Jerry, your humility is a model to all aspiring shooters as well as all young men. You are a world champion but speak of yourself like a common recreational shooter. That speaks much to your character. Also, your attention to safety is a credit to not only shooting sports, but firearms ownership. Great video as always.

The reason for the last cartridge flying out is that the last cartridge sometimes wedges on the wrong side of the follower since you loaded from the bottom. The rifle is designed to be loaded from the top. Try loading from the top, the problem should be solved by this. Regards, Yevgen, Ukraine

If you load a SKS like that, you have 50% chances that the last round ends up on the wrong side of the magazine follower. And if the last round is on the wrong side, the rifle spits it out when the bolt opens on it... Exactly what happened to Jerry. You also run the risk of bending the follower’s arm. Do NOT load a SKS from the bottom of the magazine, unless it’s an emergency, OR you take the time to check you staggered column order.

The sks is probably one of my most favorite gun. I got an sks from my father in law 16 yrs ago and I still have it and it is still one of my favorite guns. I used it for hunting and still do. Ive put so much ammo through mine since the ammunition was so cheap. But it's had many different transformations it had a scope then red dot three different stocks but the one thing is its still a heavy gun. That's my go to gun when shit hits the even over my AR-15 or my M1 carbine and some of my others just cause it's never let me down.

@realtyrocks1969
@realtyrocks1969 2 года назад
That's silly. The sks is a good gun but if you were fighting against someone with an AR15 you'd lose every time, if for no other reason that capacity and speed of reloads. You have 3 reloads for every 1 AR mag, and can reload much quicker with AR. Transportation of reloads is harder on stripper clips too. The T top sks mags are even worse to carry. The sks serves much better as a patrol rifle where few rounds will be fired. It's not something you want to fight with, which is why it saw very limited use in combat.
@Marz-px6vx
@Marz-px6vx 2 года назад
@@realtyrocks1969 you don't need a stripper clip to load an sks I have 30rnd 20rnd plastic mags just like an ar15 and I got a speed loader it's not harder to load an sks than an ar15 I don't know where you got your information maybe do some research on an sks I have and ar15 style stock for mine and I have red dot and it's semi automatic like an ar15 and the ammo is abundant like ar15 so look at how much different accessories there are for an ar15. Maybe in the 50s I would of had a wood stock and 5rnd 10 red mags that took stripper clips but sks accessories evolved you can make your sks look any way you want. So before you blurt out a paragraph know your weapon I have and ar15 to so I understand what accessories and both are capable of.
@realtyrocks1969
@realtyrocks1969 2 года назад
@Marz8999 1st off dude I've had an SKS since I was 13 years (more than 30 yrs) old. I currently own 3 of them so you're not going to tell me anything about the SKS I don't already know. And I know you don't need stripper clips to load the sks. You can load them one at a time from the top or you can load them by dropping them in the bottom of the mag. (Either way is slower than AR15) You can convert your sks to run on mags but they have that stupid T at the top of the mag, they are a curved mag and are much harder to run in a chest rig, especially when compared to a nearly straight magazine of an AR15 with no T top. You're a dishit kid and you have no idea what you're talking about. The AR15 has a nearly straight magazine that inserts directly into the magwell and drops fast. The sks has a T shaped magazine (because it was not designed to use a removable mag) and its required rocking in to hold the magazine much more like an AK. The design of the AR15 is far superior in every aspect to the SKS and is why almost nobody has used the sks in combat and nearly everybody used the AR platform. Ps. Your mom is calling you to dinner.

I bought a brand new yugo model sks years ago for $89. It came packed in cosmoline. Not having the eye for detail and wisdom years of playing with rifles brings you, I failed to get all the cold war goop out of the firing pin. Loaded the mag closed the bolt aimed the rifle downrange and squeezed the trigger and nothing happened thinking I failed to rack one in the chamber I pulled the bolt back and saw a bullet was in fact racked and ready, as I shut the bolt the round unexpectedly went off and hit the ground about 20 ft in front of my target. I'm very grateful I was practicing good muzzle safety, but should have paid better attention to making sure my weapon was completely clean before taking it to the range. Let that be a lesson just like Jerry said make sure you clean the cosmoline out of the firing pin before firing those sks's. Be safe out there folks. Thanks Jerry, you are a Legend.

