Who is your favorite Slayer drummer and why? I also would appreciate it if everyone were respectful in the comments, these comparisons are just for fun and should not be taken seriously!
All of them are great drummers. The difference is 2 of them learned to play what the 3rd created. And that's why Dave Lombardo will always be a legend.
@@ThiagoLobato let’s me assist… Paul wrote the drum parts for the God Hates Us songs. Somehow Dave being the drummer he is made it sound even more perfect. The third drummer outside them just plays way too fast over songs he never created. I think the key piece is Paul for some reason always sounds kinda slow with his fills, drum rolls and foot work(even on the songs we writes). I would rank the 3 drummers by Dave being the best > Paul > Jon Jon had a strong good effort but just feels like all speed and no soul. He makes Paul sounds like John Bonham. An no I’m not trying to be a Slayer purist by ranking them in that order. It just is the facts 🤷♂️
@@michaelw9191 Let me assist. Dave wrote SLAYER. He CREATED THE STYLE. Double bass wasn't even much a thing before Slayer. Speed drumming in general in large part was PIONEERED by Lombardo. People today can't even grasp this concept, that NOBODY was playing drums like Lombardo created. You can't compare these drummers. Not because of current skills.
jon dette is severely underrated, you can tell he's incredibly comfortable and also that dave lombardo is one of his biggest inspirations, shame he's not well known
@@leopardcubpupkryky6940 🤔 THIS is the first time I have heard of THIS....And I thought I knew quite a bit about SLAYER drummers history...Dette (far as my knowledge) ONLY toured with the band pretty much right after SLAYER's Undisputed Attitude release and NEVER recorded ANYTHING "new" with the band...And Bostaph had been BACK in the band waaay BEFORE the Diabolus CD was even STARTED recording in the studio....WHERE DID you get/hear that information btw?
Lombardo has an old school groove, and at all speeds, something I find lacking in this style of music at times. Sounds so relaxed yet incredibly tight and powerful. The South of Heaven album's drumming has been such a treat for my ears for decades.
As a drummer of 40 years (since I was 6) , Bostaph, and Nicko McBrain are my all time favorites because I fused their styles, and Paul was/is is a big fan of Nicko. I love their control, relaxation when playing (little effort), groove, great cymbal work, and accuracy. there is much more to playing drums than being FAST. Lombardo is a legend no doubt, but just to sloppy overall, and he's always "overplayed" imo. Also he flails around far to much and doesn't have much "groove". I don't like Dette at all because I've seen him play with Slayer and he messes up FAR to often. So does Lombardo, but he doesn't care lol. I don't know that I've ever heard, nor seen Paul "mess up". Much like Nicko McBrain, they are both flawless to me.
Also listen to how solid and in the pocket Bostaph is with Testament, Forbidden, Exodus etc. That control, and solid playing is just so much better than Lombardo and Dette. Also listen to songs like Killing Fields, SS-3, Dittohead, and one of Pauls finest songs of all time, Gemini. Those other guys weren't NEARLY as creative as he is/was. Pauls drum sound was also superior.
Bostaph and Dette are both great drummers in their own right. But Slayers sound was always synonymous with Dave’s drumming…..they’re some big shoes to fill, and I think they both did a great job.
Thank you I’ve been saying that for years if they hadn’t had Dave I honestly don’t think they’d got as big as they did back in the 80’s when people would pass around their demo cassettes they would usually say something like give it a chance I know the vocals and guitars aren’t the best but the drummer is an absolute animal
And with Dave? It just ALWAYS blows my mind STILL to THIS day HOW friggin EASY he makes HIS playing look! And I am an old school Thrash/Death Metal drummer from the school of LOMBARDO (and early Bostaph as well 😏). But yeah, the shyt (ESPECIALLY the REIGN through DIVINE playing) IS some of the MOST difficult stuff to lay it down, and lay down right and right at that! THAT'S WHY Kerry King has said "Dave is just a natural...Ya know like the baseball movie with Robert Redford? DAVE'S JUST LIKE THAT WITH DRUMMING". 😎🤘🥁🔥
@@oopsydaizi3s824 Hahaha LOL! 😆🤘🤘 Hell yeah man, great example! If ya look at the LIVE UNDEAD album artwork, with the demonized almost cartoonish style dipictions of the bandmembers you also get that same effect/illusion of the band too (least I always did lol.) Plus the fact, that Dave was always compared to the Muppet's drummer ANIMAL as well....LOL. ROCK ON.....
