Hey I'm actually 23 and thinking of starting a rotating shift job i don't like the job but I'm starting because of good pay do you think it's advisable to work night shift for over 3 years?
@@pythyte8419 I would never work night shift ever in my life again. It messed me up. I believe the number one reason I am now once again struggling with health issues. Its majorly stressful on the body. I wouldnt If i were you. If you value your health dont do it. You will have the people that actually say the like it but just look closely at them... diabetes, high blood pressure, unfit, bad home lives with family. I can go on lol
I worked the third shift from 1992 until 2013 and never had any issues. I worked from 12-8am, slept between 11am-6pm. It was actually awesome. I am totally a night person, a creature of the night. It's quiet, peaceful, cooler out with no sunlight. I loved it! I may go back to living like that when I retire. I always find myself staying up until 2-3am anyway. I hate the day time.
Hubby works 7P -7A at the ER. Keto has been the only WOE that has allowed him to lose weight and keep it off . While others eat their Domino’s he eats his Fathead pizza :) He has lost 48 lbs .
Hello Dr. Berg I just made a comment on one of your other videos in reference to being a 3rd shift worker. I’m a third shift worker I work 7pm to 7am. Can you please make more videos for us. I especially would like to see one on suggestions for intermittent fasting schedules for a 3rd shift worker like myself.
When I worked third shift, I drove home with dark sunglasses on so as not to see the rising sun...especially if I was driving East...right into it. Like Dr. Berg said, the circadian rhythm sees natural sunlight and wants to wake up. If I avoided looking at the rising sun I found I got to sleep faster in the a.m.. Of course, don't wear sunglasses so dark you aren't driving safely. I just had to drive East to get home me from work in the morning...
This video reminded me of the days when I was a teenager and my father worked rotational shifts until he decided it was better for him to take the option of staying on 3rd shift all the time. He wasn't trying to lose weight but I do remember him being grouchy and tired all the time while he was stuck on that miserable rotating schedule, because even though he stayed on one shift for 2 weeks, he never really had much of a chance to get used to it. He did end up using blackout shades in the bedroom and trying to keep it as dark as possible while he was trying to sleep after working all night on 3rd shift. Back then the worst things we had to deal with were florescent lights and loud construction equipment. Nowadays it must be a lot worse.
Thank you for the tip on the app to reduce the blue light. Phone time before bed is one of my biggest issues as I love to read articles. Tried every other way to fall asleep just doesn't work for me I usually lower my back light but still can be bright. I will definitely look into these apps. Thanks again
Try working 24hr shift with fire / ems running 10 or so calls a shift... getting woken up by a stupid loud alert tone that rockets you our of bed then having to rush lights and siren to lord knows what... I would hate to see our cortisol levels, in would imagine adrenal fatigue.... it's no wonder obesity and cardiac problems are so rampant in our line of work. Good video. Thanks.
20alphabet I am not sure what stayed in school is suppose to mean.... if that is saying that I took a low level job without any real education I assure you my masters has been well applied to my progression in the fire service... I hope that I am misinterpreting that comment.
My husband was put on night shift for 12 months and towards the end (after months of lack of sleep)he developed a psychotic condition. He has no history of psychosis in his family. Sleep is critical for our physical and psychological well being. Please anyone considering this type of work be extremely cautious as it will effect your body's circadian system which will inevitably lead to a rapid decline in physical and mental health.
Chris Jennings I worked 12 hours in a paper mill days and nights. I'm sure it wasn't always that stressful, but my point is you still have to take personal responsibility for your physical condition. I thought firemen and EMS were required to be in top physical condition?
Hello Dr. Berg, can you make a video on how the body changes mentally, physically, and hormonally while changing to a night shift. I recently started working 1-9am and have class from 1130-430 or 130pm-520pm. Please help and thank you.
I work 3rd shift for many years. Tired of it. But no choice. I have adapted keto and OMAD In the last couple of months. Very hard. But somewhat successful. Have lost 20 lbs. But feel stuck. Can't get regular sleep ever. Just keep trying i guess. Need more videos on third shift.
Rotating shift work destroyed my health, in my 20s. I was constantly exhausted for so long, I got used to it. It was normal. I forgot what it felt like to not feel that way. I was an athlete and incredibly healthy before those shifts. Shift work should be illegal. At least the rotating kind. It's inhumane.

@@pythyte8419 Honestly, from a health perspective, I wouldn't recommend it. It will affect your health. I can't say how much or in exactly what way. My job was physical. If the job you're considering isn't physical, I would guess that you'll probably do better than if it was a physical job. I know some people who have worked rotating shifts for decades at the same physical job that I did and they are doing relatively okay, on the surface. So, there's that. Who knows what long term effects it will have on them. Also, they say they're tired all the time. One thing I did was I stayed up and did other things when I wasn't at work. So, instead of getting the sleep that I desperately needed, I would often go out or stay up and play video games or go to the gym, etc. If you take the job, get as much sleep as you can to mitigate the effects of the rotating shifts. That will make a huge difference! I think if I had done that, I would probably be a lot better off. Also, don't workout when you're tired! Also, when I was tired I would eat crappy food. So, I'm sure that contributed. Eat the best possible diet you can when working a rotating schedule. Whole foods. Not refined crap. I also don't know your financial situation or how much you'll be making. Maybe it pays so well that 3-4 years of being tired is worth it to you. Maybe after that you'll get a normal schedule and you'll get paid more. You've got to consider it all and decide for yourself. Good luck!
@@pythyte8419 If it was me, I wouldn't do. I'd find a different job. But, if you need the money, then you might have to take it. At least for a little while. You could take it while you look for a different job. But, nobody knows your situation better than you do. You've got to decide for yourself.
