Slim Concealed Duct Mini Split Install

We recently replaced our single-room Ductless Mini Split with a Slim Concealed-Duct Mini Split system to provide AC and heat to the whole house (~570sf) in a more energy and cost-efficient way than a traditional central HVAC system. This was our first time dealing with a ducted system and we were presented with a number of challenges along the way. It was a bumpy road to the finish line but we learned a lot and, in the end, managed to pull it off. This video covers the steps taken to install the unit from mounting the handler to preparing the lines. It is, however, not intended to be instructional. Much of the work seen here will require help from a professional.
Special thanks to Vinje & Son Sheet Metal for our duct layout design and custom sheet metal fabrication!

Okay as an electrical contractor and someone who has built 3 homes for my self I have watched a lot of construction related videos about concepts I was interested in. They all have typically one thing in common which is some Arrogant, "know it all" male (usually with a ridiculous hillbilly beard, machismo tattoos and some variation of a pro 2nd amendment t shirt or hoody) filling the video with their ridiculous Ego. Then I stumble on this video of a couple of low key gents taking their time, speaking softly, doing their research and putting out a great overall video that thoroughly shows what's involved in a DIY ductless minisplit install. Cheers to you guys, I love it.

The only thing I think I might do differently, and this is a big maybe, is to install a unit that had better thermostat options. I'm not a big fan of Fujitsu's thermostats but ultimately you are sort of locked into using them because it is a proprietary control protocol. We ended up purchasing the wifi module (for more than you'd spend on something like an Ecobee or Nest for a traditional system) so at least we can control it with Alexa and a mobile app. Fujitsu does sell an adapter so you can connect a traditional thermostat but you lose the variable speed feature which is important for comfort and efficiency.

Very nicely done video, I am looking for all the information I can regarding a split system I am planning on installing in a new construction environment and you guys have provided a lot. Doing a remodel system as you have done is much more challenging. I learned from you guys about the crow foot torque, and the tubing bender, not sure that will be necessary in a new install, we shall see. Why did you pick Fujitsu, was thinking Mitsubishi. A little more information on installing the refrigerant would be helpful...I will find it. A very well done presentation not overcrowded.
@40Figs
@40Figs 2 года назад
Mitsubishi has a great reputation, I had a wall-mount unit previously I was very happy with. If budget weren't a limitation that is probably the direction I would have gone. Ultimately Fujitsu seemed like a good bet because most of the local HVAC companies here sell and support them. We were also lucky in that our lineset length did not exceed the factory precharge so we just had to open the valves once everything was leak tested and vacuumed.
@gpweaver
@gpweaver 2 года назад
Talking with HVAC-knowledgeable friends of mine, I'd avoid Fujitsu. I paid way too much for an initial set of installs in our place (getting an oil furnace with a cracked combustion chamber out of the over-garage area) and one of the units shit the bed within 5 years of installation--apparently, the indoor evaporators are known for corroding and leaking. So now I'm debating whether to replace the evap coil and recharge the system, or just scrap the whole damned thing and run a new system.

@@40Figs Guys, question for you, for the attic unit (for me the ARU9RLF), the ducted unit, I notice when I run it, even on high, the air flow is quiet and low, it does cool the room but its no where near the air flow of the wall unit, is this what you find with your ducted unit, I guess this is normal ?
@paulcaruso96
@paulcaruso96 Год назад
BTW, I do want to share, for the ducted units, in my case, the ARU9RLF, when you install the drains, in the unit in this video, these guys used the default configuration, which allows you to pump up the water that needs to be drained, see 10:40 in the video clip, if you do not want to use the pump in this mode and instead in gravity feed mode, you need to actually clip the JM1 jumper wire on the circuit board, its not very clear in the manual but this is what is needed to disable the pump, the wire is like the size of a staple so you need to take extra care and make sure you are grounded properly.
@40Figs
@40Figs Год назад
Thank you for pointing that out. Yes, if you want to use the gravity drain (more ideal than using the pump IMO, but our attic configuration would have made it much less convenient to run the pipe that way) you'll have to clip JM1 as indicated in the installation manual.
@40Figs
@40Figs Год назад
We have not had airflow issues, I used a vane anemometer at each supply boot to confirm rough airflow numbers and it seems to pretty well line up with the design spec. I will say these systems are sensitive to static pressure and you may need to reference the installation manual to make configuration adjustments to increase the blower speed. See 10.3.1 Function Details- Static pressure. The default is for 0.1 in. wc. but you can increase it all the way to 0.36.

