely going into the Chargers Hall of Fame. He will get in, just probably won't be first ballot. His numbers speak for themselves, and isn't Dan Marino in with his zero Superbowl wins?
@@Ah-ws9nm agreed you also can't blame the guy for being in a league with Peyton, Tom, and Big Ben. In his 17 seasons in 14 of them, those three guys won the AFC. If he was born 5 years earlier or later he'd def be one and we shouldn't hold that against him.
Normally I wouldn't give Skip and Shannon a second of my time but on this occasion I have to agree with them that Phillip is one of the best that ever played the game. He played the game well, didn't politicize the game, he didn't disgrace himself or the game.
Shannon hit me w that perspective lmao didn’t think about the afc being run by 3 guys 😂 and that drew and Eli not being in San Diego did wonders for their careers
I’d say the AFC was really run by 2 guys: Brady and Peyton Manning. I think another way of putting it is like this-we just saw Tom Brady run through Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees in the NFC this year. That’s the first time they had to go through Tom Brady to reach the Super Bowl-meanwhile, Rivers had to go through Brady AND Manning his ENTIRE career (though Rivers actually knocked off Manning twice in the playoffs in ‘07 and ‘08). I mean, it’s PUREL LY SPECULATIVE, but if Tom Brady and Peyton Manning were in the NFC, there’s a chance Aaron Rodgers and Brees might’ve never made a Super Bowl. Rivers was absolutely good enough to get to one, but it’s extremely hard when you have to go through Manning and Brady for 17 years. Also, let’s be honest, Rivers was not blessed with a good franchise lol-that makes it even more difficult. That’s leaves Big Ben..... don’t get me wrong, I think Ben is good, but I don’t think he’s INDIVIDUALLY as good as Rivers.... Ben being on a good franchise helped a lot with his success
I feel bad for Phillip rivers he never went to the superbowl but he was a good qb now he hc at a high school it's great that he can coach kids and pass on what he learned from his dad and begin in the NFL and doing something good for his community.
Rivers playing in the same conference against arguably the 2 greatest QB's of all time reminds me of those male tennis players who played in the Nadal, Djokovic, Federer era. Gonna be real tough to reach the pinnacle of your sport under these circumstances
@@karanpunj6888 You're joking right? Dame ain't getting past GS or LAL. Not to mention that the BBall HOF is MUCH easier to get in than the Pro Football HOF. Dame will get in based on his play, but he's not winning any rings unless he joins a super team. Rivers = Dame is a decent comparison.
@@DingoDIDeatmybaby bro are you high Gsw might not make the playoffs this year, this is Lebron’s last chance to win another ring Dame could just demand a trade if he wants. Philip Rivers was never as good at football as dame is a basketball
Did anyone mention the 2007 playoff game when the Chargers had the Patriots beat and let it slip away by trying to return an interception instead of falling on the ball and running out the clock?
@@copedigital Maybe he can be like Jimmy G. The colts seem to have most of the right pieces they can easily be back kinda like the Saints when i look at it
How can you say Phil Rivers ain’t a Hall of Famer. His statistics tell the story and absolutely nailed on for the HOF imo. Unfortunately you can’t pick your organisation or Offensive Line.
you know people say well he hasn’t done this or that or haven’t achieved enough to be in the hof you know how hard it is to even play as long as rivers and be the starter for that long
As a Chargers fan, I wish he didn't tbh. Every year I was hoping that they would go a different direction at QB. Real Chargers fans don't get woo'd by the stats of Phillip Rivers because we know how disappointing he actually is in those clutch situations. So so so many 4th qtr interceptions you could see it coming like time on a clock
HOF’er without a doubt! The man never missed a game in his career! Very hard to do as a QB, heck he even played on a torn acl! Just the way he played and the accuracy he had was incredible. Rivers is a superior talent to Ben roethlisburger and Eli manning even tho they have “rings”, yes it’s a team sport. His kicker always failed them in the playoffs multiple times, LT always hurt, terrible o-line surrounding him most his career and he still put up top 5 numbers, ever! He is top 5 in almost every major category in the nfl! How is that not hall of fame worthy? Lol Never seen a tougher qb with that much poise in a surrounding pocket about to collapse & the battles he went thru on such an inept organization run by spanos (worst owner ever)
Shannon put rivers in the same era with Brady , manning and Big Ben but forgot brees was in the same era, while complaining about people not giving enough consideration to great players that haven’t won a championship but didn’t include one of the top quarterbacks of the era 🤷🏿♂️. The Brees disrespect is disgusting.
Rivers belongs in the hof. Probably not first ballot. But the "transcendent talent" skip is talking about describes first ballot hofs. Rivers easily will make it in as a 2nd or 3rd ballot. Plus rings are more of a team thing rather than a player thing
# 8x Pro Bowler #5 Passing Tds #5 Career Completions # Passing Yards More passing yards than - Marino, Elway, Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Aikman, Eli , & Montana
Yea but those 2 were superior QBs to Rivers. But Rivers is a HOFer still........just not 1st ballot or 2nd ballot or 3rd ballot........he will get in eventually.
Good stuff Shannon. I agree completely. Football is a team game and a championship depends on the entire team. 21 other players plus backups need to perform at a high level to get to a championship.
