Sleep Training Method (no crying it out) Mom of 5 // Scheduling, Naps, Breastfeeding

Today I get to talk to you about sleep training. I just finished sleep training my fifth child. He’s now sleeping eight hours a night at a time! He’s been doing that for the last week. This hasn’t been the case for all my kiddos. My goal is six hours by six weeks. My first was born at only five pounds and a few ounces, so we didn’t get him sleeping six hour stretches at a time until eight weeks old. Regardless, I follow the same methods.
I get asked a lot of sleep training questions since I did a video on this channel after I sleep trained my second child and it got a lot of views. I want to say that I am no sleep training expert at all. I’ve actually never read a book on sleep training. My mom had eleven kids and she sleep trained all of us from birth. I basically do everything she told me to do that she did. I have done this for the last few kiddos. It has gone better, smoother and easier each time. I have also learned a few things over the past few kiddos.
I’m excited to share these things with you today because my son was “sleep trained” with zero crying it out, literally not even 60 seconds. I know that can be very stressful for a lot of moms. Hopefully what I share with you is helpful in “sleep training” from birth. I put it in air quotes because it’s not really sleep training. It’s helping your child get on a different schedule than what they were on when they were in your womb.
This video is not intended to change anyone’s mind. There are different types of mothering. I think they can all be very successful. They can all be healthy for baby and mama. I find that this is the easiest way for me to not only get sleep, but for me to avoid more trauma for me down the road if I am trying to transition an older child. Sleep Training doesn't have to be a nightmare if you start early, and hopefully some of these tips will help you get some more sleep too!

An occupational therapist at the hospital where my son was joked that the reason all the "safe sleep" methods prevent kids from dying is because they just don't sleep. Can't die, if you don't sleep. I'm glad you were willing to say you tummy sleep your kids. It's such a taboo subject, us moms that do usually keep quiet.

Loved this. We trained all of ours, 13, 10, seven, and two. They also always slept on their tummies. Dr. Denmark was a pediatrician here in Georgia that taught moms how to do this, but ultimately to trust the Lord‘s leading and our instinct from Him!

I’m shocked to hear that letting your baby sleep on their stomach is controversial? I have 3 boys, pregnant with 4th baby. All 3 have LOVED sleeping on their stomachs, it’s almost like it’s just biological! I also STRONGLY believe that those who think this causes SIDS, also don’t look at stats of infant jabs. Those cause SIDS, not sleeping with mom or being on your tummy

I agree with this! We followed all the typical advice which says NO tummy sleep no matter what, and our son didn’t sleep at all until he could finally roll on his own and then started tummy sleeping.

Thank you for those tips. I have used those as well for my 5 kids (my oldest is 5) and I would just like to add: - Not all babies are the same. The character of the baby and his underlying issues (allergies, reflux, stomach cramps) are huge factors as well. After having had 5 babies in 5 years, two of which had colic and cried all the time, I have estimated that 80% of baby's sleep behaviour is determined by baby itself and only around 20% by your sleep training efforts as a mother. - The implicit message in this video is "just implement these tips and your baby will sleep 6 hour stretches in 6 weeks". That's just not how it works. Babies are not machines. - The reason I'm writing this: I don't want moms to be discouraged or to panic if they implement this method and it doesn't "work". That said, I have found sleep training a very helpful tool to have some anchors for you as a mom. Use it wisely.

Thank you for sharing this. I definitely think there are things that can help babies sleep and "train" them. But like you said, every baby is different. Our last baby had tongue and lips ties, and everything looked different for us. I think these things can be guidelines but moms should not be stressed if they try these and they don't always get the same results.

I’m mama of 3 living in Australia from African background. Growing up in Africa I saw my mother tummy sleep and all the aunties does it too. I got yelled at by a midwife for tummy sleeping my baby here in Australia at the 4weeks home visit. I was really in shocked, how midwives in the west based they training fears and do and don’t. I kinda get it there a place for do and don’t, specially if a mama is substance abuse.

Thank you so much for this video Katie! I'm pregnant with baby #2 and have been adament about sleep training this time around as my experience with my first was very exhausting and difficult due to following anti-sleep-training influencers on social media. They made it seem that sleep training is unspeakably cruel and always involves excessive crying and that breastfeeding isn't compatible with sleep training. What I didn't know is that some babies will not sleep through the night all the way to 2 years of age and if you just sleep train from the beginning, you can save yourself months of bone-shattering exhaustion. I HAD a village and it was still unbearable, nearly throwing me into postpartum depression.

