Skydiver's near impact and landing on top of a mountain

Caution, this video is LOUD (can't change it anymore)!
Location: Ambri - Switzerland
The purpose of this video is to show the importance of spotting, no matter where you jump but in particular in the mountains.
The group was the 2nd to exit, the drop was at the wrong place (organizer error) and nobody noticed until it was almost too late.
It was pure coincidence and only the quick reaction by the skydivers involved prevented injuries or worse.
I uploaded this video in order to allow anyone interested to learn from it and to help other people to prevent making the same mistakes.
Some of you might say: "of course, I always spot anyway" but in fact, a lot of people don't, especially if they're not the first (group) exiting.
Always spot!!! It doesn't cost you anything, certainly not your life!
Blue skies
N.
P.S.:
1. we know what went wrong so there's no need to remind us :-)
2. Audibles as well as AADs don't help in a situation like this as they are set to the pressure level of the landing area more than 4.000 ft lower.
3. Deploying the reserve would have been the right choice (faster, more reliable). However, as you can see, there was NO time for thinking and thus your body intuitively and automatically does what it always does: pull the main

Call me crazy but I think looking down every once in a while should be an integral part of the skydiving process.
@nemoskyfish
@nemoskyfish 3 года назад
Surprisingly, it is not. Also, this was not a normal jump, a lot went wrong here, mainly caused by the organizers. And if you jump in a group, the people inside the aircraft hardly can look down. But this video is used for awareness training, so things are improving.

@Mauro Molinero, I almost died mainly because of a wrong drop but also due to more mistakes that others and myself made. To prevent other skydivers from making the same mistakes, I posted this video and it is being used on many DZs for awareness training, that's all. If you want to die for fun, enjoy.

Man, that is absolutely incredible how lucky you are. Simply unbelievable. I couldn't even imagine. I've never jumped around mountains, so I've never really thought about something like this but, WOW! This was probably the single most terrifying skydiving video I've ever seen someone walk away from. Good on you for reacting quickly and saving yourself. Thanks for sharing too!

Glad you're ok. Thanks also for posting it. It's easy to hide one's mistakes from the world by simply not posting it... and saving yourself the trouble of dealing with tons of comments telling you what you already know by now. But for the rest of us, it's always good to have a reality check and a reminder of what could go wrong and open up discussion on how to prevent it from happening again. At least I appreciated it. So thanks. And wow... what a video! :)

I can't believe he doesn't understand that at terminal velocity, in order to run down the mountain you'd have to run at 200 mph... at Usain Bolt could only do 27. And you know... angles. You don't have traction on a vertical mountain side, but if you tried to hit a sloping hillside you'd be unable to convert your downwards momentum into horizontal momentum in the .1 seconds it takes to put your brains into your toes at terminal velocity.

1. At what height did you jump out of the plane? 2. How high were those mountain peaks? Being the alps I bet they came up sooner than expected seeing as no one tracked and you were a second or 2 from dying. Glad you're alive and this video is a good lesson to consider these factors.
@nemoskyfish
@nemoskyfish 3 года назад
I think the drop was at around 14k ft AGL. The peaks must have been at around 6500ft AGL. We were supposed to be dropped above the valley, nobody noticed we were actually above the mountain. So audibles were set to 5000ft for separation, just the usual. It came as a total surprise. Half a second later would have been too late.

I like the camera shot at 1:25 looking through the wheat-like grass at the blue sky. If you ever get a chance to watch that video. Don't. There are things you can't unsee. That was just one of a few dozen other images I wish I could erase from the inside of my eyelids everytime I close them. Hope you never find out what the inside of a friend looks like. Yes exactly, for performance, comfort of openings and comfort of packing. Packing a reserve usually takes about 1 hour and can only be done by a qualified rigger. Packing a main is much faster, it can easily be done in less than 10 min. with some practice.

To make it short, everything on a reserve is optimized for safety, the construction, the way it's packed and the material. That results in the reserve opening faster and more reliable than a main which could be useful in a situation like this. Again, reflex. There was no time to think (like, not even 1 second), so you act as you always do, pull the main. I'm not sure I could do it differently if it happened again, to be honest.

I think the main is for higher up and the reserve is the back up, or when you're closer to the ground. I could be wrong but if the reserve is the emergency chute it'd make sense to have that one used when closer tot he ground as that is an emergency.

You might say so, yes! Performance as well in packing-time as in flight. There are way more different main canopies on the market, then reserves to fit everybodies personal priorities. From high turning speeds to nice and soft openings. Some mains need 200+ meters to open, which is good for your spine at your everyday jumps. A reserve needs to open faster and more reliable (onheading opening, less malfunctions). Still packing a main is done with caution.Not like "whatever, i still got my reserve
