Laurie's 40 year PTSD was so implausible. Honestly I think they handled it far better in H20.

What bothered me was when Laurie said " you're the new Loomis". She spent even less time with him than she did with Michael. All the legendary status of both characters are erased with the timeline. Great vid as always.

I love that you're the balance between subjective reviews and objective reviews. I'm a fellow horror fan, myself, and sometimes I can get into a particular franchise or movie and put it high up on a pedestal, but you point out things that we, as horror fans, should pay attention to in order to gain a more clear perspective on these movies. Personally, I enjoyed this particular film because it went back to what Carpenter originally intended, it had Jaime Lee, and it gave Laurie a more defined, satisfying comeback (not that H20 didn't do that because it did), but yeah. Awesome channel. I love your reviews.

I love how deep you went on this one and agree with most of your points. There were definately far too many call backs especially ones they already did in H20. They've just put themselves in a corner bringing Laurie back without the family angle theres no reason for Michael to go after any of the Strodes so unless they go after him in the next one it makes zero sense taking away the familt angle.

Been waiting for you to do an in-depth look at this movie for a while! While I didn't love it, I personally did really like the movie and direction they took. As much as I was a fan of the old continuity, I think wiping the slate was definitely the best way to go to restore Michael to being THE SHAPE again; did they do that? I'd say for the most part; yes, but there were definitely flaws like you said. My issue was primarily the pacing, editing, and lack of real stalk scenes, but I know the twist was a HUGE flaw for some people. Great video as always, Jason.

Unfortunately with Jamie Lee Curtis being in the movie none of the other characters were given the proper time to get attatched to unlike the original 3 girls. This made me not care when the granddaughter's friends are killed. I agree with damn near all of your criticisms. After being able to rewatch it on Blu Ray it did slide down my ranking to 6th behind Curse of Michael Myers. Love your honest reviews, thank you.

I respect your opinion on this movie but, I really liked this one because it made Michael Myers scary again. He is more brutal in this film. I think that maybe some of the call backs in this one is for the twenty somethings that they want to see the other films in the franchise. I wasn’t a huge fan of the nothing characters in this film like Ray. He didn’t add anything to the story for me. I could have went without hearing that he spilled peanut butter on his penis bit. Dr.Sartain I feel was a discount Dr.Loomis and an unnecessary character like Ray. I wanted Will Patton’s character to be developed more than it was. I’m glad that they took the brother/sister angle out of this one. A complete lack of motive just makes it more terrifying to me. I can’t wait for Halloween Kills to come out so we can all see how Michael escapes from the basement. Good review!

Karen Strode Nelson wakes up from her nap, hears a shower running, walks into the bathroom, sees someone in the shower, opens the door, sees her Mother Laurie. Laurie: (turns around to see that it's her daughter) Good Morning. Karen: I thought you were dead. Killed by Michael Myers. I thought you were the sister to Michael Myers, Dr. Loomis killed Michael in the hospital, you cut off his head 20 years later. Then 3 years later he killed you. Laurie: It is not real, it was all a dream. Karen: A dream? Laurie: Yes.

Nice to see a review that is bringing out the issues this film has. I feel the same way. It's not a horrible film, but it's far from amazing like hundreds of people claim. Yeah I was like that with Laurie being that way after 40 years. Traumatised sure. But at least with the previous ones when they were related, at least seeing everything he was capable of and how many times he'd return to kill her it made sense to be on edge and expecting him to return. Don't forget Myers making noise when his fingers are blown off and when he is kicked down the stairs. If people will moan about it in Zombie's films that he makes noise then it needs addressing here too. Again, not a terrible film but issues sure.
@lordginge2010
@lordginge2010 5 лет назад
Just another thing I forgot to mention too... they aren't related yet at the end she calls him "Michael" - if the family angle was still in play ok fair dues. But this is now just a guy who ruined your life for 40 years... call him Myers, call him the Shape... call him the POFS who ruined my life years ago... I don't think you'd call him his first damn name though

Jason I completely agree with you entirely on this film, especially in the sense that it's nowhere near on the level of bad as Resurrection but still pretty mediocre. Another thing that annoyed me about this film was how there was no explanation offered about how Michael was able to sustain 6 gunshot wounds to the chest before falling out of a 2nd story window, and somehow not dying. And was he even shot to begin with or was that retconned too? That part really irritated me too.

