Just so you know, this film is set in medieval times, and Aurora is a literal princess, meaning born one, so the big celebration in the beginning of the film is completely accurate. It was called a christening, and usually the name of the baby was offically announced to the kingdom at the celebration too. They did it a week after the baby was born, because of the mortality rate, they wanted to make sure the baby lived.

Also Maleficent's dress was one quite true to late medieval style in northern Europe. She wears a "houppelande", a gown with heavy folds of fabric, a high waist, and those long, long sleeves. The "feathers" you noted were called dags, cut edging to make the sleeves look more dramatic. The edges could be cut without unraveling because fabric was so very tightly woven. Even her headdress was fairly true to the era, early fifteenth century, with the "horns" made to look diabolical like long goats' horns rather than more sedate, somewhat horizontal ones like those of cattle.

Not only that, I think the King and Queen had difficulty conceiving and hinted that the Queen was nearing menopausal age. Aurora would be their only child and the only heir to Stefan's throne.

I still love this version of Maleficent. She exudes evil for the sake of being evil. I mean how evil do you have to be to curse a baby because you weren't invited to a Birthday Party? Right? Maleficent was, and is to this day, one of my absolute FAVORITE villains ever. She's elegant, well spoken, doesn't look like a classic hag (think the Evil Queen's other form in Snow White), etc. She was the first villain to make me realize that evil doesn't always look and sound evil, or need a reason for being so. And the fact that she turns into a dragon? *chef's kiss* That was the cherry on top. XD

This was the most expensive Disney animated movie at the time, costing $6 million. Why did it cost so much? The director insisted on shooting on CinemaScope, 35mm double frame negative, which is twice as big as the regular frames. In terms we can understand, It’s basically like making it on 70mm, just for IMAX. This was the second highest grossing movie of the year, but it still lost Disney a lot of money and it took several re-releases to make it profitable, and Disney cut animation personnel from almost 600 to a bare bones of 75 employees. This was the last Disney animated princess movie for 30 years, until The Little Mermaid in 1989.

What I really love about this movie that this is essentially the first time we got an actual personality for the prince. Philip was very much a step ahead from Snow White and Cinderella’s love interests (until the third movie for the later years anyway.) even if it wasn’t much, it was a big leap and made him stand out as his own character. I think that from here on they started actually giving the love interest a personality and it’s a nice change.

And it was such a shame too. Anglina Jolie looked amazing from the trailers, like a true live-action depiction of the character. I was hoping that they wouldn't go that "sympathetic" route with the character. If they wanted to show why she became the way she did, I wouldn't be against it. But doing so takes away from the mystery of the character. Not everything or everyone needs an explanation. It would like trying to explain why Sauron turns evil. Sometimes a villain being evil because they are when we meet them in the present story is more than enough.

Fascinating thing to note: I had this on DVD back when it was first released in that format. It came with behind the scenes info and extra stuff that I was fascinated by. Walt Disney hired 4 different artists for this. He took them out in nature and had them all paint the same tree but how they saw it. The vision each had was drastically different from each other. Their styles were then combined in the film. So if you noticed the difference in the art specifically from scene to scene, that's because it's actually different people doing that. It's most obvious in the forest scenes with Aurora.

Maleficent's dagged sleeves (ie the wavy edges on her sleeves) are a decorative thing. It was very popular for a pretty long time, so her dress is actually very fashionable. Not for the 14th century though, but you know, not many of the costumes are accurate in that respect, most are either 50s clothes, or 50s versions of 'medieval' clothes. Nicole Rudolph (and other costubers) did a pretty good recreation of the dress, it's both screen adequate (it gets very close, since it's animation) plus a dash of historical accuracy. :D

So the animators made a conscious effort to make everything straight lines when animating this film. That why the bushes look blocky. If you look closely you'll notice everything is very rigid and straight, including the way many of the characters stand. For the action sequences they actually hired actors to act out choreographed scenes on film and then animated the movement. There are some documentaries about the technical making of this movie that are very interesting

This movie is my favorite classic Disney, and mainly because Maleficent. She's the best classic villain, hands down. And I read somewhere they were inspired by german expressionism to make the art on the details. Anyway, this for me, still stands to the test of time.

