Preston is a small annoyance comparing to a guy saying: "By Azura, by Azura, by Azura! It's the grand champion! I can't believe it's you! Standing here! Next to me!" After hearing this line 200 times you will want to kill him just to get rid of this demon, but it gets worse because this dude actually respawns every single time he dies. 😬

For anyone who can't figure it out yet, like ESO, when Umbra summons his minions it makes him vulnerable, there is a set amount of damage per cycle, but after that set amount, he will cast blizzard, or at least it was blizzard for me, so I assume it's just a master level spell. You can do this quest at level one, meaning full ebony and the sword at level one!

I done this at level 252 so umbra was easy and my sword does 54 damage,i dont recommend doing this at level 1 because leveling is easy and your sword wont do much damage at level 1 because the quest is level based, the damage is based off of your level

This plus Ebony Mail, Black Star, Namira's Ring..... *The Knight of Oblivion* build! Of course the mount is *Arvak* naturally, and either the *Locket of St. Jiub* or *The Gauldr Amulet* for the necklace. Also the *Arm of the Moon* and maybe a shield if that's your fancy.

I feel like there's a Pitch Black reference in this quest. In that movie, the eclipse happened every 22 years, which is how long prior to the game the journal was written (4E 179 - 4E 201). And of course Umbra means shadow and is the darkest part of an eclipse's shadow.

I remember when I was like 9 or 10 years old and taking umbra over to the waterfront and just having the guards kill her or shooting her with arrows on top of the buildings. Umbra and Wuuthrad are easily my top 2 favorite weapons in all of Elder Scrolls lore.

On my first playthrough of this one, I was ill-equiped to handle it so I went and retrieved Barbas both because he can't die and because it fit thematically to send a Daedra to beat a Daedra...and specifically the one who ended up with it in Oblivion.

To beat Umbra in one go, I use the Become Ethereal shout to become invincible while umbra's invincible, too (make sure to have all three words of the shout!) Then make sure you are using a powerful one-handed weapon (Mace of Molag Bal, Dragonsbane, etc) and have Fast Healing in the other hand. This way you will easily mow down Umbra fast.

The best way to deal with the disarm shout is to sheathe your weapon when you hear them starting the shout, you won't drop it when it's sheathed. Then you can pull it out after getting hit.

I’m am 2:38 in, but if I remember correctly Umbra is Clavicus Viles most prized artifact. Vile put so much of his power in the sword that it is sentient. It also explains why there is a Hisk tree in Skyrim

Obtaining the sword is way more fun in Oblivion. 1. Run to the Ayleid ruin VinDiesel with a water walking potion at lvl 1. 2. Pull Umbra to the middle of Imperial City by running across the water. 3. Run circles while the guards deal with Umbra. 4. Loot your sword and armor that are too heavy to carry. 5. Remember that a Trick pays for something a real adventurer gets for free, and give Creation Club the finger. 6. Return to VinDiesel with telekinesis spell to collect welkynd stones. (optional)

I actually often encounter a guy with a weapon called umbra in my playthroughs because it's added by Legacy of the Dragonborn, and a bug / incopmatibility with other mods I have make it so that instead of staying where he's meant to be, he hunts me down / travels across Skyrim. It is always an intense fight with a lot of deaths (because I still am in low levels, most of the time) and I would probably be overpowered by getting his stuff early on (he's got a one handed umbra, ebony shield and full ebony armor, all enchanted), but all of it is just incompatible with my stealth archer characters haha
