That was actually intentional. Apparently it was supposed to be creepy. She’s an abusive parent who wants a “perfect family” won the custody battle over the kids after her husband left as revenge for divorce despite abusing a boy into becoming a girl. I mean even look at Ricky who is a pretty normal boy, but in a way where he’s actually very violent and mean, even if he cares about his family and friends. The fact that him being the killer is set up is enough to prove that.

This review was my introduction to OTSR two or three years ago. I then viewed all their videos, which offered insightful and often hilarious analysis of films. Gary and Iain’s channel is the first and only channel (so far) that I am a Patreon of. Their love of horror and science fiction in particular and films in general has provided much entertainment for me and many other fans. Cheers Gary and Iain. Thanks for the reviews. 😊😊😊

After watching this review again, I've come to the conclusion that one of the things that make your reviews so enjoyable is that you have that same quality that Siskel and Ebert had of being even more entertaining when you completely disagree about a film.

I think this movie could benefit form a remake actually. Still, the ending is probably one of the scariest things I've ever seen. Yes, I know I'm lame but fuck it. It really got under my skin :P
@xxrocketshark216xx4
@xxrocketshark216xx4 6 лет назад
silja lin the ending is kind of freaky if only for the mask they used of Angelas face. That and the noise. But the twist itself makes so little sense and would still be really lame even if it did make sense so i cant take it seriously

I think it depends on when you watch it. I watched it when I was about the same age as the kids in the movie, probably not long after it came out on VHS and it SCARED THE LIVING SHIT OUTTA ME!!!! That noise!!! The expression on the mask!! ( I prolly didn't realize that it was a mask back then!) There was virtually nothing on TV about homosexuality back then let alone Transsexualism!!! It fucked with my head on a whooooooole different level than anything I had ever seen!!

Our super-PC culture today could NEVER handle a remake of this movie with all the same elements and themes in tact. And I don't think a remake could recapture the unique charm this film had.

I saw this on Cinemax with my older brothers around 1990-- I was 10ish at the time; the ending absolutely terrified me. I remember I had to sleep with a Bible and the lights on! LOL I think it was a combo of the sound she's making, her face, and the shock of seeing a hairy cock-- but I was traumatized. Re-watching later on as I got older, I could barely get past the dialogue and the cop with the fake mustache. Still a good 80's "midnight movie;" or at least one you can recommend to other Horrorphiles. Thanks for doing these!

I enjoyed part 2 and 3 far more than the original. We need to kickstart a new movie in the spirit of the 80's with the same quality and equipment , I don't want it looking all shiny and modern. Mostly practical effects. Check out "The House Of the Devil" It's a *perfect example* of how to do an 80's style movie with that classic atmosphere in modern day. It wouldn't be too hard to reach a good enough financial goal for a movie of that style , that's the beauty of it we don't want a bunch of CGI just smartly done old school.

Lol. 3rd one, she was impersonating a camper, not counselor. And its really funny because they keep telling her she is so old looking and looks like she had an awfully rough life for being 17. Turns out she's only 21. Also, they werent there for drug rehab. Long story short to minimize spoilers: Owners wanted to "experiment" and have rich kids and poor kids come together in one place and hang out? Understand eachother?

Dreadful films, hysterical review! I always thought it was Ricky AND Angela as the killers as you say, both driven mad by their Norma Bates style mother. The most horrific things in this movie are frankly the fashions, couldn't be more 80s if you had ET playing Pacman. The twist isn't that original, Deadly Blessing did the same 2 years before. I'm amazed you didn't review the F13th/NOES movies as you did Hellraiser and Halloween?.

Great review! My theory on the crazy aunt is that Peter's dad was her brother, and maybe she caught him with another man and that's what made her clearly unhinged. So when she took Peter in after the accident, the aunt was determined to 'protect' Ricky and not have Peter grow up to be like his dad, she thought that raising him as a girl with the angelic name Angela would 'snuff the gayness' out of Peter and he therefore wouldn't corrupt Ricky.
@Hammerhead547
@Hammerhead547 6 лет назад
The bit where angela and peter are sitting in peter's bed after they presumably watch their dad and his boyfriend have sex sort of suggests the idea that angela may have either tried to have sex with him or actually had sex with him afterwards which could explain the panic he/she had when she and paul started making out because his/her first sexual expedience may well have been against his/her will at the hands of an older sibling.