What type of drip pan was used and did you install a wet switch to turn off the unit in case if too much condensation?
@40Figs
@40Figs 2 года назад
The pan is a Diversitech Plastic Condensate Drain Pan, 27x39. I purchased a safety switch but haven't yet gotten around to building a solution to connect it. All the switches I've found are for traditional systems and are intended to disconnect the cooling call wire from the thermostat. The Fujitsu unit wants the reverse of this, it has terminals that should be closed when there is an overflow. My plan is to connect a transformer and relay separately to effectively invert the logic of the safety switch. My interim solution is a Zigbee water leak sensor in the drain pan connected to Home Assistant.

Hey guys, really enjoyed the video (especially love how supportive and kind you are to each other)! I'm in the process of remodeling my own LA home and want to replace the ancient gas furnace with a ducted mini-split system, albeit with three zones (three slim duct units). As a fellow do-it-yourselfer, would you recommend taking on a self-install (mostly to avoid paying the $30,000 cost for a professional installation)? Or is it *a lot* for someone who is detail-oriented but hasn't done it before?
@40Figs

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed! That's a tough question to answer. I will say, it was a huge undertaking for us. We did have some experience with mini-splits but this was our first ducted install. We learned a lot and saved a ton but it's sometimes difficult terrain to be in for DIYers because there's unfortunately not a lot of resources out there for DIY HVAC work. It's also a very involved process that will probably require learning new skills, but it can't hurt to try! (as long as you have a back-up plan in case things go sideways!)

Great job. I have installed ductless units but have yet to install ductwork. One very big concern: before anyone begins poking around an old attic, built before the mid 1980’s in particular; make sure the insulation is not asbestos. If the insulation is not simple fiberglass batts or you know exactly what it is, be careful and have it tested in several places especially if it looks like it is granular or unusual material. Perlite was a product commonly used years ago that had asbestos in it.

I've been seeing a lot of people posting online that if a professional does not install your system they will not honor the warranty if anything goes wrong which really sucks! I've seen this mostly about C&H so my plan for the system I'm about to install in my House in Lakewood, wa is to pay an HVAC contractor to come out and do the evacuating part so that way I know that very crucial part of the installation is done properly and then so I can also notate his HVAC Contractor License ID so when I register my warranty I can give them that information to make sure if there's any issues they absolutely honor their warranty!

I have no doubt there are sheet metal shops in LA that can make the plenums- return and supply- and I'm not sure you need all those elbows, or a 16" return- thats enough for about 3 tons- but I dont know what size you of concealed duct you are working with. I am here to compliment- not to criticize because you really did a great job. I do these a lot as an hvac contractor and given a completed attic they are a ton of work. I try to do them before the drywall is up----which makes it much simpler. Excellent work.

Thanks for watching! I agree, there are sheet metal shops in LA that could have built the plenums for us. It is challenging as a DIY-er to find shops that have time for us. Ultimately we chose Vinje's because they are DIY-friendly and also handled the duct design and calculations for us. All sizing was handled by them, and I think keeping static pressure to a minimum is why some of the duct sizes are so large. I used hard elbows where possible to avoid issues with making turns with flex duct - maybe unnecessary. Thanks for your feedback!

Hi! Thanks for watching! Based on where you are and the size/layout of your house, your needs are going to be quite different than ours but our unit was 1.5 tons/18000 BTU and it's been running nearly silently. Best of luck on your install! We're glad our video was of some help.

