In this video I show you how I diagnosed a battery earth lead fault, removed fixed and refit it on a 1.9 PD TDI Skoda Fabia MK1 (99-07) which is similar to other VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda models

This is interesting, all i have done is that the t shaped clamps out and use small house clamps and they've held for a very long time :P
@HatBoyHarvey

You mean you just put a small extra clamp on the clamp? that would work of course, not sure I would like the aesthetics :)

It seems to me that the design is quite good having a top fixing bolt, but IMO needs to allow a bit more movement for wear :-)

Thanks for the video. Subscribed. I've just got a 2001 1.4 petrol, and I'm having a hard time starting it when it's "half cold", after a few hours at the mall. In the morning it starts ok. Running a diagnostic at Bosch Service next Tue. A mechanic has changed the lambda sensor, it has improved consumption, but the starting problem continues. :(
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 3 года назад
could be a number of things so you need to do one thing at once to eliminate each. If there is no dashboard warning lights that Is good, but can often help if they do appear. If you can replicate the fault when at the time of a diagnostic check, that would be best and is often a good starting point. If high Kms inspect head gasket, Check for vacuum leaks in induction system, clogged EGR/crankcase breather, clean the MAP sensor, make sure the air cleaner element/box is seated/sealed, fuel pump issue, Alt charging/battery/ground issue, oil/filter changed -----------

Hi mate thanks for your great videos 👍 have you ever had a problem with the abs module on the fabia 1.9 tdi? Got this problem abs light asr light on constant. power steering light intermittent. First it said front right abs sensor changed cleared codes but still came on checked checked with multi meter and all good took for a drive read code now saying 3 out the 4 abs/ speed sensor not working and not reading speed values on code reader so am thinking it’s the abs module but show no codes for that
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey Год назад
First check the ABS link-fuse under the bonnet. Your diagnostic first showed up a speed sensor - maybe trace the sensor lines back to their origin looking for chaffing/damage etc and connection issues. If you have vagcom you can perform a 'basic systems' service check to test ABS pump. Do you think it all started after rainy damp weather? Often this can affect the electrics. Have you messed with any electricals without disconnecting the ground neg lead off battery? As other lights are appearing it could be the connections to instrument binnacle or ECU. Brake light switch needs renewing if never changed.:-)

Thanks for the video HatBoyBarvey. How long should an alternator last on these 1.9TDi's and could you make a video on how to change one? Perhaps there are other video tutorials which are of more benefit than an alternator change, but just an idea really. Thanks
@HatBoyHarvey

Thanks, I refurbished mine a couple of years ago at about 110K as it wasn't charging. sadley this was before I got going with videos as that would have made a great one. Cost me about £40 a new rectifyer and all internals, which is better than a new and often unnecessary alternator...
@jimmymach6588

Before the Fabia I had a seat ibiza 1.9 tdi since 0km (1998). I sold it in 2019 with 21 years and never had an issue with the alternator or the voltage regulator with brushes. When the engine was on the battery voltage was always 13.9V or less. In my wife Chevrolet the battery voltage with engine on is about 14.5v, maybe drawing more current and with alternator life shortened.

Thank you for all the information you shared. Does that cable have a part number ? Is it worth replacing or just cleaning ? Also, are there other earth or ground cables that need attention ? I recall my renault had 2 ground cables connected to the engine, one of them was quite underneath and prone to rust.
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey Год назад
If yours is bad and can source a new OEM one, I would replace it. If it is not too bad then just clean it. skoda-parts.com sell it: 6Q0 971 235 B for 47 Euro + del. yes there are other earthing points, but I need to find them myself. there should be one to the engine, but I haven't paid attention for it. Researching the internet comes up with: behind battery, on strut tower below battery, on side member under centre console, in front of gearstick at base of LH 'C' pillar I need to look into these ;-)

This has just happened to my VRS, I have to jiggle the cable to get it to make contact again, every time it cuts out the radio and makes it go into SAFE mode EDIT: on further evaluation, my problem is the other side of the cable that creates a break in the circuit.

Nice. Could you advise me if a DQ200 mechatronic unit needs a oil change(after about 65000 to 70000km). The service center says it's sealed for a life time. if possible can you please do a video on this.
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 3 года назад
Has the 34F7 service recall been applied? These DSG boxes can have there oils changed and from what I have read would be advisable IMHO. There are 2 types, one for the megatronics which is a hydrolic oil and one for the gearbox oil. it is possible to do this yourself, but you need to know what you are doing, such as bringing the oil up to temp for correct level. Sorry I haven't done this.

I have one question. In Skoda rapid, while door locking time, one door remain opened. Can you tell me what are the possible problems?
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 3 года назад
Have a look at the wires behind the bellows by the hinge, they often fray. Does the indicator button move correctly? Check the power supply to the lock mechanism. The microswitch within the lock can also fail.

@@HatBoyHarvey indicator button moves correctly ...
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 3 года назад
@@motivationalquotes5267 which door is it? The fix is as above, but as an off chance, if it is a rear door try messing with the child locks to see if that does anything or spray a bit of contact spray in the lock catch might clear it. If nothing works then door panel off check/test electrical for power, replace the lock or the microswitch.

I have this issue on my ibiza, wiggling the earth cable would fix it, then it would start, I sanded all the connections and ground the connector down, still did it, so I just replaced the cable, which fixed it for nearly a week and then it happened again, wiggle the earth cable and it started. Any thoughts? Could it be the battery or live side, I park on a slight down hill and it had been raining, is it possible that water got in? I appreciate any help
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 2 года назад
How old is the battery? Check the battery voltage it should be around 12.6V. Turn the car on - is there a voltage drop? If so the battery is probably failing. Check the body side of the earth lead, it may be corroded or clogged with paint. You shouldn't be able to wiggle the earth lead on the terminal, it should be tight.
@somethingpanda123
@somethingpanda123 2 года назад
@@HatBoyHarvey it's tight, I mean wiggle the cable in a literal sense, grab the wire in the middle with index and thumb, little wiggle and its good to go, I put the lights on so I can see when it gets power again and it's not even a second after wiggling the cable. I've already checked body connection but I'll give another thorough look. The body connection also had a little plastic surround around it, not sure if that can interfere or anything. Also not sure how old the battery is but not new by any means and is a halfords one.
@somethingpanda123
@somethingpanda123 2 года назад
@@HatBoyHarvey it's also probably worth adding, the car has a bit of a lazy start, not massively but it's doesn't fire up right away.
