I spent a year in a house that wasn't insulated without running the furnace. Ran the AC in the summer but I wrapped water lines with heat tape and let the rest run its course. It's amazing how much body heat we create with caloric intake and blankets. Slept the entire Illinois winter with no furnace, space heaters, etc. Just wrapping myself up at night. Amazing what we can actually get through when the mindset is getting through the night.
I live in Illinois the fact that you survived is really something to be proud of! Our winters are HARD. Just one reason of many I'm thinking of leaving this corrupt State. Blessings
@@Cubs-Fan.10 yes mY Son lives here & a lot of family so I get it- but my health (Arthritis. ETC.), is just getting too hard for the winters! Blessings I wish you the BEST
@@ericlikestowander7510 a lot of them stay in Minnesota because other states don't have the social benefits they get here or they are just so mentally wrecked they can't even figure out how to live past day to day
I have a farm about 80 miles from where I live. My brother and I put a Lowe’s storage building in the woods as a hunting cabin. We insulated it very well run LED lights off of a solar setup. we use a small gas heater and it’s warm as can be. It doesn’t get as cold in Alabama, so mostly the 20-30s at night, 40s during the day.
I'm from the Jackson hole valley up by Yellowstone. I am now addicted to watching these winter night videos! 50 years ago we were doing this without even a tent, digging snow caves. I guarantee you all of this gear surely would have been appreciated back then ☺️ I'm an old lady now so I can only live vicariously through y'all! I do turn my thermostat way down when I'm watching though 😏
That’s awesome Diane, sounds like you’ve had some fun! Turning down the thermostat before you watch winter camping videos is epic, what a way to feel more in person! 😀
I would love to see more car camping in the rain when the weather permits. ☺️ those are my absolute favorite videos and watch those of yours on repeat!
Love the video. One observation if I may : I am ex US NAVY , well trained in fire fighting. " NEVER PUT YOUR FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT behind the fire source. If the place catches fire it would most likely be at the fire source. The first thing that goes through most people's mind in a fire is to get out, there for the fire extinguisher should be placed by the door exit. You can then fight the fire and have an exit plan in case it all hits the fan. Also place all the fuel cans away from the fuel source. I'm not a safety nanny, just thought I would share some useful information. Stay safe .
Why didn't you hang blankets over the windows? That would make it a lot warmer in the shed! I like your channel and hope you have good luck with it. Steve Wallis and Joe Robinet are my favorites! I am a 69yr. old woman from midcentral Arkansas. My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I love all this kind of stuff!
@@TolbersCamping so the whole point of tapestries in medieval times was to create a barrier between the cold stone of a castle walls and the air that has been heated by the fire. When I was in the army me and my battle buddy would each pack an extra shelter half in our ruck sacks when we had to be out in the field during cold weather exercises. This allowed our shelter to have a double and created a void space between inner and outer walls. In my own home I use this double layer method with Windows by have a second curtain of lightweight felt material in the upper floor bedroom windows
I love how you started this video! A little crispy toast and the cozy lights! I love how your videos are creative and then you get almost a behind the scenes look!
a good investment is the inline filter for the propane hose going into the lil buddy heater, it will save you from a lot of problems... (experience talking).
That was fun. Something else fun to try is setting up a tent inside the shed, more cozy camping feel. I set one up in my garage last year was fun, I did it mostly because the neighbors complained that I had a tent in my yard when I was doing some winter camping testing.
Honestly my wife told me to do this recently and I thought it was a funny idea but didn’t see much of a point in it. You telling me to do it also kind of reassures me to just do it. I’ll try to make it interesting lol thanks
Watching this video again. Noticed that you mentioned Steve Wallis. So sad that he lost his wife! Bless you and keep on making these shed videos. Love them!
Loved the video. I am getting my cabin/shed ready for snow storms here in upstate NY. Now I am sure to insulate my 10 by 16 cabin and not cheap out even when we will be using a wood stove. The smell of a wood stove is fantastic. If the lights go out during an epic storm there will be no worries about keeping warm which is why I got my cabin. So thanks for the information. I was debating just using my Mr. Buddy Heater and now I know a wood stove is a must in below zero tempatures! Thanks again this video is JUST WHAT I was looking for! Joy
It would help to put bubble wrap on your windows. It's amazing how it keeps the cold out. And in the shed, use a sleeping bag and a pop up tent to sleep in. You will be surprized at how cozy it is.