I've installed a couple of wall-mount mini splits previously so I had most of the necessary tools. There were some new tools needed for this job (duct crimper, duct strap tensioner, different size crowfoot wrench) that resulted in trips to the store or ordering online.

Is it typical to add an air filter box to a ducted mini-split like that? Were you worried about static pressure? My only hesitation in converting from traditional forced air to a multi-zone mini-split system is the lack of filtration. I also have a very small attic crawl space, which likely will make using concealed systems harder, so it may be moot anyway.
@40Figs
@40Figs Год назад
I'm not entirely sure if it's typical, but it is acceptable so long as you are attentive to the overall external static pressure of the system design. We used the Aprilaire 2410 with the 413 media filter, which adds 0.06 in. wc. @ 600 CFM, well within the design limits of the air handler. I also performed some static pressure checks with a manometer to confirm the design assumptions. For your application I would suggest looking into something like the Aprilaire 1625FG11 which is a ceiling-mount filter grille, so you don't need to have a big box in the attic.

Great work! Did you forego all warranty from Fujitsu by doing this yourself? Also, why use a ducted system - You have access in the attic, so why not use ceiling cassettes, for example?
@40Figs
@40Figs 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! We haven't needed to test the warranty yet. One of the reasons we chose Fujitsu is that many of the local contractors support these units, so if we ever ran into an issue hopefully we can get help. The main reasons we chose ducted vs. ceiling cassettes are aesthetics, cost, and installation complexity. Ceiling cassettes would have required us to frame openings in the ceiling joists, run line sets to each, required a multi-zone unit, and would have been much more expensive.

@@40Figs Just a suggestion based on the quality of this video you produced, Do a video! I just did blow-in insulation and it is not difficult, just time-consuming. Not exactly expensive either. There were not a lot of videos out there either in April when I did this, just generic ones mostly from the vendors. You may also want to show tips and point out the different types of blow-in insulation ( fiberglass, Rockwool, cellulose) and include the rental process from Home Depot or the likes. Also compute the R-value you intend to shoot for and the amount of bales you will need. If you are looking for content.......

Why did you use a 16" return duct? What CFM is your system supposed to output? I am installing a 18k BTU concealed duct unit and since my system medium speed is 450 CFM, I decided to go with a 12" return which is supposed to apply 480 CFM. 16" is supposed to supply 1000 CFM
@40Figs
@40Figs Год назад
The return size was specified by the company we hired to design the duct plan and build the plenums. My understanding is that our unit is a low static pressure model so it needs a larger return to keep within the limits. It is a ~600 CFM system. You probably need to design your ductwork for the high speed mode. Thanks for watching!
@IADHDD
@IADHDD Год назад
@@40Figs thanks for the reply. My unit on max speed is 530 CFM (med speed is 450 CFM). 12" flexible supplies 480 CFM, but my vents are supposed to supply 445 CFM. I am also planning on connecting the 5" fresh intake which should pull another 50 CFM on top of the 480 CFM 12" return. I know for your system you could've went with a 14" return which should give you 700 CFM, but they went one size up to 16"

It appears they used a 16 inch supply....which equals 1000 cfm intake.....and on the outflow they used either 5x6 inch flex which flows 75cfm per tube or 5x8 inch flex tubes flowing 160cfm per tube. engineering appears to be designed for a 24000 btu system which outflows at 775cfm.
@40Figs
@40Figs 2 года назад
The system was engineered for 600cfm at 0.1-0.2" WC. You are correct the return is 16 inch. The supply/outflow ducts are 2x 7 inches and 2x 6 inches. The unit is 18000 BTU.

In California it is a requirement to have a secondary drain pan in case the primary drain gets clogged. It is cheap insurance to avoid water damage. Glad you were able to build the plenums yourself, that certainly can save some money.

The tools don't cost anywhere near what install labor costs, especially in an expensive area. This would easily be a 5-figure quote from an HVAC company, and the parts/unit are less than half of that total cost. When HVAC labor costs what lawyers do (300+/hr), it's insane not to consider DIY.