I've always done "on demand" nursing but I've had a couple snackers- it's not only frustrating for me because I was constantly nursing but I found it really messed with their digestion and even weight gain. "Holding out" a little to help them get a full tummy full of milk was really helpful in correcting all of those problems at once- it's not bad to help them along a little with scheduling!

My babies had oral ties which complicated my efforts. We have 5. The youngest is 7 mmonths and has both a lip and tongue tie. After her diagnosis I realized that 2 of our older girls had them as well. We're now doing exercises to help and considering a revision so that she can get as much milk as is available. Getting these diagnosed is crucial to implement sleep training effectively. No full tummy - no long stretches of sleep. She now breastfeeds and bottlefeeds the breastmilk she can't draw out herself. It has helped a ton and now I'll be implementing your strategies as she's very used to waking during the night. Even though she now eats some solids. 😂 Thanks Katie. ❤

Helped them sleep so much better and helped with acid reflux and trapped burps. I don't like sleep training a baby, bc i think it's too early for them to be separated from mom and get into a schedule. I know the mom needs rest, but im not mentally ready for that. I have 2 boys and i didn't put them on a schedule bc since im a stay at home mom, i can work it out. As they get older i introduce little by litle. But i dont judge who does it. Everyone is different.

I never sleep trained my babies , im a mom to eight I nursed in my bed and they fell back to sleep easily and I did as well. I am wondering if it isn't beneficial for the baby to be put off for a feeding and held off to go to sleep till mother is ready so early in brain development. I do feel like a baby will naturally fall into a longer sleeping pattern at a couple months old without all the fuss of sleep training.

I have a 7 week old. I really needed to hear that sleep is not linear. He did wonderful on weeks 5 & 6 and then the last couple nights he has been having shorter windows. I’ve been letting him fuss and I give him a paci but I think I’m going to do a dream feed instead of trying to prolong the middle of the night feed. Also, he sleeps on his tummy for all his naps but I think you gave me the courage to try to have him sleep on his tummy during the night as well. My first born is a tummy sleeper.

@@abigailwilkerson5284 He’s been sleeping through the night for the most part since about 12 weeks old. However, it’s not perfect. Some nights he wakes up once or twice and I have to put a paci in his mouth but he hasn’t needed any milk during the night since he was about 3 months old. He’s teething now, so that doesn’t help, but overall still a good sleeper. Also he shares a room with my toddler which is a whole other transition that we underwent around 4 months old.

First off, thanks Katie for sharing your tips and experience with everyone. My second baby is currently 10 weeks and I just wanted to put my own experience on here. I watched this video before she was born, and felt hopeful for sleep to be better this time around. (My first experience was awful and I had really bad PPD) I followed as many of the tips here as I could. However, we do use a pacifier, and my baby can barely stay awake for an hour and a half at bedtime, much less 3 hours haha. And I have a very difficult time putting baby down drowsy but not asleep and having her fall asleep on her own. But I did do every 3-hour feedings since about a week old, tummy sleep, and also did awake time after nursing instead of nursing to sleep as often as I could. I really wasn't sure if it would work but I figured it was for sure worth a shot! In the earlier weeks, we were getting 4-hour stretches at the beginning of the night, and I was hopeful for that to get longer. Unfortunately, we hit weeks 8 and 9 and it seemed like baby's sleep was getting worse instead of better. I was hitting a wall due to sleep deprivation and started experiencing some really troubling PPD symptoms. Out of desperation, I started on an antidepressant and I bought Taking Cara Babies' Newborn sleep package. We also moved our baby into her own room so that her movements and grunting wouldn't continue waking me, and because our room is much brighter than hers. That was 4 days ago. Using the methods from Taking Cara Babies I have successfully put my baby down awake to fall asleep twice in the past 4 days, but all the other times it hasn't worked. (Meaning; she cried and didn't fall asleep. Which gets stressful, especially when I'm emotionally fragile, and afraid that if I don't master this I'll never sleep again😅) In just 2 days I went from 3 feedings at night to only 2 (3 and 5/6 AM instead of 11/12, 3, and 5/6) which is encouraging. The strategy from TCB is basically try to hold baby off as long as possible so they get used to feeding less at night. Even though I'm not nursing till 2:30 or 3, my baby is waking up 4 times before then (usually starting at 12ish) and then going back to sleep when I give her the pacifier. Because I am somehow who does really really poorly with lack of sleep (hello PPD lol) I do plan to do formal "cry-it-out" type sleep training at 4 months if we hit the sleep regression or sleep is still not going well. I hate the crying as much as any other sane mama, but I know that it will be so much better for everyone when it's done. Anyway... this may not be the place to share all of this but I wanted to openly put my experience out there in case it helps any other mamas who may be struggling OR just want to hear from others' experiences.