Here's how the could have made the Laurie and Michael trauma work. Make all the other movies canon. Like literally they could say Micheal woke up at the end of Resurrection, killed Busta Rhymes but then got incarcerated in the mental institution. Literally if you want Laurie to be that damaged, you need to make the other movies canon, otherwise you're expecting us to care about this showdown that has no weight to it. Hell you could say Halloween 3 is canon too since they could say that the reason why the original was playing was because the 1st and 2nd movies were so big that they made a movie version of them and then a subtle bit of dialogue about what happened to the children and you can tie it perfectly in. A bit convoluted but much better than erasing the whole history.

When this film was first announced I was more anxious than excited because I just kept remembering Resurrection. But this one benefits from the cinema experience massively and watching it again at home made me realise that the novelisation (which reads like a directors cut) will probably be the one I revisit more than the film, there's just something that stayed with me about the book that the film lacked and the only time that's ever happened was with the novelisation for the first Fright Night film. And the "Michael must meet Laurie" issue could have been handled more naturally if (in my idea for a sequel) if she'd been on the police force, that her motivation towards helping people of the town had some weight behind it rather than the crazy survivalist shtick, if she'd been on the police force she'd have had a more natural feeling eventual meeting with Michael
@stephenmoss6874
@stephenmoss6874 5 лет назад
Your review was absolutely spot on. Halloween 2018 could have been so much better, especially with this being a direct sequel to the original. Sadly we may never get this opportunity again. So many things could have been done better. We don't even hear Michael's heavy breathing in this either. This for me was a major trademark of the Shape in the first film. Those grunting sounds Michael made when killing his victims. Stuff like this made the Shape even scarier in 1978. If they decide to make a sequel, I'd like to see Michael go back to the Myers house. In the 1978 original this was the first place Michael went to after his escape from Smith's Grove.

Although I do notice all the flaws.. I still really really enjoy this movie, it wasn't perfect, definitely not, but if I don't think about things too much and suspend my disbelief a little bit then I just have so much fun with it personally, just the same as almost all of the other Halloween movies aside from the original. I saw the podcast you did on the other channel about this movie but was eagerly awaiting a full review, you have delivered!, love listening to your thoughts. I had to come back and revisit this review Jason. I watched this one again on Halloween night. I’ve probably seen it 3 or 4 times since it came out, and I couldn’t agree more, it does NOT feel like a Halloween film. Not only does it not feel like a Halloween film, but I felt as if I had never seen the film before. Tragically forgettable. I never thought I could ascribe the word FORGETTABLE to any Michael Myers film. It’s at least not Resurrection, but 5 years later this one stands to me as sadly sadly ineffective and lackluster.

Laurie would have realized looking back at that day of Halloween before she was attacked , that Michael was stalking her because she would Rember the school window when he was standing there, the car scene when he drove by and slammed on his breaks , the bush scene , the looking out her bedroom window scene , so looking back her ptsd would run way more then just her attack , that day would play out over and over because she would have put it all together later on . Michael wouldn't have given a shit about Laurie 40 years later probly never thought of her in 39 and a half years , the movie should have simply had Michael follow the grand daughter after he killed her drunk friend and she could have went to her grand mothers house and that was how Michael see's Laurie again but he would barely recognize her I mean it's been 40 years.

The atmosphere in this film was all over the place and none of it was subtle. Showing the mask in broad daylight at the very beginning of the film was so lame to me. That whole storyline with those two podcasters was TERRIBLE! Do people really think podcasts and penis jokes belong in a Halloween film? I kept hoping it would get better but it kept getting worse. I agree with everything you said EXCEPT... the interest and relevance of Michael would certainly still be there. Absolutely. Imagine four or five murders in any small town. No matter what era or generation since then, the lore and curiosity would still be there especially if one of the victims were still alive and living in that same town. I think if my town had a murderer in 78 and the info was he killed his sister, was locked up for 15 years, escaped, killed a mechanic on route 21, wore a mask on Halloween night, stalked and killed four other people on that night, got caught, still alive in the institution, being transported, um yes that would make history in the minds of everyone in that particular town. People would actually scare other people by using his name as a scare tactic. Dahmer and Bundy aren't scary because they aren't from Your hometown and they don't have the persona of mystery shrouded on them. They speak and we see their face. They're dead as well. So in short yes, I think Myers would still be relevant and just as scary.