They are all great drummers, but for me Dave has the mix of groove, power and timing and he is also the original drummer in the original lineup of Slayer which makes all the difference. Dette is bloody awesome and doesn't get enough credit. Bostaph sounds a bit all over the place in some of those sections, although he wrote some great drum parts during his time in Slayer.
1) Lombardo - has incredible double kick technique and stamina, classic fills and I think he grooves more than the other two. 2) Bostaph - because of his incredibly technical fill/ drumming style and amazing playing on Divine through GHUA. Unfortunately, his fast double kick skills have significantly regressed over the years. I saw Slayer with him several times and his kick drums almost always seemed really sloppy or non-existent on the fast double kick parts. 3) Dette - should've been more than a hired gun. He's an excellent drummer.
I think Dette won that one ! Very aggressive attack , his meter was right there . Each hit was strong and controlled , and looked like he was easily having a fun time doing it . Could be from Dave , and Paul having played it soo much, or the exciting newness with the fans was kicking the adrenaline level in the place . They were tight !
Lombardo’s attempts at Bostaph tracks are sub-par (especially the fills) and his double bass meter is sooo inconsistent. Paul is way more technical. Edit : He lacks power compared to Paul also.
Dette is definitely underrated. Paul was awesome when he first started with Slayer and did an awesome job with Testament, but started to slow down towards the end. Dave is and has always been awesome. The way he holds the double kick in Angel of Death is just unreal. Then again, Dette did a fantastic job as well.
Dave formulated Slayer's sound, designed their logo and got them signed with Rubin. Every other thrash drummer is inspired by him so he has to be the best. Bostaph is great but there are little to no classic drum parts from him that spring to mind whereas Dave has 1 million. Also, very few tracks from the Bostaph years where mainstays of Slayer's setlist, even when Paul was in the band.
I guess you've never listened to Paul on Divine Intervention, or his song Gemini (with Slayer). Also listen to him with Exodus, Testament, Forbidden. No slop, total relaxed, controlled playing. I've played for 40 years (since I was 6) and he's the reason I play like i do. And also Nicko McBrain. Brilliant and much more creative players imo.
Lombardo has just a natural groove for this genre it's precise and it's got a loose feel to it. Wich makes the music grooves like mad.... The others are really talented and amazing musicians in their own rights. Slayer wouldn't have put a guy on the drum stool if he wasn't on top of its game
Dave is on Nr. 1 for me, he coined the Sound of Slayer and thrash beat. I really liked the fills and double bass of Bostaph on Divine, and I didnt know Dette until today, but he seems a tight player!
I wish Jon Dette had done one album with Slayer. I think he's phenomenal. I've been a Lombardo supporter from the start but having seen the drum cam footage of Jon Dette playing "Chemical Warfare" - I would go so far as to say I've never heard it played better or tighter. The man is an absolute machine.
Lombardo plays with feeling. Really in the groove and plays with a but of a swing. Paul is just pure power and brutality. Lacks most of the feel and groove from Lombardo's playing. Dette is a pretty good mix of the two. Dette brings way more to the table than Bostaph.
Dave Lombardo and Show No Mercy is why I traded my 1974 Gibson Les Paul for drum lessons in December 1983. Before Slayer I wanted to be EVH like Dimebag but what really made me want to play drums was his bass going off like machine guns and cannon fire, as a hockey goalie my feet wanted to play too. Paul is amazing as well.
Dave was an absolute beast and blew me away when I first bought seasons and it's still in my top albums. Paul on divine intervention was amazing and beat the shit out of that kit. Dette is a combination of the 2 and I would love to have heard an album with him
Dave was responsible for the speed, precision, timing and feeling of Slayers songs. There really is no comparison. Anyone can copy the greats, but there’s only one true original drummer for Slayer. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Here's my opinion on the drummers! 1) Lombardo is the original, no doubt about it. By that alone he is unbeatable. But we cannot deny his skill and precision. Even with the small times when he makes mistakes he always recovers from them again and shows the world he is the godfather of double-bass. 2) For me paul Bostaph is the better writer when it comes to drums. All the albums he was on had the best sounding drums and the best drum beats in all of Thrash metal I'd say. Plus Jeff wanted him in the band, you cannot talk against Jeff Fucking Hanneman. 3) Jon Dette as a drummer is the best out of the three, the youngest as well I'm pretty sure. I'm sad we never got a slayer album with him but he still kicked ass.