Sort of confirms what I see on news films. The bad guys seem to use full automatic much of the time. I have heard that's what the gun was designed for. Specifically, dig it out of the rice paddy fire three seconds of full auto and reload. Those magazine pouches on the chest hold what? Six 30 round magazines? It was all I could mange to find room for ten twenty round magazines of 7.62 NATO up into the guard tower East of Pleiku. I have no actual idea what I am talking about. Even with your vast experience and familiarity with firearms, you gear your videos to new shooters, and emphasize safe handling as job one, with chamber flags and not having ammo on the table while handling weapons. You motivated me a couple years back to store my ammunition in a different room from my gun safe. I have two SKSs myself but the one I like is the Paratrooper model that accepts any AK-47 magazine. It is by far much more accurate than the AK. I would believe that his SKS that he was shooting at 400 meters was probably a little bit off on his front sight. They are set at the factory but are not tweaked to be exactly in the middle. Most of the time if you bore sight your SKS you will not miss after it is centered. It is my go to rifle, especially with the 30 round magazine.

Thanks for the video Jerry. I got by SKS 35+ years ago for $125.00 at a gun show near Fort Benning, GA. I lived on base and the range was 1/4 mile away. 😁 Bought 2 steel boxes of ammo and still have 1/2 a box left now. I have fired over 600 rounds at targets 100 yards at that range. I fired it better than my issue M16, but I never was allowed to practice with the M16 like I could with my own weapon. Now the Army will not allow private weapons on base. How can anyone get better if they are not allowed to train? Even with their own time and money. Now my S&W 44 Magnum I bought the same day and still have has been fired 7000+ times. Thank god for reloading equipment and lead casting dies.

Probably the best knockaround rifle ever. Ballistics of the 7.62x39mm are pretty useful, and it penetrates well. The muzzle energy is close to common 30-30 from a 20" barrel. I put an ATI synthetic stock on mine for the length of pull. The Chinese stocks are understandably a bit short for a 6'2" person with longish arms. This was my first ever rifle, so i learned a bit about working on guns with it.

Hi Jerry, I too bought a nice numbers-matching SKS a while back from an acquaintance here in the area (running it through FFL). It was an early Russian version made by "Tula Arms." After learning of the "bump-fire" problem, I also learned that some firing pins do have the return spring, but not all. I immediately disassembled mine for a look-see and found that it *did* have a firing pin return spring. It was around the business end of the pin, much like a return string on a ballpoint pen. I understand that one *might* be able to add the missing spring to those that don't come with one, but I'm not entirely sure, since it might depend on whether there was enough extra room machined into the bolt on non-sprung versions. I recall my last order made from an ad in the Shotgun News for three 1200rd Cases of Chinese 7.62x39 in 1997. $240, delivered. 3600 rounds. 18 months later, the ATF banned it as AP since it was steel cored.

Mr Miculek, I believe your gun's failure at the beginning was a result of a mis-loaded round. The SKS is meant to be fed from the top. You will notice that the magazine's follower is stepped, and if the last cartridge is on the wrong side of the magazine, it is possible that without sideways pressure the round can be ejected straight out of the top of the magazine without stopping at the feedlips. Loading from stripper clips, or even single cartridges from the top of the magazine should prevent this issue from happening in the future.
@KoonceTodd
@KoonceTodd 9 лет назад
BTW, you can test this hypothesis quite easily by intentionally loading a single round on the incorrect side of the magazine.

Works best in summer here in Canada, and any place where temps become brutal inside automobiles with the windows closed. Wrap your SKS in rags...every bit of it...muzzle opening to butt-plate...but it in a black garbage bag, and lay on the dash of your vehicle, facing the afternoon sun. Do a rattle test: shake the bolt and you should be able to hear the firing pin moving back and forth and making a rattling sound! There are some firing pin kits available ( or at least there were atone time) that had a modified firing pin with a spring on it to keep it rearward until the hammer hit it.
