Sledge Hammer the Funniest Cop Show Ever!

Sledge Hammer debuted in 1986. It was a 80's TV parody of cop movies at the time and was essentially a comedic clone of Dirty Harry. Sledge Hammer is the funniest cop television show you will ever watch in your lifetime! Sledge Hammer starred David Rasche as the main character. The actor appeared on the other network's show Miami Vice, a series he would directly compete against, just a year before in the episode, "Bushido".
Anne-Marie Martin starred as his partner Dori Doreau, a detective who, while having a level head that strived to keep Sledge Hammer out of trouble, still had the ability to use violence, mostly martial arts, when necessary. Of course, Sledge, loving any type of violence, almost seemed to fall in love with her the moment he saw her use her karate skills.
Sledge's boss, Captain Trunk was played by Harrison Page. Trunk was extremely aggravated with Hammer and would constantly scream out Hammer's name while pacing back and forth in his office to great comedic effect.
The show had great critical response and fans loved it, but it only lasted a couple of seasons due to the fact it was constantly put up against the highest rated shows of the 1980's like Miami Vice, Dallas, and the Cosby Show which was the highest rated show of the entire eighties.
Sledge was almost canceled the first season, but when they had him accidentally blow up the entire city he got higher ratings on that season finale enough to convince ABC to give him one more chance.
The Incredible Hulk's Bill Bixby directed eight episodes and even appeared on one episode as a crazed convict. The series is definitely worth re-watching or watching for the first time, especially if you love crazy cop shows that like to go way over the top.
The entire Sledge Hammer TV series can be owned on DVD. Get it at Amazon to help support this channel - amzn.to/3I8Lst5
Also, as mentioned in the video, check out my Caveman Comics book series on Amazon - amzn.to/3Egurfe
And also as mentioned in the video, check out my other channel for great family friendly cartoons - / @fradycatcartoons
Thanks, and have a great day.

I believe Hammer was more resembling Hunter. Dirty Harry was more of a lone wolf, while Hunter had McCall as his partner, just as Hammer did with Doreau. His slogan, "Trust me, I know what I'm doing." also echo Hunter's, "Works for me." Both were uttered at the end of opening credits.

"Sledge Hammer!" is undoubtedly one of the funniest and most underrated sitcoms of all time, bar none! Along with the criminally short-lived--but equally hilarious--"Police Squad!" (which starred the late, great Leslie Nielsen and also spawned the successful "Naked Gun" trilogy), "Sledge Hammer!" has truly stood the test of time! I own both seasons on DVD!

That's actually pretty amazing to me. It's always intrigued me at how much American Tv has been shown in other countries but how little tv from other countries we get to see here. As an aside, I married a Japanese woman in the 90s, she told me they had a channel dedicated to American tv. It was all reruns of course but any time I would mention a show she knew what it was and it's how many people of her generation learned how to speak English. Anyway, greetings from Oklahoma/United States. Take care

We had a failed private TV station here in Germany that could not afford much further production, but did hold to their frequency slots as their last valuable asset as long as possible. And one of the things they still seemed to have was a license to airing Sledge Hammer episodes, so they did run two or three every night for a year or two. Great times :)

I read it somewhere that tv stations usually purchased the rights to air tv shows indefinitely. So they can put it in loop and play it for a decade if they are desperate enough.
@hartmutholzgraefe8043
@hartmutholzgraefe8043 28 дней назад
@@gorilladisco9108 Probably depends on the popularity of the show, but knowing that Sledge started very poorly both sides probably said "whatever" ... and German VOX was *very* desperate at the time of the nightly binge runs. The station was basically just a shell at the time, serving their "program" from a video tape robot rack only, and desperately hoping for a new investor before the rented frequencies were up for renewal ...
@gorilladisco9108
@gorilladisco9108 28 дней назад
@@hartmutholzgraefe8043 I only knew it from when MacGyver was popular some thirty years ago, local newspaper in my town wrote that one of the TV stations bought the rights to broadcast it in our town indefinitely for $3,000 per episode (which was a bargain even then, because locally produced tv shows at the time typically have price tag of upward from $10,000 per episode, and those were what we now know as podcast). Perhaps the contract model was changed. Maybe. I don't know. Thirty years is a long time to pass.

Simply put, ABC scheduled "Sledge Hammer!" directly opposite very heavy competition throughout its two-season run from '86 to.'88, first on Fridays at 9 pm against both CBS' "Dallas" and NBC's "Miami Vice" during season one, and finally on Thursdays at 8 pm against "The Cosby Show" in its second (and, sadly, final) season.

"Trust me! I know what I am doing!" I loved Sledge Hammer so much. David Rasche (pronounced RAH-she) was perfectly cast, and Anne-Marie Martin was a gorgeous lady who could hold her own against the baddies ... AND Hammer. An 80s Get Smart, the characters are wonderful, and, like Get Smart, it succeeded as a parody as well as a comedy in its own right. I knew that Bill Bixby directed several episodes, but I forgot he appeared in one. Truly a great series. And you have GOT to give credit to a show that got away with that second season premiere, especially when no one expected they would actually **get** a second season! No spoilers from me - watch the video! Also, something I only discovered recently: Under the name Eddie Benton, Martin also appeared in the 1978 Doctor Strange TV pilot. Which was terrible, and totally misused Martin -- her character in the comics was an extradimensional princess with her own magical powers, but she's human in the pilot. She was cute, though.

@@tvcrazyman That's because Alan Spencer, the producer of Sledge Hammer, was deeply influenced by Get Smart, and was actually influenced by Get Smart's producer, Leonard B. Stern to make the show a reality on HBO. However creative differences between HBO and Spencer caused the idea to be shot down. ABC offered to greenlight it, but they had to tone down the violence and add a laugh track. Spencer did not approve of the laugh track, because he finds them as we hear in the Season 1 DVD "offensive, as they tell you when an audience should laugh at something, especially at a series that was meant to be a drama." But he agreed to have the show broadcast on ABC. Thankfully the laugh track was removed from the Anchor Bay DVD sets.
