School's out! Well, it's half-term anyway. So let's celebrate the week off with a review of two classic ZX Spectrum games from Microsphere - Skool Daze and Back to Skool. Prototype sandbox games? Arcadey, puzzle-y type games? Or just a good excuse to twat a vicious headmaster in the face with a slingshot? You decide! Enjoy!

Played it in 1984 and never read any of what todo. Just played it and loved it, to have freedom to walk round doing what you like was as said the first love of sandbox games 🤗 A great big thanks for the video and the excellent memories it brought back Kim 🙏

I loved Wheelie, that feeling you got when you successfully landed a double bus jump for the 1st time. Put so many hours into the Skool games and never knew what to do, half the fun i reckon. Big thx Kim, awesome as always.

I hadn't heard of the Spectrum until a few years ago because I'm from the US and I didn't know anyone that had one when I was younger. Discovering this game a few years ago was a pure delight. School Daze is amazing! Thanks for the video!

+Jayson Gray Nice to see that even in the States people are still discovering the joys of golden-era, eight colour 'no way to make it pretty, best ensure it plays brilliantly' British microcomputer gaming! This machine formed the bedrock of my earliest experiences with computers of any sort (well actually the one I knew best was one of Sir Sugar's bastardized budget computers, but hey it was technically more capable than the old 'dead flesh keyboard' design) and I always thought of it all as a uniquely British thing. I know I'm rambling a bit pointlessly, so I'll just throw a recommendation or two at you and go. If Skool Daze is your thing try looking out for a Rom or tape of a game called 'Valhalla', which is equally sandboxy and abstruse. I can't get away from this comment without mentioning Firebird's excellent 'Viking Raiders' either (I didn't even notice the common theme until I got this far) which is nothing at all like Skool Daze, but offers fiendish four-player arcadey shenanigans and might well be the oldest turn-based strategy/puzzle games to not also be as boring as a period docudrama.

The Speccy was released in the US under the Timex brand but it was not successful. However, it was massive in the UK (and if I recall, did okay in some parts of South America) and went toe to toe with the C64 primarily and, to a lesser extent, the Amstrad CPC in the early to mid 80's. The Spectrum was a very British thing... I'm not surprised it bombed in the US.

Sir Clive almost popped a vein when he found out that more school children were using his Spectrum to play games than to learn maths and coding. He never really grasped the fact that Spectrum sales were largely driven by kids saying "Please Dad. Buy me a Spectrum. I promise I will use it for my homework." (I know because I was one of them :-) Also he never really understood that practically the only people learning coding were the people writing the games. Long live the Speky, the coders and Sir Clive.

I played the C64 version. It looked almost identical to the Spectrum version, making it easily the most eye-searing C-64 game ever made.

These games made the speccy for me, sandbox on the speccy, just class and so much nostalgia here. Thanks kim and class video mate.

I read up on the 1990-1995 gaming renaissance of the Spectrum in my country (Czechoslovakia > The Czech Republic) due to the popularity of these low cost computers in the East and the fact they were making local clones. It's interesting though it's a topic that gets barely any attention period.

Good stuff as per usual, Kim. I bloody loved playing Skool Daze with my mum back in the day (since I sort of adopted her Speccy), I had no idea there was a sequel, I might have to try tracking down a copy.

We had an actual Mr. Creak at my school, but he was the French teacher. Right sarcastic bugger too :D But it's amazing that this game is so good, yet the official Grange Hill game was a pile of shit. They even got the main character's sprite the wrong way around in the Amstrad port, so he's constantly moonwalking.

+Larry Bundy Jr I have played the official Grange Hill game way more than it is probably advisable to. Me and my dad used to play it all the time!

In some ways I always view this as the precursor to Rockstar's BULLY. I will never forgive them for never releasing it on the Commodore 64. UPDATE: apparently it was on the C64 but dunno how as I wanted it really badly I remember. Could have been disk only - although unlikely or got a terrible review in Zzap! 64. And I never knew there was a Skool Daze 2 : Back To Skool.

I used to love these games; they were so unique. Did get annoying that you could get told off for being beaten to the ground/knocked off a school-desk seat, or even for jumping (“You are not a kangaroo”?!? WTF?!?), but by and large the game was very enjoyable. _Back to Skool_ was a more-than-worthy sequel, too. Shame that in the sequel you could only rename the characters once (unless you wanted to reload the entire game after resetting the Speccy). There were a couple of other bugs in _Back to Skool_ besides the one you pointed out in which you could no longer get knocked off desk seats. One is where you go right up to the left wall of the boys’ school, face to the right and fire your water pistol, which caused the screen to scroll, and that all movement from thereon would cause the screen to scroll again until you were looking at the girls’ school on the far right of the playing area. Although you could control yourself whilst off-screen you would quite often have to wait until the next playtime before you could keep walking to the right as the caretaker opened the boys’ school door, then the main gate separating the two schools, before you could walk back onto the screen and have the flick-screen scrolling return to normal. The other bug involved the blue room. During a class of yours in there, if you ran into the library whilst the teacher was wiping the board, waited for the swot to grass on you, then returned to the blue room when your name appeared in his speech balloon, the teacher would start wiping the board again and then start to try and walk through the wall. If you then walked right to get the screen to scroll, then retraced your steps to get the screen to scroll back to the full visibility of the blue room the teacher would have disappeared (not permanently, as it happens, but in actual fact he would have walked right through the wall and re-emerged in the girls’ school and would eventually be able to wend his way back to where he was supposed to be). Shame that the teacher in question could not get stick from Miss Take (the headmistress) for being a male in a girls’ school because she would certainly have bollocked Eric for being in there at any point!

IT'S IRONIC. I wonder how many kids skipped school so they could play Skool Daze at their mate's place while Mum and Dad were at work. Especially after begging Mum and Dad to "please please please buy me a Spectrum. I promise I will use it for my homework." Hopefully, Sir Clive never found out what his "educational" computer was actually used for. ;-) Luv your reviews, Kim. :-)

I gotta admit even as a US C64 fan and someone who mocks the Speccie that the 128 and the +2 are gorgeous looking pieces of hardware. But as a US retro games fan its not worth the effort to even get one. On the upside there are some games including these on the legit Spectaculator release on Ios.

My 8th grade history teacher was 88 years old when I had him. He retired twice before me, but well our town was small and we didn't have enough teachers so they kept asking him back. He'd punch students. He threw me out of my desk because he thought I was writing in a book.... turns out it was the kid next to me. His teaching style was to just play movies and give tests. He'd also play Rush Limbaugh in class.

@MaxSpender

The surprising thing is how long it took for Bully to be released. There's nothing like Skooldaze on the 16 bit or 32 bit machines ... not until 2006 near the end of the PS2's life span. Apart from Klass of 99, which wasn't a licensed game.

I assume the uneven scanlines are a result of RU-vid's compression? I really hope it doesn't look that bad on your computer. I hate uneven scanlines. They bother me too much for some reason.

What is the term for a European "weeaboo"? That is, someone who is a weeb for the Euro. In my case, I'd I have some amount of Euro Weeb within my soul. You all have impeccable style, and the fact that no "80's video game crash" meant a thing to you all is pretty cool. Respect.