I work third shift 6p-6a. I have developed high blood pressure and anxiety. I usually sleep 6:30-230pm. Wake up and work out. Dinner at 5pm and breakfast at 1am. I fast from breakfast to dinner. I lost 30 lbs but I still have the HBP and abnormal heart rhythm. Some people can do night shift for years while others just can’t. I like the night shift but my health has tanked. I need to find something else to do.
Hello Dr berg i work night shift 2 nights a week. My hours are frrom 730 pm to 730 am. How do i incorporate intermitten fasting to loose weight successfully. I usually work 2 day shift from 730 to 1930 followed by 2 night shift from 1930 to 0730. Looking forward to your reply . Thank you
To be honest I really do not know what's going on with my life! I have trouble in sleeping I don't know why I am still alive and able to go at work with my condition. It's really hard in a graveyard shift. But still Im hoping this video would help me and those some videos of Dr. Berg regarding vitamins that helps us fell asleep. The vitamin D3 and K2 😴
Dr Berg can you do more videos on this topic? I’m about tot start working the night shift. But I’m not sure how to manage IF with this odd schedule. Should I just keep my same eating hours?
The reason I ask what I ask is because it seems nobody is doing any videos about swing shift and it would be nice to have some ideas that would improve the situation, I mean I know we can't perform miracles but what would someone do in my shoes? My method is to just sleep as much as I can after every shift no matter the shift and then when it's time to go to first shift or 3rd shift I just go without sleep.
Im a nurse and work all three shifts - if my rota is really bad, I have all three shifts in the same week🙈 its really hard sleeping before/after nightshifts
I feel like I don’t have a problem working out , or getting sleep bc I treat every day like it’s my work day . But I just feel sluggish when I wake up but than I feel better when I start waking up .
More science less opinions! What do the studies say? Should a person stuck working 3rd shift change his schedule on weekends? I really doubt it’s healthy for anyone to change sleep schedules! But if studies show that it’s better or okay then express that and point to those studies! I’ve done tons of tests it appears that all my chemicals are fine but I have real issues with sleep!
My occupation is a wastewater treatment operator, when we do shift works we work 6 days on 1st shift, 7 days on 2nd and 7 days on 3rd, after the 7 days on 3rd we have 4 days off but then we have to start the rotation all over again. How can someone manage that and stay healthy?
Dr Berg, I do not do rotational shift work and I sleep very little. I often sleep 3 to 4 hours, then I am awake for 4 and might sleep 3 to 4 hours more. My question is does this help, is this enough? Is it equal to sleeping 7 to 8 hours straight? Do I get the same benefits as sleeping 8 hours straight when my sleep is fragmented like this? I rarely sleep 7 to 8 hours straight. When I do sleep 8 hours straight I am scrambling to remember what I did/ate that day so as to repeat it in order to sleep 8 hours straight again. I think I started sleeping more when I followed your advice and started drinking MRM Reload, then it finished and I didn't buy anymore. And then my sleep really started to deteriorate gradually. So now I started drinking this BCAA again and my sleep is improving again, but I still do not sleep 8 hours straight. I have your Sleep Aid. I have been reading an article that says that when you have soars, the L- glutamine in your body diminishes and this has consequences for your immune system. Dr Berg can you please do a video on this? I take so much supplements. Ashwaganda, Tulsi tea, Q10 and ubiquinol, I have a list. Maybe I take too much supplements?? Help! P.s I do Keto, intermittened fasting, but I am useally to tired to walk an hour a day. When I do I am so tired that I can only do the bare necessities of walking the next day. Thank you.
please check if you have Candidiasis , Lyme , any chronic microbe infection , being mold , bacteria , virus , protozoa .they all cause sleep problem , I knew a guy with candidiasis who couldn`t sleep at night , due to to the fact between 11pm till 4 am liver goes into a rehabilitation phase and because the infection has preoccupied it it can`t filter our neuroallergens and reactors from the blood (due to it being overwhelmed by the infection) so the neurons are kept agitated with no way to shut them off , same as when you do an intense exercise you had never done before and can`t sleep the night after.
I usually fall asleep between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. Then I will be awake till 7 and fall asleep till 11. And Dr. Berg said that intermittent fasting will help clear up these infections. So I am doing that too. I don't know however how long it will take to clear these bug out. Thank you so very much.
Can you help with 3rd shift and timing for intermittent fasting? It's hard to go thru a whole night(12 hours) without eating and then try to not eat before sleeping in the morning.
What would be a good Keto/ IF eating schedule for working 3rds? Sometimes I work 4p-12a.m, sometimes 12am-8a.m. normally I would wake up every day at 2p.m, and go to bed at 4/5a.m, unless I'm working until 8a.m, then I go right to bed when I get off. Tips?
How about those who ONLY works nightshift? How do we best adjust our sleep when we're off? I try to NOT go to bed the morning I get off so I'm very tired in the evening but sometimes I do have to sleep couple of hours and I will of course listen to my body. Is this a good idea or how do you guys do that only works nightshift? Does it put a lot of unnecessary stress on my body doing this way? My schedule is pretty generous aswell (I work 9 pm to 7 am) with one week very intense (5 nights with 2 nights off), second week 2 nights and then 9 days off in between so maybe that makes it easier.
Thank you! I am in Korea; I think Korea is making the most LED module for worldwide market. But, I am not sure where I can buy full spectrum light! :) I will try to buy it for my desk! Thank you!
I wrote a review and google told me this after i click POST; " 405. That’s an error. The request method POST is inappropriate for the URL /local/writereview?placeid=ChIJLbklSxuzt4kRoUNRSqLvUdc. That’s all we know."
I work 16-18 hour days 2-3 days a week. I get about 4-5 hours sleep during this time. I dont know how to work my macros on these days because i get hungry. Any advice?