This is almost exactly what I do too..... One extra thing I would add: I heard that depending on what time of year it, of your baby wakes between 4am-6am it's because they're cold, as that is the coldest time of the morning. Then since they're awake, they want a feed. I have always found this to be true for my baby and super helpful for getting her sleeping longer at night.

Goodness I wish I had this info when my daughter was a newborn. My family is all in the attachment parenting camp and gave me zero good sleep advice. My daughter is now one and still cannot sleep through the night. It's funny that we call it sleep training, because no matter what you do, you are "training" your kids to sleep a certain way. She doesn't sleep because I trained her to wake up and comfort feed all night long. Number two is on the way and I will be doing EVERYTHING differently when it comes to sleep. Thank you for the advice!

Thank you sharing all this! I love how much detail to added. I am expecting my third baby and still feel very clueless in the area of sleep! We are looking to do things different this go around since my first two are still terrible sleepers. What do you have your baby wearing to bed when they are sleeping out of your bed? Just footie onies or sleep sack? I always feel like my babies are cold but like you don’t love swaddling. Thank you again for all the information!

Thanks so much for this! I really need some help/different approaches to this so I loved hearing your breakdown! Question: do you do the 3hour feeds all through the day up until they eat? Like newborn-6months? Does that gap change?

Did all this with my first and she was sleeping through the night at 2 months. Now Im trying to sleep train my twins...whole different ball game. 2 weeks old and got in a 4 hour stretch last night but most nights Im nursing back and forth from like 1am-6am. One day I'll sleep again lol

4 out of 4 of ours were tummy sleepers 😅 we encouraged tummy time to strengthen the neck, and as soon as I observed them turning the neck safely in the sleep, we put them on the tummies to sleep (in a safe place with just them and a tight sheet). All of ours sleep trained with almost no drama, and all slept through the night by 2 months old!

@thedupontnest considering tummy sleeping for my next! Desired to do it for my first but unfortunately I went down the rabbit-hole of mainstream medicine SIDS videos and got scared! About what week have you put your babies on their tummies? I think I noticed at 4-6 my son was decent at lifting his head. I did notice that if you wait too long and then try to make them a tummy sleeper it feels very unnatural for them and your window is missed!

@@kelseyrosendahl27 I began putting them on their bellies once they had good enough neck control during naps that I could watch during the day! About week 2-3. I didn’t begin doing it for my first till she was about 4-5 weeks old because I tried till then to do back sleeping and we were desperate for something to work 😅😅 and she transitioned fine!

Thank you for your video. I will have to re-listen and take some notes😊. However, did you talk about after nursing on the time schedule, does your baby stay awake for a certain time, then you lay them down awake or drowsy, but not already asleep? At what age do you begin this? How long are their awake times between the feedings during the day? Thank you

Thank you, Katie! This has been very helpful. I enjoy all your videos. I have a question. . . what clothes are best for tummy sleeping? I live in Germany and we use sleep bags here. I wasn't sure if the sleep bag puts more pressure on the chest. Maybe they are popular in America as well.

I've been hoping for this more detailed video on this topic from you! Thank you so much! You say that the baby will likely want to start going to sleep around 8:30 or so starting at 5 or 6 weeks.. Question, about what time was baby going to sleep before 5 weeks? Also, for the dream feed, you don't specifically wake them up right? You just get them out of bed and put them on the breast, right? Thank you!!!

As a massage therapist if I were to sleep my baby on her stomach I would turn their head different each time including when I'm holding them on my shoulder because I know how tense muscles can get if they are only turned on one side vs. Changing sides

Hi Katie! I sleep trained my boys, four of them, but started at say five or six months - and we were BIG fans! Even my adoptive son (who was severely drug exposed) responded really well to getting solid sleep. Anyway, I just had my fifth son in June and I took your sleep training advice from previous videos and WOW it worked beautifully. My sweet baby sleeps fantastically eight hours at the least! I’m so thrilled with the rest I get and my energy to care for all my boys. Thanks!! I’m a big advocate for sleep training, but now I understand how it’s easier as an infant. I have a quick question: we always noticed a regression in sleep around four/five months, do you notice it in your babies despite having been trained since birth? Or is that not really a thing if already on this routine? We’re not quite there yet and I’m waiting to see. Thanks for sharing your life (some) with us! 😊

I was wondering the same thing about the four/five month "regression." I had a super difficult time during this stage with my son. Nothing I read actually helped, I was just told repeatedly to wait it out.