Yeah thankfully the next day when it warmed up it all dried up because there’s a lot of ventilation with it not being insulated. I definitely wouldn’t recommend using propane all the time as heat source because it puts off to much moisture. Insulation and better heat source coming soon
I know i would not have anything in front of those double front doors in case of a emergency. you do have a pretty good set up and you love your daughter, you mention her several times. Best of everything
Love the video I watched the original when you slept in the shed with your daughter. I want to start doing more outdoors things like yourself I love it I use to camp and fish a lot when I was younger. This summer I plan on doing some backpacking and camping trips with the wife here in the south. Stay warm my friend and happy camping!!
Bro do it, anything outdoors away from the normal life is such and amazing experience and recharge. Thanks for watching and wish you guys happy camping! ⛺️
@@TolbersCamping got any tips for doing any winter camping or backpacking don’t get me wrong we don’t get as cold as you down here but still gets cold and thank you
Yeah I just did this the other night, the video will be up soon. I just used the small electric heater inside the tent and it got super warm quick even without hater in shed on
I have one of those propane convection heaters in my tent Garage (10X17). I put it on high when it was -5 outside and the inside at waist level got to 80 degrees. I put it a bit above low and was comfortable at about 70 degrees. The convection heater is 30K to 80K BTU.
Iived n a shed for 3 years I had an electric outdoor extension cord running from my burnef out trailer for two years I insulated it as much as I could lots of people helped me thank God it was :8 by 12 feet I had a tv fan heater n light got cold tho I got water from naybors used porta potty n peed n plastic jugs n had hotplate n small fridge it worked
Put the fire extinguisher near the door. If it’s behind the heater you could get burned trying to reach it. Great set up, would love to have a sleeping bag like that.
That's why you need insulation. I lived on a tent for a year and a half in the cold in the heat in the rain in the snow but I insulated it. The only heat I ever had was an alcohol stove that I made from a couple of soda cans, that's the way I cooked also, I never got cold and I never got wet. I built all my furniture out of Pallets. I really enjoyed the experience.
That’s awesome you stayed warm and dry! Now that I’m starting to like hanging out in there and have room in garage for stuff in shed I’m probably just going to insulate it, get electric hooked up, heat,ac, microwave, mini fridge and so on. Should be a fun spot to hangout during a storm this summer
Very cool. Great shed and I love grilled cheese sandwiches. The farmer has a shed our there I've been thinking about doing some camping but it has a mouse problem right now so I've been a little hesitant lol. Well I enjoyed your video and I really love camping too. Take care and be safe Sir. Bye
Your videos are great homie let there be no doubt I love watching from beginning to end and that's cool that you let us all in on some of your future plans things like picking up a side arm... I don't own one at the moment and when I was younger I was never fearful but doing a lot of camping nowadays it might be wise to carry a piece with you my homie!
Thanks bro and not only protection against animals but just in case I bump into some crazy’s in the woods, I want to be prepared to defend my friends/fam
@@johnbarber7952 definitely do it! Not sure if you’ve already done your studying, but if not I highly recommend the pilot institute. Totally worth the small payment for course.
Congrats on everything. 10mm will be good enough just bring bear spray as your first option the gun as a last resort. Don’t forget to buy a good holster and belt for it. Just keep on making vids. Anything outdoors with good food is always entertaining. Maybe camping with food and stuff from the dollar store with a budget just an idea.
Thanks and I do enjoy watching others do dollar store runs to camp and cook with lol. Yeah seems bear spray is generally the best go to and I always have it on me. I just like the feeling of having a pretty powerful pistol as a back up and at least be able to fire off a shot to scare something near by
You can refill the 1 pounders using a regular propane tank. It it just takes a special attachment and you have to put freezer the 1 pounder before filling.
I have my big buddy for a couple of years now and just got the Mr. Heater hose and used it last weekend it was amazing. We were at our trailer it was -17 felt like -26 with the wind chill and my big buddy did amazing. I’m new to your channel 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I lived in a house built by my dad most of my life. No insulation. House was about 80 yo. Thankfully it was in North Texas. Mostly mild winters compared to a lot of other places.
Looks like a cozy place to sleep I can’t sleep in my shed it’s full of junk and bugs and spiders and mice something to do on a boring winter day camp out in the shed looks like fun to me
Yeah I understand. The winter is the best time as there shouldn’t be many bugs if it’s really cold where you live, plus could clear out an area in there.
