The best thing on Sleep is you can see clearly they are playing for themselves. They don't care if you don't like the same fucking riff over an hour. They just do it and go crazy doing this. And this is the magic. They put you on the same mood.
That is the reason, i dont know how to play a guitar by theory, i just grab one, start making sounds slowly, like a generarive software, reprating and changi g bits of the sequence, hsving a good time while i smoke that weed 😎🌿🔥
@cannabico6good times bra. Improv and flow are the best. With or without bandmates, with or without a looper. Isallgoood with that guitaracanniboid pulsation 🤘
up there with Jack Casady's golden era with Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna in the late 60's-70's. listen to "The house at Pooneil's corner" or "sunny day strut" or "sunrise" by the jefferson starship
For those out of the loop... 00:00 The Sciences 02:48 Sonic Titan 16:18 Dragonaut 23:04 Holy Mountain 33:37 Aquarian 41:12 From Beyond 55:16 Antarcticans Thawed 1:08:11 Dopesmoker (excerpt)
Dragonaut should enter the f***ing rock n roll hall of fame as the greatest riff ever written!! I can remember the first time I heard it. Totally blew my mind. I had no point of reference to music that heavy (and groovy!!) at that point of my life
He uses 20 inch rides that where cutted from 22 inches.. I don't know how to put that sentence right so I hope you understand it :D So... The thing is that he has developed his own sound within drums, he's fucking great hear and in Neurosis.
@@g32.recitales as someone who makes them, making a 20 out of a 22 would only make it a 20 and wouldn't change a thing...you've been deceived lol and from what this band plays....lol you're all deceived.
@@nasticanasta Really? Jason himself told it. So fuck off, besides if you can't tell the differences between a regular 20 inch cymbal from a 20 inch cutted from 22 cymbal you are doing something wrong dude. Go check your ears.
Copying Byron Grimlock's set list just so I don't have to scroll so far down when I watch this video DAILY. SLEEP RULES 00:00 Intro (Excerpt from "The Clarity"?) 02:48 Sonic Titan 16:18 Dragonaut 23:04 Holy Mountain 33:37 Aquarian 41:12 From Beyond 55:16 Antarcticans Thawed 68:11 Dopesmoker (excerpt)
Unless you play this type of metal you have no idea how difficult it is to play and how each rhythm is distinct and heavy and the way they are seamlessly blended together is pure artwork on the guitar and amps .... ;)
I don't play anything. But I sure as fuck still appreciate this amazingly well-done recording of a live set featuring some pussy-smashing whisky-guzzling stoner doom gods
Beef Cake I find it more of a smokey journey through hasheeshian ridden rhythms. Seriously, read their lyrics. It's nowhere close to pussy smashing whiskey-squadoodle. "The molten fire flowed up toward Zion Flight of the Nazarene to seek the Cheribum Rides out believer with the spliff aflame Marijuanaut escapes earth to cultivate"
I don't know who you mean by "the man", but I'm assuming you mean Matt PIke. I'm pretty sure he is just using the Marshall. The only amps I've seen him use are a Green (Matamp) head (during his time with Sleep), a Soldano SLO-100, a Marshall Kerry King JCM800 (for a short time) and a Blackstar head (for a very short time). This video was from the time when he was using the KK800 - so I doubt the Orange or the Mesa are his.
Yeah, that's what I saw. Also, that they were side by side, when I'm assuming they were headlining and any opener's gear would have been potentially pulled aside. The internet (yeah, i know..reputable) also says he has used orange amps, though I don't know when and what. Either way, the tone is great.
cr0c0stimpy Considering the kind of band sleep are, I wouldn't be surprised if they're seriously using them all, the tone certainly sounds like they could be anyway.
Crowdsurfing during Dragonaut was one of the most fulfilling moments of my life. I love this band, I love everyone who was there, and I most of all love that I had the oppurtunity to witness this.
@@justinnemesis1It's a three-way tie between Sleep, Kyuss, and Electric Wizard. All three are incredible bands and pretty much created modern stoner/doom metal
I've been listening to Sleep studio recordings here and there for years... but damn, you can't appreciate them fully until you see a live performance. I can't believe I've waited this long to seek them out on RU-vid. I sure hope I get the chance to see them in person someday.
