I once heard Fiona Apple's music described as "post-grunge" and I'm pretty sure that's why I love it. It's timeless rock with soul and edge and ferocity of both creative spirit and musicianship (Sade meets Tom Waits); Fiona BROUGHT it, and I bought it. Hers is a wonderfully grounded adult perspective (especially considering her first album was written in her late teens) in a world of angsty Pans. Feminism? Oh yeah, but in the form of raw competitive brilliance on all fronts; her art transcends such labels.
Here is one of my early favorites, hope you enjoy!