Most people will go with the original drummer. But Dette is just freaking awesome. Beats the other two, skill-wise. You can tell he's the "schooled" drummer out of the three. I don't know if his own drumming style would fit Slayer's music but I wished he had made at least an album with them. Dave has better dynamics and has this ability to make it look effortless every time he plays. Whereas Bostaph just hits everything hard all the time. I still love his drumming on Divine Intervention though.
Cuz Dette uses Danmar wooden beaters hitting them against METAL kick 🦶 pads which produces an "almost" triggered sound yet, it's STILL miked kick drums! Vinnie Paul, John Dette...LOTS of them guys (from the 90s METAL school of drumming particularly 😏🥁🤘), THAT'S WHAT they are known for and a sound that THEY pretty much pioneered as well! Rock ON 🤘😡🔥🤘
As a drummer myself all 3 drummers have an equally special ways of playing percussion obviously the double bass pedal kick back is so symbolic, there work with cymbals and snare drum is very powerful, both of the 3 drummers are brilliant, there is absolutely nothing between the 3, they are all brilliant.Dave Lombardo and Paul Bostaph I love but the three of them are genius 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
He trained in a tiny shed in his back yard for hours every day. It was covered with drums inside, even on the ceiling. No air flow at all. Just brutal.
Dave every time.. the other two are awesome but not got the same groove.. Dave has a sound that is almost 'organic', powerful and groovy that the other two mimic but don't sound as good... All three are ace though
All amazing drummers. Jon's attack is unbelievable. Lombardo's timing and Buddy Rich like fills makes him my favorite. Jon that guy is probably one of the hardest hitting drummers up there with Bonham and Chuck Biscuits (DOA, Misfits Social Distortion) Dude must have a sponsorship for drum heads.
Paul Bostaph was GREAT on the 1st Forbidden album. A good guy also, he treated my teenaged self very nicely when I was lucky to meet him outside a show (about 100 years ago, give or take a decade). A real nice man, and a beast on drums. But still (!) Dave Lombardo is the person I wanted to play like. All I cared about was getting my double bass playing even a little close to the speed of Raining Blood, Angel of Death or Silent Scream.
MAN! This was cool and interesting. I caught a few minutes while it premiered but had to leave and finishing now. I seen a few of these from Paul and Dave's channels' before but I have to admit I never heard of Jon Dette and just read his Revolver interview... hope I don't lose my "SLAYURGH CARD" for that? I'm not going to say any is "better" cuz obviously they all totally SLAM and it's a tough comparison with this footage cuz I think Paul's angle and audio is bad and we can't see or hear the footwork but I know I LOVE the albums he wrote his parts and played on. Dave wins by default cuz he wrote the damn parts and still slays it and Jon is pretty unreal and energetic and adds some extra feeling & flare.
Sadly Paul doesn't have many good sounding videos but if you look past that you can tell he is an amazing drummer. His drumming on the albums he did is amazing but weirdly he plays different live and he uses (in my opinion) a really shit sounding kit live. Dave is a pioneer of the genre and an amazing drummer aswell. Jon is one, if not my favorite drummer of all time. His style is similar to Dave's but turned up to 11. His kit sounds amazing and his speed and super accurate drumming is unmached by the other two. He also played with slayer AND anthrax the show those clips were from. So he had to play like 60 minutes with anthrax, 20 minute break and then 90 minutes with slayer. The man is a beast. Edit: Also Paul messed up the angel of death kick fill when I saw him so it wasnt a one time thing in that clip.
@@thrashmetalkid6669 Holy Shit! I read he played with ANthrax, I didn't know it was the same damn tour! Yeah, he's super tight and fast! Yo, I seen ur last 3 covers and that talent show today when I saw the premiere coming up, was fun man, good to see ur doing awesome!