I gotta say, I saw this when I was nine years old in 1990. My family would not let me watch horror movies, so I had never seen Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm St etc. I never saw one of them until The Dream Child and Jason Takes Manhattan (awful!). This was actually my first horror movie. I saw it while sleeping over at a friend's house, and we did a marathon of all three. To this day I will always jokingly recommend these movies to anyone just to spread the joy that is the transsexual psychopath Angela Baker. The two sequels are just pure camp, and need to be watched as comedy. When Angela tells Molly that her boyfriend is on TV, that was pure gold. Snow Boy calling his counselor a "Dildo" was the first time I had ever heard the word - it became my insult of choice to an age group that also was unfamiliar with it. It wasn't until years later that I actually learned what a dildo was. Pamela Springsteen whipping out a guitar and singing the I'm a happy camper song. My brother and I still know it word for word.The Sleepaway Camp trilogy will always hold a special place in my heart When I turned 11 and graduated grammar school, upon graduation we had to vote on our favorite things; music, actors, food etc. Basic Instinct had just come out, so Sharon Stone won as the class' favorite actress. I voted for Pamela Springsteen

I love sleepaway camp. Then again I love campy horror which most slashers are. I know it's bad and badly acted. Something about it stays with me... it's not the twist. Is it because it's a camp film? It's not the daisydukes. Is this the case of so bad it's good because I hate Seed of Chucky and Freddys Dead. I think it is a legit guilty pleasure.

Lots of comments about the ending, and rightfully so! Now here's another: I used to think that eerie facial expression combined with that growling and hissing meant Angela was now possessed. Yes I've since learned the consensus is she's now completely out of her mind. Demonic-looking face... nightmare fuel indeed!

I believe that they tried to gear it to where both of them were The Killers because Ricky does have anger issues and like Ian said anyone who interacted with Angela ends up dead but at the same time anybody who ended up getting into an argument with Ricky with him snapping and cursing like a sailor, they also ended up dead. I've seen this movie a few times and each time I keep thinking to myself Ricky is so over protective of Angela why wouldn't he fall in line knowing she was a killer Keep in mind he was raised by the same whack job aunt/mom. Angela was thrown into a lifestyle that could have made her snap but Ricky could have been absolutely out of his fucking mind way before Angela ever showed up at his house. His cursing seemed inappropriate even for an eighties movie even though when I saw the movie I laughed a lot at a kid cursing because prior to this the movie the Bad News Bears came out and there was one kid who didn't stop cursing throughout the whole film. Although they kept pointing the finger at Ricky I don't think it was a red herring because he had so much rage within him that he could have been her partner in crime and he knew she couldn't control herself so he would try to protect her during the day because she would have killed someone in front if everyone, proven by the sequels, but at night when he wouldn't be there or couldn't be there for whatever the reason, Mel beating him up comes to mind, Angela was set loose. Unfortunately this movie has severe chronological problems so we don't know exactly what time the hair curler was used and that's the nicest way I can say that, it could have been well before Mel beat up Ricky.

Reacting only to Sleepaway Camp (not the sequels): A lot of the bad acting can be blamed on poor writing. Fucking Lawrence Oliver couldn't make that dialogue work. Despite having seen this film only once in 1986, I can still remember most of it vividly. Not saying that makes it good or bad, but certainly a memorable film. I owe that to some very interesting concepts (albeit, poorly executed). Gender ambiguity and sexual confusion causing the psychic break of the killer is a novel approach, IMO, especially because the seeds are sown so early and regularly in the movie. Intellectually, I was engaged in that element of the story, but obviously not enough to warrant watching again. lol

Exactly. I think the twist wasn't so much that Angela was the killer, because her behaviour and being bullied throughout by the other girls (and to a lesser extent) boys at the camp set up her taking revenge. The whole gender identity /sexual confusion aspect of the movie was really well done. The acting is kind of poor and 'campy' (pun kind of intended!) but the premise and how it was set up throughout the movie with hints at Angela not being all 'she' seemed was good. The twist was that Angela wasn't Angela, not that 'she' was the killer. You've got a killer who is a boy who has lost his father (who is gay and has been witnessed having sex with his boyfriend) and sister in an accident and has been left to live with his Aunt (who is certifiable), and who makes him live as a girl for 8 years, only to find himself attracted to another boy. A much better premise than is given credit for.

The first time I watched this movie was during the summer of 2002, on VHS. When the movie ended I took the tape and broke it with my bare hands.