The main thing I like about 2018 is that the character of Myers scared me like in the original when I was a kid. mm, I don't think the PTSD is implausible - if she had other experiences in her life that meant she had an underlying condition, a form of anxiety for example, plus everyone gets hit by things in their own way, etc. I don't know if its likely - if she's never left town it could make sense, being surrounded by the same environment day in day out. As for the he family connection in Halloween 2, it was made around the same time as Prom Night and the killer was her brother in that, so it could be that as well as the whole Darth Vader being Luke's dad thing. Personally, I didn't like the film, it seemed a little...safe for want of a better word, and I think that hurt it.

To be fair, RZ did the family and brother sister angle waaay better than the original series. I never liked Laurie as the face of the series. At least H6 makes sense than John Strode couldnt sell the house after the murders so they moved in. H2018 was a huge letdown but had some good parts. I rank 2018 better than H20 and Resurrection but that is all. H3, H6, RZ H2, these are my favorite sequels due to balls and creativity and originality.

Sinister Cinema Reviews It definitely is a cool perspective, I personally think what Laurie went through as far as her absurd amount of PTSD was actually a little far fetched to a degree and I also get what you and the granddaughter’s friend in the film were talking about. Michael Myers really wouldn’t be all that scary in 2018 when we’ve had worse like John Wayne Gacy etc.

Man, your criticisms are mine, almost verbatim. If there was one thing that really killed the movie for me, it would be the fast-paced editing. The original Halloween built suspense and tension through deliberate pacing, whereas this movie has to make a thousand cuts per minute.

Really love this movie, problems and all. As a stand alone flick, Laurie is a totally endearing, damaged character and carries the movie well. The kills were fun. It was fine, especially compared to a few of the past sequels and will be a consistent rewatch for me. But I do hate that they called it plain ole Halloween as well, lol.

When I heard about this film coming out, I was thinking what? I thought Laurie was killed in Resurrection? Even though I do not like that movie, but it still happened. Then I heard that they were erasing every single sequel to the franchise except the first one. I was sooo pissed. Sooo pissed. Hate it or love it, I loved Halloween II (1981), I have watched that movie and the original the same amount of times. That honestly took me away from the movie. And then came the day that I watched it, I just flat out HATED IT! I'm sorry, but the film felt way too convenient with everything. Gotta get Laurie with Michael, they need to meet up together because reasons. I had seen a film like this one only better, H20, despite its flaws, I still hold as a sequel to Halloween II.

Perhaps this movie is rough in places, but all sequels had many problems and stupid solutions. Especially the second part had a huge number of really idiotic decisions. The fourth was generally cheap thrash. This film was strong enough for me, well shot, with good acting, but it could be better. In any case, he did not deserve so much negativity in his address just because he is new, and you can forgive everything for the old sequels, because we saw them in childhood.

Great review bro! Gotta respect your opinion on a lot of the negatives in this film. I guess I went into this movie with my expectations really fuckin tamed it didn't disappoint but also didn't blow me away it was just like meh a decent sequel. James Jude Courtney was bad ass as Michael! Had the movements down to a tee! I'm curious to what your thoughts are on David Gordon green directing this. Was he the right guy? And when we get a sequel who would you like to see direct it?

