I show a torque converter from a Skyactiv Drive GW6A-EL that is used in the factory 2.5 turbo cars and 2.2 diesel cars. I compare it against the smaller Skyactiv Drive FW6A-EL converter to show the differences between them.

This is a really cool video, thanks for showing all the differences and talking about the effects. I also appreciate you making that learning mode video, you made it very easy to follow so thank you sir.

What's your opinion on Mazda saying the transmission fluid is 'lifetime? I want to do a full fluid flush on mine around 50k miles but at over $100 for the correct ATF is bit hard to justify.

All fluids break down over time. Personally, I'll be changing mine at 30k. 50k is a fine interval for most people, and I would only use the Mazda FZ.

I have a question out of curiosity. Does the torque converter clutch stay locked while shifting gears? Or does the clutch open quickly, an upshift is made and then the clutch locks again?
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 28 дней назад
It usually stays locked to some extent, I've never observed it fully unlocking during a shift either up or down. I'm working on another few videos, and one of them involves a more in-depth observation of TCC function.

What caused the failure? Do we know yet?
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 Год назад
This type of damage is usually caused by a few things. The first is a hydraulic leak, this transmission has air checked perfectly throughout the transmission and valve body so not a hydraulic leak. The only damage is to the 3-5-R clutch set. There are quite a few transmission family's that operate with this sort of clutch arrangement and failure in this instance indicates it was a type of abuse. When a vehicle is in elevated idle such as cold start and the rpms are still above 1000 or so the person just puts it in reverse and goes before the idle drops. The 3-5-R clutch is a brake instead of a driving clutch and it puts a bunch of very quick sharp stress on the clutch set. This is my assumption of what happened to this one based on every other clutch set to be working correctly and no mechanical damage found.

How strong does the turbo trans look compared to transmissions you have seen
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 Год назад
There are a few things you can mathematically calculate out based on clutch sizes, pressures, etc. Some things it's too difficult to figure out based on metal fatigue strength without being part of the development team behind the transmission. We won't know the limits of the transmission until some serious power starts getting made with the engines and then we'll find the weak links. Nothing inside the transmission is looks "cheaped" out on and we see them go a long time before a rebuild is needed. The pinion gears inside the planets are a good size and larger than comparable transmissions like a Toyota U660, Ford 6F55/GM 6T70 and has larger internals than some RWD transmissions behind more powerful engines.

@@21mazda3turbo3 would you say if going the performance route cooling needs to be upgraded in these transmissions

For longevity sake adding a separate cooler will help, they do run a bit warm. I've got a few designs I'm working on for it.

In your opinion, do you think the non turbo SkyActiv 6spd is a 100,000 mile trans? 200,000 mile trans? More than that? Less than that?

I've seen some early failures but have seen many more with 150k plus miles.

@@21mazda3turbo3 That's good to hear, here's to hoping my 2023 3 base model lasts as long as my old hand-me-down 1998 Mazda 626 did! 210K miles when I gave it away and it lives on with someone else now. Heck of an upgrade let me tell you. Your AT learning re-set did the trick after it learned some bad behaviors during break in. Feels great now, still drags the 1-2 a little in 'manual' even in 'sport' but hey it's not a sports car.

@@21mazda3turbo3so its looks like well designed and well build transission. Seems better as dual clutch constructions i think… I mean from reliability POV