We’re at the five month mark now, and our excellent sleepy son is in fact challenging the sooth yourself to sleep habit he’s previously master a bit. However, it’s only in the middle of the night, not at bedtime. And he’s doing well with being comforted quickly and shushed to sleep again. I think it’s all in how you handle it! But it seems like a normal numb in the road with those sleep cycle transitions.
@carrieperrigo2319

My 4 boys went through this at about 5 months too. It is very normal as they go through a growth spurt at this time. If you feed Tham when they wake up though, it will create a new habit. I found If you soothe them back to sleep when it starts, they will learn to eat more/ or more often during the day.

@monikagross8802
@monikagross8802 7 месяцев назад
I think a lot of these tips are normal feeding, but please keep in mind that every breast and body is different. So I had to nurse during the day way more often than every 3 hours to increase milk and we still needed 16 days until birth weight with both of mine! also one breast had issues to get milk flowing do we had to do accu puncture for that. Also baby wasn't able to drink all the milk with one feeding during a wake window. So they would nurse 2-3 times and then sleep again. So now we are at a pretty good sleep cycle, but I was cautios to sleep train in the early weeks. Another issue is, that my baby still is a little gassy somtimes but also burping is an issue. I always burp, but she keeps hiding some in the tummy and that disturbs some of the whole scheduling. But I don't care because she gives us enough sleep in the night...

I wish I knew all this before my last grandkid. I stayed with the dad- my son-inlaw- for the first six months ( my daughter died during the C-section) and baby was back sleeper and seemed to have tummy problems. Anyway, she didn't sleep thru the night til she was 8 months old. It was a very hard time.

Hi Katie, thanks for your video about sleep training. You said something about the possibility to go back to feeding on demand after training the baby to sleep through the night. Do you know any resources about that? Because all I found was the comparison of the two "methods" (scheduling and feeding on demand) and nothing about a mixture of both... I would be highly interested in that because we are right now considering to sleep train our third baby in the early weeks. After feeding my two bigger kids on demand I see both: disadvantages and advantages and I wonder if we could somehow do both...

2/3 of my babies have loved sleeping on their tummies too or swaddled so we do a combination of both and no pacifier. I think the advice of only sleeping on their backs is cruel because then NO ONE at my house sleeps! I agree sleeping on their tummies is better for spit ups too

Love this!! Such helpful advice. Quick question about day time naps: when you are feeding baby at the 3 hour mark, what follows after the feeding? Does the 3 hour mark occur after they wake up from a nap and in which an awake period follows, or is nursing typically happening prior to naps? Friends swear by the eat-wake-sleep routine, but I always find my babies nap much better when napping follows nursing! THANK YOU

I know that if you've taught your baby how to put themselves back to sleep nursing to sleep is great! I've observed that as they get older if you put them in their bed asleep then when they wake up they can have a hard time going back to sleep. I've read that after 4-6 baby needs to be full awake when you put them down! But obviously everyone's experience is different! I know from 4-6 months nursing baby to be a little bit drowsier before getting put down helped us not get hit hard with that regression!

I would love to know what you guys would recommend for a 2 year old who wakes up during the night wanting to crawl into bed with us and tosses fits if we do not allow him to climb in? Both our 2 and 4 year old also wake VERY early and sometimes that is 5 am and we need more sleep or tips to keep them in bed longer. With our four year old we have some ideas but no ideas for our two year old.

I’m in need of some advice for 2 yr old sleep. My two yr old wakes up between 5:30 and 6:15 am and wakes my four yr old who he shares a room with and sometimes my 6 & 8 yr old who are in the room next door. He cries loudly when we make him stay in bed which is what wakes the 6 &8 yr old. Four yr old use to sleep through him waking up but now he jumps straight out of bed as well and he is so tired and his behavior suffers from the lack of sleep. It has become very frustrating with a tired house. We put off food until after seven but he still wakes up early . We’re trialing dropping his nap which was for 1 - 1 1/2 hrs and put him in a twin bed yesterday. Is this normal?? I told my husband I needed advice from a mom of eleven who’s trialed many things to know how best to handle it!