RZs H2 was a million times better than this. No doubt whatsoever. This was fun nostalgia and fan service and nothing more. I was seriously let down by this. It felt like a sequel to Pineapple Express with special guest Michael Myers. Lol. James Jude Courtney as Michael and a quick sound bite of Loomis giving his recommendation to the court (It needs to die) were the only great things about this. Overall it was not made for the fans but for the masses. I hope they drop this timeline and make no further sequels unless it is a direct sequel to H6 or another anthology type film. Sincerely. (But we know that will not happen)

sometimes when you analyse a film too much it gets reduce to nothing. for me it is one of the better Halloween films out of the whole franchise to be honest. from the kids wearing seasons of the witch mask, to that decapitated head with flash light inside of it,the brutal kills, the soundtrack Cody carpenter and John carpenter did was phenomenal..the shape hunts allyson was the best ever!! people grip about dr. sartain but it is what it is.. unlike some closed minded people i really enjoyed this film and i am looking forward to Halloween 2 🎃🔪

I pretty much went into this with negative expectations because the rest of the franchise has become such a laughingstock, and not surprisingly I wasn't impressed. Upon rewatching it, I'm all right with it I guess. It's definitely one of the better sequels for whatever that's worth, but Sartain is just a cheap discount Loomis (mighty convenient that he happens to even have a british accent), and the twist with him I found absurd. But most of all, I don't know how in the world they roped me in, but this thing was played up in advance press as the final confrontation blah blah blah, so I went in thinking, okay, the shit is going down. This is their chance to pull out all the stops and go out with a bang. They might even really, properly kill off Laurie (as opposed to that stupid shit from an earlier sequel). I guess I should have known better, because of course they went with that punk ass ambiguous ending leaving the door open for yet another fucking sequel. And now of course it's well known that they have not one, but TWO sequels in the works (which makes no fucking sense anyway from a marketing standpoint. When the next film comes out, how is anyone expected to be invested in the outcome when they already fucking know that another sequel is in the works????). For that reason alone, as far as I'm concerned I'm officially done with this God damn franchise. I have no intention of watching either of the next two. (And as you can tell, I got more and more angry the more I typed about this fucking movie. There was shit about it that I thought was okay, but particularly the ending just makes me fucking angry. This whole thing is nothing but a cash grab, and I went into this thing thinking that maybe, just MAYBE, it would have some integrity and be a final love letter to the fans and put a definitive end to the whole thing. Instead it was basically a "fuck you, suckers! Thanks for your money" message to the fans. Fuck these people)

I watched H 2018 when it came out so I waited until June of 2020 to watch it again on 4K. Unfortunatly it went down . So I sat and figured out why, plain and simply not enough Michael doing what Michael does best , no stalking , no time alone with Michael and he comes off like a bitch in this movie . It's terrible man and it pisses me off. There is one good scene and we all know it , the long tracking scene . The main problem is Laurie , had they not worried about putting her in this movie we would have had out Michael back doing stalking , possibly new blood or Hell just on a rampage in Haddonfield or maybe Russleville something different. Michael is basically a human shark. They need to stop with the Laurie Strode shit. She beats him up and blows his hand off and cages him I mean come on, always with the present world agendas, they just can't help but get their little fucking agendas in these movies. And yes the title should have been called H 40 That's it. Then when fans all discuss it we can say H 40

Personally, I really enjoyed this one. However... I wish they could have figured out some way around not retconning the original 2. Do away with the brother sister bit, but still hold onto some of that legacy like you were saying. Maybe it would’ve been too much fan service at this point, but I would’ve really liked Danielle Harris return as Jamie, but a different form of Jamie. Might be too much. I like the concept with Laurie and her PTSD and whatnot. I dig it. I didn’t dig the Sartain character, though. I saw that shit coming with him since the movie started. Maybe me just being a filmmaker/storyteller, I notice all of the subtle cues. Not sucking my own tit by saying that or anything, I’m just saying. 😂 I wish that more of the deaths would have actually been on screen. Because literally, most of the deaths were off screen. Really my only problem. Laurie being the reason the bus crashed I read was the original idea. I don’t know how much validity there is to that, though. While I love Laurie and all that, I’m neither here nor there when it comes to her because at this point she’s Ripley and I’m convinced that an Alien movie could be made decent without Ripley or with Ripley as a supporting character at the very most. Whatever. I’ve always hated how in all the other movies he conveniently finds a mask that looks semi reminiscent to the mask from that night after it burns up in 2, so for them to introduce the mask like they did, I appreciated. Though I agree he could literally grab any mask and call it a day. The story could have been better, sure. Like there’s little things I personally would have done differently. All in all, I really enjoy it. 😎