New subscriber and playing catch-up on your videos. Love your content!! Your dogs are sweethearts!! Hope you can take them camping with you sometime. 🐾🐾♥️
Can’t wait to see you camp out there with insulation and the difference that makes. Also I hope you get a stove out there and cook on it! That would be pretty cool too!
Bro I’ve just recently got the desire to start making the shed a fun hangout area, so you may see some videos of it shaping up and getting the insulation done.
Hey Matt I subbed a few weeks ago and enjoy your content and style. I find your videos very relaxing and I learned a few things as well. God Bless - James
I'd be interested in seeing any camping videos. I have friends that live in Minnesota and I'm looking for places to camp before and/or after I visit them.
I’ll definitely be camping tons of places all over Minnesota and I try to make it pretty clear about where I am. I like to camp multiple spots at each state forest to really get a feel for it before I venture farther out
Make sure to get the mr buddy filter for that propane connection or you will foul the heater. There is a propane filter for that setup and always make sure to shut off tank and let heater run out the fuel or you will damage it. Take my word on it!
Hey Donna, I love Florida. Great state to live in. I’m sure it’s nice to get a little colder weather down there sometimes as it always seems pretty hot when I’ve been there lol
Yeah I ordered the filter couple weeks ago and still haven’t received it lol. Thankfully the mr heater hoses have a lot less of that oil than most but hopefully the filter shows up soon
Not boring at all, very eclectic gathering of different aspects of the same problem, you got alot of people thinking and stimulating sales of stuff you need to be ready, and you are giving good practical examples that ordinary people can try, without difficulty or skill, just read your instructions! Or listen to a tutourial or Product review and get a consensus of what is best, you gave so many choices,so that shows you don't have Favorites.. that's good! Un -biased and Dis-pationate! Original!*
That's pretty cool I live in a 20 by 30 shed and it has insulation in the walls and plywood on it but there is no insulation in the ceiling and it's not closed off completely. It's 22 degrees right now and 74 in here but I have 2 electric space heaters running non stop. I gotta get the insulation in cuz that light bill be high during winter and summer
That’s awesome, but yeah you definitely need insulation in the ceiling because all the heat rises and will escape that way. Electric heaters running non stop will definitely run the bill up lol
The empty one lb propane cylinders can be refilled with an adapter and a large propane tank. The one lb cylinder has to be empty to safely refill. I heard good things about buffalo bore 10 mm ammo for wild animals.
Yeah not sure I want to refill them as I won’t be using them much anymore and they’re not meant to be refilled. I’ll mainly use my 20lb tank and they few times I may need a 1lb I’ll just buy it. Yeah that ammo sounds good, I know you want hard card for deep penetration with bears
There's also "limited" insulation, you can do, that doesn't really cost you. you can hang curtains or even blankets up over the windows and around either side. those create an air gap, and prevent the heat from going through the window a lot. you can also hang them over/infront of the door That simple thing can increase the temp quite a bit.
@@TolbersCamping Its something thats been done for well over 1000 years, by poor and noble alike. Tapestries were not just decorations for manner houses and castles... they were used as insulation. Curtains over windows often went right down to the floor, to keep cold air from the window from mingling with the hotter air in the room. Even poster beds surved that purpose, with the curtains around them acting to keep the heat in the sleeping area after the fire went out. Sometimes simply looking at the past can give people idea's how to survive in the present.
Yeah I may just buy a few that are meant to be refillable. It seems many people have no issues refilling these one, but just the fact they’re not meant to be and it’s illegal to transport them I might not go that route.
Nice. I love a good grilled cheese sandwich every once in a while. I like dill pickles with mine. I think you are more obsessed with lanterns and stoves than I am. LOL. I have more flashlights than lanterns though. Was that flashlight the Fenix TK16 version 2? That's my planned next one. I also like my heater buddy, but I have just the small one and a Coleman catalytic heater. Looks like you had a lot of fun. I enjoyed your video and just subscribed today. Thanks
Thanks Barry! Yes I have the Fenix TK16 version 2. Flashlight is amazing, makes it like daylight in middle off the woods. Video does not do justice as the camera closes lens to balance light as your turn it up. Both mr heaters are great, sometimes the big one is overkill plus weighs more so I’ll just take the smaller one depending on what I’m doing.
