In this video we will be going over the immediately obsolescent SKS rifle, at least the Chinese variant anyway. Although replaced almost immediately, the SKS is still one of the most prolific rifles in the world. Is the SKS still worth buying today?

The Russians started chrome lining the barrels in 1951, IIRC. They started the lining about the same time they did away with the spring-loaded firing pin.

You can speed your SKS reload up a bit by pulling back and up on the empty stripper clip which allows you to basically charge the bolt as you remove the stripper clip

Good call. I need to give it a go with some of the cheaper strippers I have so I don't bend the good ones

SKS is great, like AK it's a die hard. It is a little bit more of a challenge to get the gas tube and piston assembly apart but still quite simple and easily mastered once you do it. I cleaned my first one often since we had Chinese surplus ammo available back then and it was some real dirty, smokey, stinky stuff. I wish I could get some now for less than $3.00 a box as well as the Chinese stripper clips a buck for 10, was the good old days.

Another good video and hope that you have recovered from whatever it was! Take your point about AK vs SKS mags BUT that is supposing a ready supply of loaded mags.,how about a scenario with only ONE mag which has to be manually reloaded,how would the rate of fire compare to an SKS? The fixed magazine of the SKS also precludes a lost magazine scenario where the AK turns into a very fiddly single shot! I like your old SKS,it exhibits real character!

That would be a really good test! It would be fun to lay out both guns, fire through a set amount or mag/ then see which is faster to load back up into the fight. I imagine the sks would be quicker to action in that scenario

Liberty Tree Collectors. They aren't cheap but they're the good ones! $20 for 5 of them. They have pouches, slings, and other such stuff too

@triplefshooting I just got 2 packs...at the gunshows I've been too...there were either none available or they were 10$ a piece. 10$ a piece is too much

@allenlindsey1175 agreed. I got lucky and stumbled on a whole bag of like 30 for $10 or so in a milsurp shop when I was in my early 20s. They've held up great ever since.

Have a challenge for you, if you have any extra cylinders for the 1858 new model Remington pitted against the American model number 3 Schofield or model 2, in a reloading time as well as a stopping power

That would certainly be interesting. I need to get my hands on a spare cylinder. There's certainly a good reason the percussion revolvers stayed around as long as they did. In the early days of cartridge guns, I don't think many people had a ton of good reasons to rush out and buy the new tech.