YES!! So glad y'all have finally watched this one and are loving it! It's just SO one of my very favorite older animated Princess films. 💖☺ Aurora is close to my heart👸. And the difference with this is she has her Prince fight a huge Dragon for her and the kingdom.😁 Maleficent is very evil to be bothered to put an awful curse on a new baby, just because she was snubbed. 😖😒 The fight between her and Phillip is just one of the most iconic to me for it's time.🎥✨✨ Was fun to see your reactions during this.

This was my first Disney movie and still my favorite. Aurora is my favorite princess but Belle is a close second. People dislike Aurora because she's not in the movie much but in the movie she has some amazing moments. She's thoughtful, caring, she dreams of romance shes funny and playful in the dance with the animals, she has a strong morals. She loves Phillip but still returns to the castle to marry a mystery prince to prevent conflict. She was willing to sacrifice her happiness for the good of people she doesn't know.

Aroura was my favorite princess solely becaus I loved the artistic aesthetic of her movie so much. The medieval style clothing, the painted backgounds, the beautiful colors, the voice acting, the songs, the characters personalities, all of it I LOVE! ♥ It saddens me that so few people like this movie or even consider it when thinking of Disney princess movies when it was so well made. Also (unpopular opinion) they did this story dirty with the Maleficent movie, I get why people liked it but, when compared to this masterpiece, it really fell short for me.

I really wish we'd gotten a live-action Sleeping Beauty that gave Aurora and Philip more screentime to develop their bond. I didn't like all the character changes in Maleficent. A detail I would've enjoyed was the fairies magic spell allowing Aurora's spirit to guide Philip to her and assist him like the fairies did. Kind of like in LoZ: BotW.

Don’t worry, they did in the sequel but I never liked how King Stefan was flanderized as a bog standard “kill the heroes” villain (coincidentally, his original counterpart is considered too standard as well) and when Queen Leah became more bland and dull as she dies later in the film, which goes to show that her live action counterpart is even worse than her original counterpart

The background design was by Danish artist Kay Nielsen, who was a renowned illustrator in the early 20th century. A lot of his work was in book illustrations of Norse folk tales and legends, which tied in really well with the medieval period of the film. He previously contributed concept art for the Night on Bare Mountain sequence in Fantasia.

first disney movie i ever watched, when i was 4...still my favourite to this day. the backgrounds were so different, the colours...everything. and then of course touches like Phillip and the horse or the musician getting drunk haha and yes, Phillip is my fave Disney prince cause that lil idiot is funny, was ready to marry a peasant and ruin relations with another kindom for it, fought a dragon with zero doubts...and he could sing and dance hahaha and aurora too. she cried a bit but then there she went to follow her destiny and duty even if she had just found something in her life she actually wanted to experience, aka knowing someone except her "aunts". "aurora may be my favourite princess" ok, so, eternal love for you

Aurora's beauty and her song (voice) are magical gifts from the fairies. That is why she is so over the top graceful and has thus out of this world opera voice. I think Disney did a fantastic job on creating this very special Disney Princess. She's my favourite princess character by far.

Idk if already someone said this. But all that trama with the "blue or pink" dress was and actually argument the animators had when they were choose the color dress. In the Disney Park and in the merchandise, you can see her with the pink dress, because in that way the people doesn't confused her with Cinderella (blond hair with blue dress)

I love the set design for this movie, how everything has a medieval painting look to the backgrounds. But I also think Prince Phillip is the best Disney Prince, at least of this era. He has real personality (remember as a young prince he arched an eyebrow at baby Aurora?), he sings & dances w/her, stands up to his father about marrying her, & rescues her & has a wonderful mischievous horse, lol. There’s a video here on YT about the making of Sleeping Beauty if you want to see any of the BTS footage.