Let me add a few extra opinions on these three. I think Paul bostaph is a better studio drummer than Dave. But Dave is a much much better live drummer. And Jon Dette is flawless live and in the studio.
@@thrashmetalkid6669 Hmmm, this may be true, I agree Dave does seem "better" in some intangible way live than what was captured on those earlier albums for sure but the budgets were much lower and everything was less produced I think than some of the luxuries of the modern world that more of Paul's recordings have had? I haven't seen either live on a full set or anything since 1999 and 1991!! ... but It's fun having this exercise in thought and analysis over something so cool, huh!
Dave è stato tra i fondatori, conosce gli intenti degli Slayer e ne ha formato lo stile. Ogni batterista che lo ha sostituito, seppur bravo, ha dovuto mantenere la sua linea.
I go why back to slayer days when the wore eye liner. It was heart breaking when Dave left people wondered will they be as good losing a God a double bass genius, of course they were. But Dave was killing before the others. Dave is a speed metal Ingenuity genius. Suicidal groove master.🤘🤘🤘🤘
Dave is the OG of slayer. His contributions can never really be equaled. Jon plays with a sincerity and aggression. Paul has his own feel and it’s respectable as well. They all 3 put an edge on the slayer tunes.
Lombardo=Punishing drummer, solid groove, seems to really enjoy himself when he is behind the kit, always! Bostaph=Technician of the drum kit, solid, benchmark perfectionist, age is showing in his bass kick. Dette=Rapid fire stamina, brutal timing and over basher. IMO Lombardo was definitely my favorite of the 3, I always enjoyed watching him play, you can see and feel his positive energy flowing and just seems really in the groove and again benchmark technique! They are all 3 amazing in their own way, I'd definitely be honored to have either of them play in my band if I had one! 😋🤘🏾🔥
I know it's stupid, but I prefer Lombardo because I'm old and he was the drummer when I discovered Slayer. Plus he lives in the desert town next to where I spent 30 years and I had the pleasure of meeting him once when he played at a local place with his band Fantomas.
@@thrashmetalkid6669 You didn't even post Dittohead....you posted a basic Disciple song that was on that album. Yet you gave Paul a simple double bass clip from Angel of death and he butchered it. Like sounds like hes got 1 peddle. Then you're going to say the Dave butchered Ditto? come on.
@@Bitchesgivehigh5s That's because there's no clip of Dette playing Dittohead. How can I compare them if there aren't clips of all the drummers I'm comparing playing that song?
Lombardo has the original Slayer groove so he`s the number one. Bostaph is overrated and sloppy. Never liked him. Dette is very professional all around metal drummer. You can put him in any metal band and he delivers. As said because of that original Slayer sound and groove, Lombardo is our man here.
Paul just looks way to stiff. Like a robot. I agree one Jon. Dave just has it. Hes done it and he hardly looks like hes struggling back there. Hes adding fills and they sound amazing. Dave clear cut winner.
@@Bitchesgivehigh5s It is like who could ever replace Nicko McBrain in Iron Maiden? It is simply impossible. He`s sloppy as hell and so is the rest of the band. The point is they are sloppy together and the synergy and groove is just there.
Dave has always been the best with Slayer he's also one of the founding members and Dave wrote these songs! it would be like asking Dave to play something from divine intervention I'm sure he would be able to do it but Bostitch wrote those songs...
All three are amazing. You know this simply by the fact that they all filled in for Testament at point or another. Dette is definitely the underdog here, but his performance surpasses Lombardo and Bostaph in these clips. he has the energy of a young Lombardo, and precision of Bostaph. Lombardo will always have an advantage because when he was in Slayer their music was fantastic. When Bostaph joined he not only nailed Lombardo parts perfectly, but always had the misfortune of having to polish the turds that is their newer music.
@@thrashmetalkid6669 That's the best among the last three for sure, but I seriously suggest to you to give Seasons in the Abyss and Reign in Blood some more spins ;) A whole different level
Paul Bostah is my favorite. I respect all the history with Lombardo, but I think he didnt evolve as much as a drummer. Dette was a nice surprise here. I dont recall seeing him play.
