BMV is the main indie chain in Toronto. The BMV on Bloor is a three-story warehouse with all the nerd stuff in the attic. It also sells some secondhand but if you want the true cramped, dusty secondhand books vibe then Seeker's Books is a literal underground shop a block away. Or if you're doing things more centrally around Yonge then ABC Books.

I feel like most of my memories of Swordheart are just vibes, but that forest was eerie. I need to make more progress on The Will to Battle, but I think its pacing is a little more chaotic than the previous books. Which matches the whole decision of to battle or not to battle, but makes it so much easier to pick up Raven Stratagem.

Now that you’re living in Ohio again, you can get an e-card from just about any Ohio library system to use on Libby. The Ohio Digital Library, CLEVNET, Digital Downloads Collaboration, Dayton Metro Library, Toledo Lucas County Public Library, Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library, and the Cuyahoga County Library are some of the Ohio cards I use on Libby.

I already had the Cleveland and Cuyahoga when I lived in Boston 😅 they have my largest digital libraries but don’t always have my niche picks. So of my four libraries only Boston Public has the third terra ignota for ebook. I think the cleveland ones have the audio but I don’t want to go that route. The audiobook treatment is mixed on this series 😅

The fact that I remember nothing about the third act breakup in Swordheart makes me think my brain just deleted it and only saved the pure joy it gave me overall lol. Also, YES for House of the Dragon's performances being soooo good. I can't wait for S2! 🤩 Have a fun trip 🥰🎭

One thought I had, that I wish Butler had touched on, was weather maturity and cognitive ability is strictly a product of time vs biology. As in, she may be like 50, but her body is still that of a child, which would inevitably impact the brain function. It's not really a complaint so much as an idea that would have been interesting to have considered.

Not a bookstore, but there's a book themed cocktail bar in the Toronto neighborhood the junction (west end) called famous last words. The bar is made from scrabble pieces. They used to make themed cocktails based on your bookclub book if you met there, very cool place

Ooh some great books on that list !! Really need to read more Kingfisher as except that one book (the horroresque on in the antique shop) I've really loved their work. Cannot wait for HoTD on Monday (going to a watch party for it), as I was shocked how good it was. Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke are so bloody good (as was Paddy Considine and Matt Smith) and cannot wait to see what they bring to season 2. Also Team Black for the win, I support all their rights and wrongs !!

It is always refreshing when you get good acting in a show or movie. Makes you appreciate that there is a difference. I have read a few three stars and then read a four star book. Those three stars books really helped me appreciate how good the four star book was even though it didn't quite hit the five star mark. I'm thinking about rereading a five star book to get that high of reading a really good book.

You coming out as an anti-Stratfordian is so painful 😭 for real though, a lot of their arguments (to me) are "how dare a man who isn't noble write these plays" and just reeks of classism. Also, so many of the supposed other authors don't align with Shakespeare's actual output (like Oxford died before the Tempest was written for example)
@LiteratureScienceAlliance
@LiteratureScienceAlliance Месяц назад
I am not anti-stratfordian so much as anti assuming we know for sure who it is lol the book has lots of fun theories and I don’t think any are convincing but they all convince me that none of the evidence is strong. I am more mesmerized that its not a topic people are allowed to academically debate without so much controversy or hatred. There are also plenty of theories of people who are not Nobel but have more education that would help make the allusions and references in the works make sense

One interesting thing is, why do some people has doubts about who wrote Shakespeare's plays? That's a very modern idea. Nobody at the time ever doubted the man from Stratford was writing the plays. Doubting it is not heresy, but it reeks a bit of classism. Surely a country boy couldn't be the best theatrical author ever...
@LiteratureScienceAlliance
@LiteratureScienceAlliance Месяц назад
This was actually a large part of the beginning of the nonfiction, people have been questioning the authorship since the 1600s its not super modern, just perceived to be
@LiteratureScienceAlliance
@LiteratureScienceAlliance Месяц назад
I will say I care less about who wrote the plays than I do the lack of academic integrity given to the topic. Some of the theories aren’t even a nobleman must have done it. One is someone with a similar background to Shakespeare. Basically the lack of even allowing conversation feels anti academic to me. There is a section about publishing near the end that frustrated me a little lol. This book obviously has its bias of thinking shakespeare is not the author but I found the way it laid out all the theories for and against the authorship of shakespeare and other candidates pretty plainly with minimal emotion, which I value in research
@Lekktu
@Lekktu Месяц назад
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance I also value objetive research. I've read a lot about Shakespeare, his life, and the authorship question, both for and against. And the impression I always get is that the anti-strats dismiss every argument and historical fact (like Ben Jonson's "sweet swan of Avon") as "not a proof" while they build a castle of speculations over a lot of shifting sands. Anyway, it's a debate we won't settle here. Sorry for the intermission. Great video, btw.
@Lekktu
@Lekktu Месяц назад
Also, if we want to debate, it's better to turn to Kit Marlowe. Now that's an interesting character, a great author with a life full of mystery and unexplained things... ;-)
@LiteratureScienceAlliance
@LiteratureScienceAlliance Месяц назад
@book so that’s my favorite theory! (Although I am still not very into picking one the data isn’t strong enough for me for any candidate) It’s one of the last chapters of the book so I hadn’t gotten there yet when filming. There is also a fascinating computer code that was used to finger print author styles based on word length and Marlowe and Shakespeare are nearly identical with that test. But I do think I come from this less from a Shakespeare lover (although I do love his poems and plays) and more someone who dislikes how the higher academics have dealt with the subject matter. It reminds me of stubborn PIs in the sciences.
