I’m old enough to recall the 50’s introduction of slinky and hula hoops. Trust me neither, no matter the configuration will be problematic for a squirrel.
It stopped all of the squirrels except for one. So I had to put the Chinaman cap back on the pole. Then a bear moved into the area and destroyed the feeder and the pole. Now I have them suspended between the house and the trees
You, sir, deserve all the birds and squirrels your feeders attract. I hope a bobcat or lynx discover his buffet. The corn feeder is testament and ticket for your place in heaven.
I've been using the slinky trick for about 8 years now. The birds toss out so much sunflower seed & cracked corn that the squirrels are content with the leftovers on the ground.
Watched a video in which the squirrel let the slinky bounce then time a jump more than half-way up the pole while the slinky was at the top of its bounce. It then had a fraction of a second to make a second jump all the way to the feeder. At that point the squirrel had earned a meal.
It doesn't work, I had one on mine. Works for a good few months but then it stops scaring the squirrels, they get used to it and then it actually helps them to get up the pole. I even had a slinky and a large baffle and they still sussed it out lol. They are so clever (little shits)
Lol 😆. I've just ordered my bird feeder station so I've got it all to come. They are really clever aren't they? I used to leave nuts and seeds on one of my window ledges upstairs for our gorgeous blue & great tits and I had a little visit all the way up there. Couldn't believe it since he literally must've crawled up the wall like spider man as there is no other way up there barring flying. Does the grease on the pole thing not work at all?
Thanks! I Moved to a new home 3 years ago, we had bridfeeders on one side of the yard, not many birds and no squrriels. So moved the feeders to other side of backyard and poof birds now come in droves, and squrriels. Going to try this this wkk, thanks again.
I've got the answer and it isn't a slinky! They figured that out within a day. Get a 1 quart size plastic soda bottle from the dollar store. Cut the top and bottom out of it. It's flexible enough to push it over the crook in my shepherd's pole feeder. Punch a hole around the top and wire it high enough so that the squirrel can't jump over it. I spray painted it black to blend in a little better . I used a handheld hole puncher to make that hole. Finally, something that really does work!
A black bear discovered my bird feeders and ended the pole setup. I now have them suspended on cables between trees. Every once in awhile a squirrel is able to get to the feeders but it does not happen often.
Lol , I've watched various videos of squirrels an slinkiies I do laugh but I have more squirrels than birds so I just feed them in the winter months I buy hole unshelled dry roasted peanuts because I like watching them sit at open the shell an eat the peanuts !
I no longer have Squirrels in my yard. I have a security detail on duty during daylight hours. It’s amazing to see all my Squirrels in the neighbors yard, just looking for a chance to break the perimeter and hit the feeders. One might ask at this time what type of security do I have?? We call her Grace, she’s a 75 lb Doberman who eats a Raw Diet. Training her was easy. Often Squirrels get hit crossing my street so I’d retrieve them quickly and feed the Doberman. Today she’s fully trained in the understanding Squirrel taste just like rabbits her main source of protein. Yes, I speak with confidence, today we have no Squirrel problem. 🤠
Some years ago I saw this’SQUIRREL PROOF’feeder it was about 20” plastic filler, but outside was metal,,in a bronze colour, so it’s SPRING LOADED, if a squirrel goes for it , it just closes its feed areas, so it lasted a month, I filled it, went inside, had breakfast, looked out,,,,,,,,,,, OH HOW COULD BIRDS EAT SO MANY SEEDS? They did not , but one bastard, had the feeder shut, so it hung there & CHEWED INTO THE VISIBLE PLASTIC BIN causing the seeds to pour out, never filled it ever again I have no trees in my backyard, some jump from a neighbors tree , slinky I will get next time .🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
hooked a battery up to the pole yet? spiral copper wire onto a wooden pole and tie the leads back to a battery. or use parts from a kit they sell for fences.
Using stainless steel banding strap material (similar to hose clamp material), I cut 3 straps about 2 inches long. I bent one end of each around the end of the Slinky and then secured the other end of the 2 inch long straps to the pole with a hose clamp.
You can slide the slinky over the pole and attach the top of it with electrical tape. I got Fancy with mine. I cut 3 lengths of stainless steel strapping material (similar to what hose clamps are made out of). Each piece was about 3 inches long. Then I placed them around the pole and used a hose clamp to hold the tops of the straps to the pole. Then I made bent the bottoms of the straps around the top of the slinky. This made the slinky hang evenly