Simply amazing!!!! I adore this band. I've never heard anyone come close to this. Such a full, solid, positively, lumbering, hard swinging, monolithic, fuzzy, groovy sound.
I think Antarcticans Thawed has to be my favorite song they've written. Creates such a dark, ancient, brooding atmosphere with this ominous, rising tone in the background. Plus it ties in with Lovecraft which is just awesome. Such a good band.
Agreed, I would go as far as to say that "Antarcticans" is refined and shortened variation of dopesmoker in some sense, It shows that track was written at the same period in bands' history
had a total mental breakdown on acid whilst listening to antarticans. i didnt chose the right people and they scolded me 4 minutes into the song. "alright, we get it!" they said! i was so high, changed me forever. everyone sucks. music is all i care about and this shit is top. now im in a band pursuing my passions
So many times in the past I hear a really heavy rhythm and I'm like wow I want to hear more of that keep going, then the song changes and the rhythm is gone, what I like about this group is that it keeps the same heavy rhythms going over and over so I finally can get enough of my "Crunch" fix that I want when I listen to music ... ;)
You can definitely hear how Electric Wizard got their sound from this band. It's like an overweight black bear who's eaten a bad mushroom; slow, fat, meaty, uberfuzzy, and seeing purple dragons and blue dwarves.
My best friend showed me this band about 2 years ago. We're going now together for their concert in Manchester, UK in October. This is our number one band. We both will be stoned listening to these riffs for sure and I will be covered in tears of joy on that day. Thank you, friend for showing me how to Sleep, best dream ever. "An ounce a day, lightens the way".
For me, alot of the appeal of this band is actually seeing them play. I love the way he plays guitar - strumming it with so much...purpose? Just makes it all sound heavier, somehow.
Such intoxicating music, a real conduit to take you to another mental place. It reminds me of a gig I went to a few years ago, a solo show by Colin Stetson (an experimental sax player). I could tell that he goes into a kind of 'flow' state while performing, and in between one particularly long, difficult song and another I was close enough to the stage to hear him softly say "I wish you could all feel what I feel". To me, that said it all - he performs almost more for himself than for the crowd, and that is exactly why it's excellent. The best musical acts do this, and Sleep is no different. You can tell they're just IN IT, in their own sonic behemoth creation.
Me too brother (was it 2012 here?...)! Corner Hotel Melbourne Australia. Groovy brutality and SO MuCH FUN!!! Had waited since the 90’s to see them! Earsplitting!
Just saw them live for the first time tonight. Fucking best show I've ever been to. These two dudes behind me kept passing me a one hitter every so often and kept me high throughout Sleep's whole set. I never wanted it to end.
The bass tone is fucking tremendous, from a video it sounds like one of the best I've ever heard so I can only imagine how hard it hits live. I need to see these boys live to feel the sonic assault in person.
WOW, A LOT HAS HAPPENED IN my life since that fist "dragonaut" view from the film"gummo"musicalizing that sensless life of those kids, living in the middle of nowhere, without somebody to take care of them, without mercy...sleep playing in the background as another character in the story.... back then, i thought this band was just my kind of stuff : greasy, soliled sound , along with those ever importan for me bizzarre lyrics, to create a surreal atmosphere, dense and hypnotic, damn, the stuff nightmares are made of.... certainly, stoner bands are not for anyone, but for the ones who love them, this is like that "perfect storm" so many are looking for, with or without "substances" this is sacred ground...ALL HAIL SLEEP !!!! thanks for sharing this , man....
only just heard them recently and still had to be won over from the little I had heard. This vid won me over big time!! Awesome sound, vid , songs. Big thanks
Oh, stop with the shirt shit, will you? Not you - but the thousands of shirtless Pike comments. He actually sports some nice, classic platted shirts on recent interviews. Yo! Don't mean to disrespect! Peace!
The overlooked magic to their sound is the drums playing as far behind the beat as possible. They are the only band I can listen to again. Just like 25 years ago.
